What's happening in Ethiopia is an indigenous, almost instinctual criticism of modernity, in view of what it has done to the popular culture of the people in the last forty or so years and a tendency to reject it altogether. It's a miracle that traditions of all sorts are not dead after all!! Even on the face of a barrage of onslaught from without, they thrive. Traditions were looked down as symbols of backwardness in the metropolitan Addis Ababa culture. There was no ideal synthesis of modernity and culture through artistic innovation rushing headlong instead, to the vogues of modern styles of life. Well, it appears the subterranean force is erupting!

Washint? - Yes! Masinko Yes! Kirar? Yes! Saxphone? No! Base? No! Keyboard? No! Unless you use it, you lose it. You don't use your cultural musical instruments? You then lose their distinctly rich and living cultural expression. You are effectively saying: Let a language die,a culture vanish and a world become extinct! .

i agree with you. you forgot kebero as well.

+ZERUBABEL NEGASH true I feel like it's a trend for habeshas to copy everything ferenj. at the same time they are dismissing thier own by calling it getrea or fara, etc. I as a habesha usa raised I strive to keep what's habesha. a

+Ruth Haile You are right,Ruth,I should have included KEBERO. But not just that. You know ,we also have ATAMO,NEGARIT,MELEKET,EMBILTA,BEGENA etc.. Again you know, that each musical instrument in turn has its own regional variation, what you may perhaps call a sub-species. Such diversity, such wealth! Yet,how could we neglect our own and go for the Ferenji ones even in our traditional songs? Is this what they call 'modernization'? I, for one, find it difficult to recognize it as such.I rather suspect this as a self-imposed and creeping acculturation with all its attendant problems. Don't you think so?
