I trekked down to India's mysterious meteorite crater. See what's down there and why NASA visited it! It's attracted scientists from around the world due to its strange characteristics and anomalies, which I'll show you as I trek down to the base. This is Lonar Lake in the state of Maharashtra.

Lonar Lake is a natural saltwater lake in Maharashtra, India, formed 52,000 years ago due to a meteorite impact. It is located within the Lonar crater and is known for its unique ecological features.
The lake is saline, alkaline, and supports diverse microorganisms.
It attracts scientists, researchers, and tourists interested in astrobiology and the origin of life.
Lonar Lake is also culturally significant, mentioned in ancient texts and surrounded by temples and archaeological sites. It is protected as the Lonar Wildlife Sanctuary.

Wow, Lonar is my hometown, I'm really glad that someone like Karl got to see the crater, there are so many legends around this one.. and I must say one of the most underrated places in India, If you ever go to the place take a walk around the whole crater its really an amazing experience, you'll encounter some monkeys, peacocks and various kinds of insects and birds, the smell is bit horrid but some locals take a dive in it as its holy place, there are many ancient temples around and as I said many legends associated to them. Fun Fact: In 2020 around peak of the Summer the water of the crater turned pink due to the low levels, it was lockdown but we still managed to go there and witnessed pink amazing crater..!

I'm from India but live in California. Had heard of this place but didn't know anything more than the fact that it was a lake created by the impact of a meteorite. Watched this video with my thirteen year old son who is an avid traveler and loves geography and science. Ancient Indian Kings used to have superhuman beings like oversized intelligent animals, called as 'Yaksha, Gandharvas, Naagas' ... they used to serve the kings and build huge temples with precision, they never used to come out in open... in India they still have the remains of their bastions in many places as they were employed by different dynasties

Beautiful video and wonderfully guided by Mr. Amol ji. Just a small addition on magnetosomes, they are not microorganisms, MAgnetosomes are actually membranous organelles found in magnetotactic bacteria found in these regions. These organelles help in sequestering iron in it, biomineralize this iron to magnetic crystals or nanoparticles. Its really very interesting to study. The pink colour change that had occurred in Lonar lake was due to a group of microorganisms called 'Haloarchaea' , which produced pink pigment and which are salt loving, as its shown here that the pH is highly alkaline. I had missed a chance to visit Lonar lake when I was around, would have loved to learn more about the microbiology of the place but couldn't come here as I had to leave for some other work, but hope to visit this place once.
