Karun Chandhok - a few tenths

Karun Chandhok is one of only two Indians who made it to Formula 1 and currently races in Formula E with Mahindra Racing.
In 2010 he competed for Hispania Racing in Formula 1, before this he raced in GP2 for 2 seasons, winning races. Prior to his time in GP2, Karun won the Formula Asia championship in 2001 and was the inaugural Formula Asia V6 by Renault champion in 2006 with a record number of wins.
In this portrait Karun talks about his life in racing, moving from Asia to the UK, racing in the most competitive Formula 3 environment, his struggles to find budget and how Bernie helped along the way.
Karun also looks at the current Formula E series and talks about the outlook for electric open wheel racing.

Huge respect to Karun and Narain who have battled not only on the track but also off it. Coming from a place like India where motorsport is not very popular and making it to Formula 1 is a massive achievement in itself.

We need a strong indian f1 driver with a personality. Doesn't even have to be champion level, an indian kobayashi would be enough. It was sad seeing the Indian GP leave india because of low support in India. I think motorsport could be huge in India, just need a push in the media.

Thank you for your comments, really good to read you like the interviews. Without anybody watching I wouldn't be able to make the next. With regards to cutting it so the questions are not there, it is pretty challenging but I always somehow manage to make it sound like a continues story. With Karun I asked about 20 questions if I recall and removed about 30 minutes of him talking to make it seamless and remove some of the stuff I did not think was core to his story. A lot of this happens already in the preparations to come up with the questions which takes me about week of reading and finding as much out as I can.

Excellent video - Karun is a very interesting person to listen to and his career has fascinated me for many years. Letting him race in India for Lotus (Caterham) seemed like a no-brainer to me at the time but it's just a sign of the bad politics and commercial dealings which occur in F1 which prevent such things as that from happening. Personally, I think having wildcard drivers in F1 for occasions such as that would be a very sensible, as well as highly marketable idea, and I don't understand why that doesn't happen.

He has had an outstanding career, and as a driver, his determination and commitment was unprecedented in world rallying and set a benchmark for sure. Good guy ..not the greatest driver... very passionate though went through the motions of F1. There was an Indian driver who lived in the US would have dominated anyone if he had half the support this kid had..James Zach did not have support from anyone. I called him Indian Senna because of his aggressive driving style but he was a drift driver, he was killing other competitors with a cheap Nissan which he modified himself he was a very hands on driver. i have never seen such an amazing driver from Indian descent. Karun be happy you have a great family who supports you. Good luck to your racing future.

Karun didn't have the talent to win the WDC - but he did a good job in difficult circumstances. He always felt happy and fortunate to be doing what he was doing - and that's a welcome change from the entitled mentality of many F1 drivers. We could use more drivers like Karun to be honest...
