At Rick's Cafe in Chicago, Oscar appeared with his trio- of course he flew his own piano in for the engagement. Between sets my 75-year old Mother sat down at Oscar's piano to knock out her version of Fur Elise. I was mortified - Oscar came over and put a massive hand on each of my Mom's shoulders until she was finished. He led the applause, and then told me Mom, "That was lovely, but now I have to get back to work." My Mom got a kiss and Oscar played "Dancing in The Dark" for her upon request - her favorite tune. What class that man had!

What a lovely, lovely story. I've never had the pleasure of meeting him in person, but from my observations of him when I attended a couple of concerts he did in London, I am not at all surprised to read about his reaction to your mum's playing. She must have been in her glory and all can add is "Well done, mum!"

I heard OP told a story about being at a club where Art Tatum was playing and OP was up next. After Tatum ripped the snots out of the ivories, he got up and looked at OP and said "OK you can have what's left."

He gave at clinic at Blackhawk club in San Francisco, 1963. About ten players showed up at $7.50 a head. The trio showed us more about swing in an hour and half than four years at Juliard could ever do. The master.

I love when Oscar "sings" along with his own music. Of course, he is with his bass player Mr. Pedersen and Martin Drew on drums. They are all so Jazzy together. Love this "up beat jazz". Miss Oscar so much! . . .SYLVIA! -FL 7/24/2020

Genius! One of the most truly gifted jazz pianists to ever live! I never missed an opportunity to hear him live in concert, and got his autograph twice; the second time (1973), I walked back stage in the middle of a super stars of jazz concert to find him, and he signed his full page bio in the program.

Met Oscar in 77 in Brisbane Australia at the conservatorium hall when it was at Gardens Point. Oscar hardly in the mood for our radio interview but that's how it goes. He came only with Pass. I never understood why he chose Pedersen as a bassist but Oscar was the great man and I was not so he could pick who he wanted but, I always contrast this guy to Ray Brown and there is just no comparison Brown being the inventive line/timing genius. I will stop.... Oscar will be still be played somewhere for the next 1000 years.

Used to see him at the London House Chicago. In those days with Thigpen and Brown. The stage was only a few steps from the bar where we could sit or stand or a 2 hour set for the price of a draft, about 2 bucks.I can't say either of the two trios was better or not they were all the best.Peterson IMM was as good as any of the great classical artists I have been privileged to see.
