Duplieren has definitely become my favorite technique. I've messed it up a couple of times and gotten a sword to the face, but that's probably because I've been over using it a bit.

Yes, used at the wrong time can be painful. :)

Thanks for all your uploads. I'm no expert, but i think your interpretations are the most logical I've seen. I'd like to send a question: what is the difference between duplieren/mutieren and winden?
@SwordCarolina9 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I appreciate that! I see the duplieren and mutieren as specific kinds and winden. Winden can describe anytime you move from one of the hengen (ochs or pflug) into another, and can be done with any type of attack. So for instance, a duplieren can be a wind from pflug to pflug with a cut, and mutieren can be a wind from pflug to ochs with a thrust.

Dupliern is to the upper opening and mutiern is to the lower. Dupliern when your opponent is strong in the bind mutineers when they go weak in the bind. That’s my understanding

Thanks for the excellent series of videos. I'm pretty new to HEMA, and I'm using your videos to build some grounding so I can make the best use of gym/club time since I have to travel to the nearest one. I realize that in training our partners are usually affording us the opportunity to practice these techniques, which is clearly necessary. Yet, I'm interested in what this technique looks like with an uncooperative opponent? The move is fast, so I'm not sure if I've ever seen it in the sparring videos I've watched. If I have, I might just be unaware of it, but I'd be interested to see how the move is executed when the opponent is not simply standing flatfooted and still. Thanks again, guys, and keep up the good work!

doubling is really hard to pull off in sparring, though sometimes it does happen. Of course it looks a lot more messy, but it does happen here and there.

I don't think you actually need to step when performing Duplieren. If you had your distance right when throwing the original strike, you're already at a range where you can hit the other person without stepping. If you throw a strike and the opponent versetzes and remains strong in the bind, immediately do the Duplieren; it'll be much quicker because you don't need to step with it. I think youtake that step because you feel it makes you safer, but I don't think it matters much as long as you feel the bind correctly. If he's strong in the bind, you're going to catch his blade in your crossguard anyway, and if you misread him and he's actually weak, the step isn't going to save you. :) Also, I'd personally move my hands up into a higher position (right hoch hengen/ochs, in that ballpark) to cover my head, because with your hands that low, the opponent's sword's point is awfully close to your face... That'd make me feel rather uncomfortable. :p
@vonlipwig10 жыл бұрын
Addendum: Of course, AFTER you've hit him you either retreat back or move on to your right, your opponent's left side, in order to avoid getting hit in retalliation. :)

Good points. Thanks for sharing. I've been trying it with and without stepping, but I think you're right. The main issue is the range you are working in. I'll have to experiment some more. I agree with you about raising my hands higher. It was not until I saw myself on video that I realized how low they were. The blessing/curse of video. Thanks!
@petritzky4 жыл бұрын
it depends on the way you double. If you go into a higher position you sacrifice reach, because you go in a shortened position. Sometimes that makes a step necessary. Overall I agree that a step makes you slower. That is why I don't go into a high position, and if you do the doubling with maximum reach and push your cross against your opponents blade you really are as safe as in a high position.

Sword Carolina I have a question with this going to be considered a master cut because of the fact that it's very hard to counter
@wiggalama7 жыл бұрын
In my experience in kenjutsu and kendo and some cross arma training, assuming relative equal conditioning, trying move in as they are pushing away like that is very difficult. Usually,its best to let them push you black and under strike
@SwordCarolina7 жыл бұрын
wiggalama that is a fine option, one I have done myself. But it is not a Duplieren, the technique of the video, unless I am misunderstanding your description.
@TheKommissarGaming9 жыл бұрын
It seems like this technique leaves you very open to afterblow if they can bounce off of your crossguard, given their sword is kept tucked between your sword and your body. Does this often happen, or are the swords locked better than they look to be?
@SwordCarolina9 жыл бұрын
+TheKommissarGaming It has to do with their pressure in the bind. If they are Hard, pushing against your sword, their pressure keeps them against your sword. Of course, they can change their pressure after a moment, so you would want to keep moving after doing the Duplieren. If you misjudge the pressure in the bind or stop moving after the Duplieren, then yes, you are in danger of an afterblow. Though the same caveat could be said for most any technique. Thanks for the question.
@JRT1768 жыл бұрын
+TheKommissarGaming I often find myself passing backward as I cut through the face so that I step out of range of an afterblow. It isn't expressly mentioned in the source but I've found this to be helpful.

I always thought they didn't use the edge of the blade for blocking?
@SwordCarolina7 жыл бұрын
Ben Agaran any reason you think that? Where the edge is, the cross guard is, which protects the hands. In our experience you want to use your edge against the flat of the opponent. Edge beats flat. Thanks!
@benagaran207 жыл бұрын
I always thought it was to keep the edge from nicking.
@SwordCarolina7 жыл бұрын
Ben Agaran ah, I see. I do ideally want to hit my opponent's flat which will keep my edge from nicking. But if I am fighting for my life, I'm much more concerned with protecting myself than my sword. Museums are full of nicked up and broken swords.
@benagaran207 жыл бұрын
Ah ok. Yeah of course in a fight it's different. But this was a demo video so i thought I\d ask. Thanks.:)
