Yes. You could really tell in the first 4 games played in this match who the better player was on clay. Muchova was defending out wide and transitioning beautifully to attack. On a hard court, Osaka wins hitting powerful shots like that behind her big serve, but not on a slower surface like clay.

That's the beauty about clay surface. It's not only about big serve and a great forehand right after. You gotta think the game, must take the bounce accountable. It becomes more a chess game on court than in other surfaces. That's why Muchova is so effective. She really thinks her strategy through.

Agree . I would add also physical aspect + fitness level .You have to work very hard on clay court to win every point . This is something Osaka is missing ,she needs to improve fitness level +foot work . Now she plays like Serina ( powerful tennis to over hit the opponent )
@EduDiniz23

@@dimula121 absolutely. The tennis player must be in harmony with these two aspects: tactics and physical training. Taking Svitolina as an example, she's really fit, loves to run everywhere on court, but definitely doesn't choose wisely her shots and, looking through a technical perspective, she really doesn't have some striking shots. Something that, Halep learnt over time.

osaka needs to take a look at maria sharapova and serena, even pliskova on what they did to advance their clay court match. she needs to add slice and drop shots, being her opponent to the net and not just make her move but move her using angles to close out points, just hitting against a player who can hit their spots while knowing how to move on clay is silly. needs to add more topspin and ease into the point, she might get through to the later rounds on clay hitting through players but as soon as you face someone like barty, halep, or even someone like bertens, sorribes tormo, zidansek, they will just tire her. needs to rethink asap

I think she made it to either the fourth round or quarters at the USO; RG third or fourth round. So her defeating her compatriot Karolina Pliskova, Barty at AO and now Osaka at Madrid I am not surprised. I knew Muchova would be a problem for Osaka at this tournament. I think Naomi's struggles are a referendum against her coaches. At this point in her career, she should be very comfortable on clay and grass courts. Tactically, she has to develop a better finesse game because her power is neutralized on these courts. I suggest that she follows the same playbook as Coco Gauff. She's playing very well because she took the challenge to tackle the clay court by playing multiple clay tournaments. In addition, I think she knows that she will underperform at Roland so that's why she has preemptively told the media that she doesn't want to talk to them. Eventually, she has to answer those tough questions as to why she's hasn't progressed further as a clay and grass court player. Ultimately, it's up to her to make those changes to become an all-around player. Her coaches probably have told her repeatedly about it but she has to want it. I predict 2nd round exit maybe first but definitively put stock into Coco Gauff.

I observed these in Osaka's game: 1. You wait for the opponent to make mistakes 2. You are waiting for it too long before your opponents smells that tactics and sending you strong message, but you kept forgetting it. 3. Shot making: You can't play the same way you play in hard courts. You must be very well knowing it. Wrong selection of shots. 4. Clay and grass courts shows who is the real player 5. Playing too many shots makes physically and mentally weak, you don't need to be too good on passing the ball to your opponents when there is lot of space in the court It is easy to preach than practice!

As great of a player as Osaka is, she’s actually just a great hard court player, as opposed to being a great tennis player . You can’t be considered a great tennis player overall if you can only play well on one type of court. She’s just fortunate that the one type of court she’s good on has two grand slams. The fact that US Open and AO are back to back makes her wins looks more impressive. The fact that the tennis commentators and media clearly love her and thinks she’s so precious makes them make excuses for her when she starts losing in the clay and grass seasons. They blame it on her not being able to handle the “stress” of being world #1 or she’s exhausted from sponsor obligations, etc. Truthfully, she just hasn’t become a great player yet. There’s nothing wrong with having one better surface, most players do, but some of Osaka’s hype is premature. Her journey highlights how great Serena has been and why people need to stop comparing Osaka to Serena.

She will still be in top 5 tho. Her points were earned from hard court tournaments and she is now number 2 based on those points. Since she did not win so many points on clay tournaments, she does not have to defend too much - this means there is no risk for her to drop too many positions. And other players from top will still not earn enough points during clay season, in order to advance that much in the ranking, because clay season is shorther. The only person that can steal her number 2 seat is Simona Halep, especially because she is playing on her favourite surface.
