my lore speculation: i think that the thing is the abyss and the only time whe see a appereance is when he changes the map (a purple glow), and the abyss bridge is a method of feeding it, because clearly it wont work, and the van that gets stuck, disappears because of karmy throwing it in to the pit (abyss's mouth), where they are only digested when no one's looking, and a clue of that is that karmy says "no one escapes" while killing two people who survived, keeping this secret, still a secret. EDIT: i think the mods are a gift from the abyss for feeding him, and a strange quote in the beginning "oh i broke another one" problably meaning that humans are merely tools and food for the abyss, seeing how he doesnt care about the "main cast", because they are still tools, and also how he replaces a human so easily, without even caring.
