Offering some practical considerations for optimally setting up a multiple lens collection with the Kase Revolution magnetic filter system. I hope you find this information a good addition to what's already out there.
As promised in the video, here is a link to a short Kase intro video:

The magnetism eventually weakens and its bit risky to keep the filter on incase it falls off. I paid over 600 pounds for 112mm nikon filter set.

Thanks, I was under the assumption that with a 77mm lens thread you want to use the 95 mm kit with 77mm to 95mm step-up ring. this way you don't get lens vignetting if you need to stack CPL with ND filters.
@BillSmithBSartist

Yeah but if the idea is to leave them on all the time then this becomes too cumbersome to manage and I can’t use my normal lens hoods. They don’t make magnetic step ups or that might work. Instead what I plan to do is go with magnetic UV filters so I can easily take them off when I want to stack NDs. This should eliminate the vignetting issue in all but the most extreme cases. The only issue with that is that I have to be careful not to pull off the UV every time I remove the magnetic lens cap. Then again, maybe I go back to stick lens caps. But I do like the magnetic ones.

There are magnetic step up rings now available. They are more expensive than the regular, threaded step up rings and not easy to find on their shop site.

Great video, thank you for sharing your experience! I have one question that is bothering me: how do you deal with filters that you should rotate (variable nd filters, CPL filters)? do magnetic adapters have some notches inside or filter is rotating freely?
@BillSmithBSartist
@BillSmithBSartist Жыл бұрын
Thanks. No notches. Just magnetic. Filter rotates freely without an issue. I use my Revolution CPL that way. I didn’t know they make a variable ND.

@@BillSmithBSartist thanks, I'm asking because they make magnetic adapters also, for third party filters. So basically they sell 2 rings, one for filter and one for lens, even step up magnetic rings.

Thanks. Very clarifying . But on my current Kase Magnetic Wolverine filter I use step up rings to my filter size 82 mm. Can the same be done with these filters and with the inlay rings and original lense hoods?
@BillSmithBSartist
@BillSmithBSartist Жыл бұрын
I wouldn’t know for sure but another commenter right here plans on using 82mm step up. May want to ask him. I’m not sure what differences, if any, between the Revolution and Wolverine. I thought I saw the terms used together. I may be wrong. Just from handling what I have so far I can make the following *guesses*: I suspect the standard adapter ring will work with a step up ring. I guess you’d put a step up ring on your lens and then add an 82mm Kase standard magnetic adapter and buy Kase 82mm filters. Which is I guess what you are doing now. I’m not sure I can envision a use for the inlay ring in this scenario. With respect to using your original lens hood, how is that working now with your existing step up ring? I’d imagine with the step up ring on you can’t get the hood over it to mount to the lens.

Just keep in mind, if you slap it in on top of one of their magnetic filters (say you want to leave the polarizer on) it’s likely to take the filter off with it when you remove it.

I just learned something new after I received my order of another lens cap and a lens cap/inlaid ring kit. For some reason that so far escapes me, they don’t have a single lens cap design. The standalone lens cap you can buy differs from the one that comes with the inlaid ring. The standalone lens cap works with the standard (non inlaid) ring and the adapter ring for the lens hood. But does not work well with the inlaid ring. Doesn’t fit in all the way. It sort of works. But not real solid. I’ve sent them feedback. They should make them all interchangeable.

I just received an answer from Desmond Photographic where I bought from. Apparently while Wolverine and Revolution are sometimes used interchangeably, they aren’t always compatible. I could find this on Amazon at the time of purchase, but they sent me this which is the proper Revolution cap. You didn’t mention stacking filters on the inlay ring with a iv protection filter on . Is there vignetting on the wider angles ?
@BillSmithBSartist
@BillSmithBSartist Жыл бұрын
Excellent question. Yes! There is. One of other commenters said they will opt for larger filters with a step up ring. This is a very smart idea. I think I’ll get by given my limited use. But the step up ring option is something you should seriously consider.

Right now I am using screw on filters and I am considering getting the Kase revolution system, when I screw 2 filters on to my16-35 I get vignettes at the 16 point on the lens. It is fine with 1 filter but stacked filters no so I am considering the 82 filter set. Have you tried staking filters on your wide angle lens

Yes. I am getting vignetting at 24 mm in the following configuration: Lens -> Canon screw in UV filter -> Kase standard (not inlaid) adapter -> ND1000 I’ve not yet tried the inlaid adapter
@BillSmithBSartist

I guess a mitigating solution would be to spend more money and buy their magnetic UV filter to leave on but then take off when I want to use a polarizer and ND. The vignetting I got by stacking onto my screw in UV was non trivial. Imagine if I stacked a polarizer and an ND on that. Although another way of looking at it is that it shaves several mils off the short end of my lens if I have to zoom out a little and then crop. After all, this is not the type of vignette you can fix with a lens profile or the Lightroom vignette tool. It has to be cropped out.

LOL. I’m a recovering purist. You should try it. The actual fact is that my images will quickly become irrevocably compromised after a few dings to my front element. And if you aren’t exposing your front element to a few dings then you need to find another hobby. ;). With all due respect. Which means as much as you’ve shown me. ;). How banged up is your keyboard by the way?
