Thanks for the video. Mine’s from the late 90’s. Still going strong. At that time no sternum strap, no hydration pouch sleeve or clip on the shoulder strap, no side pockets, webbing on the lid not bungee. And the whole thing is 1000denier. Bombproof. 👍🏻

Very well presented review for a great product. Im Australian ex military and the European carry gear is so far ahead of the rest of us, even the yanks kit, and funnily enough its also the oldest designs. The reason being Euro armies still train and equip the old way aka as if to face comparable enemies. They need light, mobile, no nonsense tough gear to keep you alive in the field and it spills over into their hiking market as well. The yanks equip themselves to fight policing operations against poor third world opponents where their soldiers get driven to the battle. They love heavy gear, excess molle, zippers and added pouches and pockets on everything, Some other advantages of these pack types. Single compartment means lighter weight, they dont use more material for pockets. No Molle. Molle is a two edged sword, adds dubious functionality on small packs and also adds weight and points of egress in the stitching for moisture. If you are wading creeks, canoeing or in driving rain, top loaders are much easier to waterproof since you only need one large internal dry bag for everything( you take the gear out of the lid compartment). Try this with a 511 pack with 4-6 compartments including those internal pouch organiser panels lol, its a much bigger PIA. Top loaders are more pickpocket proof. If you are cruising other countries or have you gear on the train its easier for a pickpocket to open zippers on external pouch designs than a top loader, particularly when you are wearing it. Top loaders can also pack a fair bit more than their litre rating as you can keep stacking internal contents high, as long as you have enough strap length to still clip the hatch down you are good.
