i picked up a silver reflective in the 72" (2m) size and then added a diffusion sheet but havent had any reason to use it. cant seem to get any models or even non-models who might want some photos... love your videos! keep them coming....

I love these shorter comparison videos. Especially for someone with less experience about flash and lighting modifiers it’s very helpful seeing videos that are more concentrated on one or two modifiers. It’s great to have an overall overview about all possible modifiers, but sometimes this can get quite overwhelming 😉

I have really grown to like the deep umbrella because of similarity to the output of a softbox but with a much easier transport and setup. These could be a game changer for a photographer who doe a lot of location work not only by reducing to equipment costs but also reducing set up time. Mixing a beaded silver umbrella with a white reflective one could produce some nice results.

I bought a 130 cm Godox deep umbrella to use more as a fill light, but the results are very good for full body portraits. They have a different learning curve than a softbox. lots of output!

For those who are in doubt. I have a Godox 165cm deep white umbrella in a 3 mx 4m room and 2,40cm ceiling height and use it overhead. It fits just fine, you just have to put the model lower(i am my on model because i am an amateur),. The light is very focussed so the light spill is as minimal as it can get. With a diffuser on it will spill more light of course, but i don't even own the diffuser. It is already soft because it is big,, All you have to do is figure out hat contrast you want and add some reflectors accordingly.

I appreciated seeing this comparison. I have two of these umbrellas (different brand but still cheap) and have gotten a lot of use out of them, especially for photographing groups. But another disadvantage not mentioned here: They do break, don't they? The long rods and the large amount of fabric put a lot of load on the little hinges that hold the spreaders onto the bows, and as a result both of mine have several gaff-tape and paper-clip repairs. Maybe other brands have better hardware, but I'd still advise extra care when handling these…

I can see that the umbrella rod is already pretty bent, not what you'd expect from a professional umbrella :D

Excellent review and comparison to the Octabox 150! Your descriptions are so useful. The cost difference is even more dramatic if you include the cost of the speed ring with the Octabox. Lighting characteristics get closer when using the front diffuser on the umbrella. The umbrella is more fragile and easy to upset and damage outdoors. The Octabox 150 as you mentioned is lit from the rear, is more robust, and offers more uniform and precise lighting when needed. Well done - thanks Karl!

when using it barebulb, have to be careful that bulb isn't in directly line of sight to your subject, otherwise you will have mix of hard and soft light. The front difussion material some umbrella comes with can help with this

great video. happy to hear that with white version you don't use diffuser. tedious to add. also you are using bare bulb. I tried RFT-17 reflector and not as good as bare bulb. Just purchased two godox UB-105W for white background with ad300pro and one godox UB-130W for key light. 130cm is already big ! I don't like the way the rod of umbrella is held on bracket. no screw generally and, it easily collpases to the bulb especially when i try to have horizontal umbrella over the head. I found a godox 105 degrees RFT-17 reflector for umbrella with screw to help. I am now very intersted by a 165 diffuser umbrella ha used by Vanessa Joy to simulate a window for corporate photos photos on-site. There are also some interesting setups on godox youtube using two UB-105D translucent compact umbrellas in street, one on top and one from floor.

would using a diffusion material on the umbrella make the contrast better ?
@VisualEducationStudio2 ай бұрын
Hi the purpose of diffusion is to spread the light which in most cases reduces contrast as the light then has the opportunity to bounce back off of other surfaces in your surroundings. If you really want to get to grips with how light works then you should take a look at these classes: visualeducation.com/section/lighting-theory-and-equipment/

great video Karl, but I noticed you used a "unilite" head, is this the power you must have to use this size umbrella; aka a 1600 or 3200 W\S pack (a/c or Battery) or can you use a pulso-G, or other lights?
@VisualEducationStudio Жыл бұрын
Hi, I'm pretty sure you could use even a 400J head with this, no problem.
