The fact James does this for hours on end at live shows ( sometimes even faster than the original track lol ) while standing up and singing, just shows why he's one of the gods of metal. He ain't human man lol

Efficient picking is the key. No strain, nice and loose, letting the speed come naturally and confidently. When Meshuggah play Bleed, they barely move a muscle at all, with the exception of the vocalist :p

Alternate fast picking I managed to get pretty good at. Having played in a thrash band for a number of years really helped with that. But yeah, James' downpicking is seriously wrist-wrecking. Even Creeping Death, which sounds and seems like a simple riff to play but getting it up to speed is a lot harder than you think. Then there is Master of Puppets and Blackened, which are much harder riffs but also downpicked. He is a machine.

When I started playing guitar, I usually played 6-8 hours a day. When I had played maybe a year or so, I often played all 5 Metallica albums in a row (not everything but about 80%). It is so sad we didn't have any video cameras or recording equipment back then. It would be so awesome to see, how well I really played...probably not as good as I felt, but my picking hand has never been as good as it was. After some year and a half or so, I got my drivers licence (and girlfriend(s)) and I didn't play that much. Even had some months breaks. Now I haven't played at all in over a decade...and by "at all" I mean, that I have probably played under two hours in total. I have severe issues with my arms and shoulders, so it's not fun anymore 🙁

Maybe someone here can help me understand downpicking: It seems to me that in these riffs not *everything* is donwpicked (for example, in Disposable Heroes and Damage Inc), am I right? So, how do you choose when donwpicking and when not?
@KarriHanninen2 жыл бұрын
Generally you would downpick 8th notes and then do upstrokes for all of the notes in between🙂 For disposable heroes the picking pattern is: |D-DUD|D-D-|D-D-|DUDU| Where D = downstroke, U = upstroke 👍
