Ever since I lost my filter holder over a cliff back in March I’ve been unhappy with my old Filter system . So I decided to give the KASE wolverine system a go and see if it suited my style of outdoor photography ..
This is my review and thoughts on the magnetic Wolverine filter set from Kase

Good review DJ. My issue with magnetic systems is that you can no longer use the lens hood which is something I need a high percentage of the time. Kase told me that you can still use the lens hood but I can clearly see that isn't the case.
@christian.irmler
@christian.irmler 3 жыл бұрын
That's a good point, Gavin! Lens hood is also really important for me, when it comes down to wild river or waterfall photography. You never get rid 100% of water drops, but it's anyway a big difference. And guess - that's where I use my filters most, excepted by the circular polarizer, that comes also in use in woodland and vistas sometimes :)
@DarrenJSpoonley
@DarrenJSpoonley 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks G... Yes thats a very valid point for sure... I've not used a hood on any of my wide lenses in years, long lenses yes, but now that I can use this one set of filters across all my lenses I'll no doubt soon see the reality of your point ...I suppose its a tight bit of real estate there on the edge to be able to take both somehow ... Thanks for watching buddy

Well, interestingly enough the flimsy lens hood of Nikon 14-30mm Z lens can still be attached on top of one Kase magnetic filter. It doesn't lock in fully (just a few millimetres off), but holds in place well enough, i. e. won't fall off. Even two magnetic filters stacked can be used, but only from 16mm up in order to avoid some nasty vignette in the corners. Guess it all goes down to a specific lens (and its hood for that matter) being used with Kase magnetic filters🤔
@christian.irmler

@@ekimvenes9298 Finally each filter system seems to have their advantages and disadvantages. The system filter wins with flexibility, the screw filter in the small usage of space and the option to use a lens hood and the magnetic filter is a little bit of both, more or less, depending on the lens. Maybe the solution were the magnetic system with an umbrella instead of the hood, fixed with any holder at a second tripod, to keep it sturdy, haha :-)

Great review , I moved from Lee to Kase , I have both the magnetic and the square system , the magnetic I use on my travels and when out hiking but if I'm local the I use the square system, each has their own advantages but both are great and as you say no colour cast . To show the affect of the polarizer hold the Kase filter with the writing facing you and look towards a TV or monitor and then rotate it.

Kase magnetic filters are really handy in the field. Fairly practical to use, indeed. Absolutely agree on excellent quality of the polarising filter. Since I've owned this kit for a while now, I can confirm the picture quality is truly great while using polariser and 6stop filter. However the 10stop one gives me a slightly warm colour cast, but can be fixed in postprocess. It's also important to mention that there's a visible vignetting in extreme corners introduced on 14mm end when used with Nikon 14-30mm Z mount lens (82mm filter thread) with only 1 filter on (say the 6stop alone). Stacking filters up makes this even worse. However from 16mm up no vignette is visible even with more filters stacked on top of each other. Thanks for the review, sir🤝

@@ekimvenes9298 hi it’s a Fuji 10-24 with a 72-77mm magnetic ring adapter for my 77mm filters. Initially I had a metal adapter and just screwed in a 77mm magnetic ring but got vignet then, going with a native magnetic adapter ring seems to have sorted it. Deffo nothing with one on it and I’m pretty sure it’s ok with 2.

@@TerryMacSweeney You're lucky dog then😉. My Nikon 14-30mm Z lens is 82mm, but on the widest 14mm end there's a slight vignette in extreme corners with 1 magnetic filter on, so a very slight crop is required (then it becomes something like 14.5-15mm on full frame). With two filters stacked, even 15mm is still no vignette free, only 16mm and up becomes fully usable. As I wrote before, it all comes down to actual lens design, your system is a crop sensor and below 82mm filter thread. Despite this drawback I'm still fairly happy with Kase, the practicality is simply great, no more screw in and out headaches🙂

Sounds great other than the Grad NDs. I use my rectangular Grads a lot and think I would miss them big time. Still you reckon this system will replace your LEEs or would you bring them both in the field...?
@DarrenJSpoonley
@DarrenJSpoonley 3 жыл бұрын
I felt just the same as you , I’ve only used only rectangular grads in the past also but don’t think I will bring them out again as it would mean having to bring a holder .. I’ll bracket instead I think if the circular doesn’t work for the scene .. the magnetic idea is very clear to be fair , I’ve had a comment that it can fall off while carrying around but I never do that really .. but even stacking them on the lens they feel secure . I got the 95mm version so that will cover all my lens types , each lens has its own ring and I’ll have zero vignettes on even my widest lens as a result :-)

Hi Darren, a great video about filters! Funny, that's also a topic I've already long on my list for videos, but I've never done because I always found anything else, although it's a really important topic :) I stumbled already over the KASE magnetic system and it looks totally good for me. Currently I will not change, because I use already a filter system I'm happy with from Rollei - gorilla glass, no colour casts, no appreciable loss of sharpness, reasonable priced and I anyway try to use filters as rare as possible. But if I would not have any, I think I would properly even go with the KASE you have, because of the easy way to use. Doesn't take all too much space in your bag and you don't have to skrew, what were the biggest advantage for me. I generelly stopped using grad filters, because that's not really ideal here in the mountains :) But I see it like you: If you want to use grad filters, it should be possible to decide by your own where to put the horizon, so for that use case system filters were definitely better. Thank you for sharing your experience, Darren! Have a fantastic Sunday, Christian

Hi Darren...Appreciate the video...I see your focus is landscape. But my interest is portraits. So my question is...can I use the ND filters to avoid washed out skies and then use flash to expose my (human) subject? Or should I just achieve this via HSS? i.e. should I invest in the Kase filters and do they offer an end result (for portraits) that's better than HSS?

Hi Darren, I've only ever used Kase filters as I was told they were by far the best on the market when I went about getting a set. I was looking at one of the better know brands but was told don't for loads of different reasons, no colour cast, water repellent and the fact that they are the "Tonka Toy" of filters practically indestructible. I've seen brian drop them just to show how tough they are...
@DarrenJSpoonley
@DarrenJSpoonley 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks David, so far for me I can see how strong they look from a build point of view, not had the misfortune of dropping yet, but no doubt it will arrive and I also think I will be confident in them not smashing or even snapping like my other filters... Thanks for watching
@fergal1970
@fergal1970 2 жыл бұрын
They are actually quite easy to break and are really not that more robust than any other filter system. There is certainly no comeback with Kase if you break them. In the filter holder version it's easy not to have the holder on correctly. It needs to be checked carefully before letting go. I've droppped Lee filters and they survived, it can depend on the surface. Twice I've broken Kase filters and surprised both times they didn't survive the fall. It's glass and if the shock is sharp enough even toughened glass cracks. Nothing wrong with them as filters just don't buy them if you are expecting them to be unbreakable. The magnetic filter is a good idea and works reasonable well but not to walk around with. They can be bumped off especially if they are stacked, it could be the adapter is more magnetic that the filter rings.

@Joe Gowac Kase do have filter holder kits for wide- and super-wide angles. It would depend on what brand and focal length you're talking about. The most popular such as Nikon and Sigma 14-24mm f/2.8 get guernseys and I've noticed online that they have focused on Sony lenses recently with the popularity of that brand of camera I guess, but not listed in my literature. Look for types K150P and K170 as starting points. I've just bought a set and they may just be as good as the hype, although I quickly got the impression that nothing could be that good. The K9 K100 style gets down to 24mm wide and 67mm lens thread size easily, and if you buy in at the 82mm K9 holder level sporting a 90mm magnetic CPL, it appears vignetting won't be a problem. Not sure what happens at super-wide angles but, again, the hype exceeds any known experience it seems.

I'm not convinced of the need for ND grads when some elementary PS blending can achieve a better - or at least a comparable - result without the need for forking out for these very expensive filter systems. Yes, you have to have filters if you want to do long exposures and a 10-stop filter is necessary but my preference is for screw-ins: no faffing about with (ridiculously over-priced) filter holders and for my money you can't beat B&W - premium German glass and built to last. A 6-stop and a 10-stop will cover all your long-exposure needs. You don't need ND grads and certainly not those circular ones which don't give you any control over which part of the frame to shade.

Absolutely John, the only real filter needed is the Polarizer , all others can be done in post, I don't see myself using Grad ND for exactly the same reasons and this system is the most straight forward in regards to attaching them , no filter holder needed as such, I got the largest set that will cover all my lens types , each lens has mount so simple snap on and go :-) Thanks for watching

BTW the easy way to demonstrate a cpl working is to film it viewing a pc monitor, turning the polariser will let you see the monitor and then it will get darker until you cannot see the screen. :)

Yet another review that fails to mention how easily the filters can get knocked off your camera shame on you Darren

A bit unfair there Barry to be honest, why would I mention something Ive not experienced ? what I do say is that they are on tight which is in contrast to your own opinion however as I am not paid by nor own the filter company I cannot comment on your own personal experience, that would be a job for them.., Thanks for taking the time to watch , pity my view upset you

@@DarrenJSpoonley Darren I paid £270.00 for the pro version I went on a hand held (with my camera on a Black Rapid strap) short walk just to check them out on my return home the lens cap was missing I have since seen on KZbin other photographers that have had the same problem one of them had three filters attached and they were knocked off they ended up in a rock pool luckily but rather silly he climbed down between waves and retrieved them after a thing like this you do loose confidence in these filters these are not cheap to replace and the lens cap costs £25.00 now that's ridiculous I contacted Kase and they offered a discount on a replacement maybe with foresight you would not leave the filters attached but it is a harsh lesson to learn and of course you loose the speed. I do like these filters but I am anxious when using them. Darren I am subscribed to your channel and will remain so........ I use the CAPTUR remote that I think you recommended thanks for that it is fantastic.

Surely its just common sense to know they could be knocked off, not sure i need to be told that. Ive just bought some and the magnet is strong enough to need a reasonable force to remove the lens cap. If you made it any stronger you would need tools to remove it. Unless they have improved it since i think its the perfect compromise between requiring reasonable force and assuming the owner understands how its attached and avoids knocking into things. Sometimes we have to just take responsibility knowing the risks and benefits. Personally i dont want the magnet any stronger

NO mate it is not common sense for a £275.00 purchase .They should stay on you have spouted a load of garbage but YOU will find out. The last two trips I went on the CPL came off the 10 stop was next This is sad kase giving these sets to photographers and they are not truthful they come off very very easily other well known companies have tried this and given up but they did not flood the pro market looking for good feedback.

You are clearly very angry with them and now me for all the garbage i spout. Lol. Maybe you had a bad batch or are you saying the magnets lose their strength over time. Mine will not come off under reasonable use currently so it must be one of the above assuming it is the filters fault. I certainly don’t intend leaving them on using my black rapid i believe Kase advise not to leave them on and certainly the way the black rapid hangs id say it pretty certain they would get knocked off at some point. I will be using for quick change on tripod so as long as magnet doesnt weaken and they drop off or drop off whilst moving tripod i dont foresee see a problem personally. But if i im proved wrong i will gladly repost if they turn out to be ineffective
