The primary goal of the test is not for comparisons of specs of braided. It is the justification of purchasing high priced lines for the same fishing result. I drive 3.5 hours one way to fish. Tackles and gas are the cheapest expenses for me. Time is the most expensive element. And I want to land fish. However many my friends need to reduce the fishing cost. Braided lines are expensive to them.
I conducted dry (land) tests to compare generic and name brand braided fishing lines. There are huge differences in prices between generic and name brands.
So I invested for 3 rolls of KastKing from Amazon. If KastKing performs well during the dry test, this will benefit many anglers. Many anglers can save a lot of money.
I spent 15 hours to perform cast-ability, knot strength, and abrasion resistance tests. I did my best to perform test fairly and consistently.
Results: KastKing is better than or at least equal to PowerPro.
Thanks.

I've had the same KK 15, 30, and 65 on my spinning and baitcasters for last 2 years. Color looks the same now as it did 2 years ago. It does dig on the baitcasters, but not enough to affect casting distancing. I was a PP user before, but switched to the MUCH cheaper KK. I can't comment on any other strength other than the 3 that I've used.

I've got to give KastKing Braided lines and Godline Braided lines a try, they both performed exceptionally well against Power Pro lines and they cost about 3 times cheaper than Power Pro! In the past all I've ever used was Power Pro, but from now on I will buy these lines to see if they are as good or better than Power Pro! Then I will find out for sure which one is the best!

That was 15 LB test 1000 yard spool. KastKing spools come with 1000 yard spool or 500 yard spool. I prefer 1000 yard spool if available at Amazon. BTW, The 95% of fish (speck, striper, cobia, big red fish, tarpon) I caught since 2013 was on KastKing braided. I have hundred videos to prove it.

What diameter does the kast king come out to? 20lb power is at .009" diameter
@comeonfish01
@comeonfish01 7 жыл бұрын
KastKing web site indicated that .0071" for 20 LB. I don't think it is correct. KastKin is thicker by a little when they are new. But when used, PowerPro expands the diameter when the silky coat wore out. This is something I found. So 15-20# class diameters don't matter much. I casting distances are about the same for 15-20 # class.
@jmartinez0019BTZ
@jmartinez0019BTZ 7 жыл бұрын
In my research 20# kast king is .018" not sure if power pro expands but being half the diameter kast king might be why it's more expensive. I've bought kast king before I remember I replace it with power pro because of the size differences.

50# test KastKing is thicker. It is as thick as 55-60# test PowerPro. 15# and 20# test line are very close. Once PowerPro braided swells after a few trips. So I will say there is no big differences on 15# and 20# test
@davidmicallef8667
@davidmicallef8667 9 жыл бұрын
smoofssmoofs it is exactly like power pro, however the thickness is thicker on the kast king. if you want to have exact measurements you need to look at YGK X8 or Daiwa PE line, they are the best for your money. There are other PE lines out there however cost 75 to 100 USD per 300 meter. I will say it again though, for the 10 to 15 USD price range Kast King is the best line out there. in the 40 to 60 USD go for YGK and Daiwa X8 lines.
@Jlitnin01
@Jlitnin01 9 жыл бұрын
David Micallef That's absurd. YGK and Daiwa are both 3 to 4 times the price. They might be a little better, but to call them 'best for your money' is ridiculous. They are not even close to being a better value.

Johnny Lightning hello Mr lightning, before we start to fondle, do you fish and what for?
@Jlitnin01

David Micallef I fish frequently, and have been for over 30 years. I use mono when I occasionally fish fresh water for largemouth, but I use braid when I fish saltater, which is 95% of my fishing ( Snook, redfish, snapper, sea trout, flounder, Stripers, bluefish, mostly.) But it is irrelevant how I fish. The truth is that the KK 50lb (4 strand) line breaks around 42-43 lbs. I haven't tested the 8-strand KK 50lb, but I bet it's closer to the 50lb stated strength. I'm fine with 42lb of strength, because even though my Fin Nor reels have an amazing 50lb drag max, I'd hardly ever use over 30 of it, and it will hold up just fine at 30. You can get KK on Ebay for about $10, and you get 330 yards instead of 300. That''s less than half of what the others cost, so like I said, much better value. And I think the lower lb test KK lines are closer to the stated strengths than the 50 lb I tested. As for diameter, I fit over 350 yds of 50 on my Lethal 80, and I'm just fine with that too.

Growing up I used nothing but Triline XL 4,6,8 & 10lb on everything I owned.(All freshwater fishing) Fishing farm ponds, reservoirs, rivers and all type's of lakes. All of my largest catches have been with the 8lb. Using either an old Zebco 33 or Classic one spincaster reel on a cheap old 5'6"Berkley Cherrywood rod or my 1980 6' med Ugly Stick. I've landed 43" Musky, 46"carp, and countless 36"-42" catfish. No doubt, I always felt like I needed a bigger and better set up. So as I got older, my fishing equipment obsession has gotten out of control. I have spent thousands upon thousands buying better reels, better rods, better lines & tackle. Once I started saltwater fishing I figured I'd better start rigging up for some heavy duty fights. And over the past 30 yrs or so, I now use spinning reels for most of my set ups.Sorry guys but I don't like bait-casters. I have cheap ones. mid grade and wow I can't believe I spent that on a reel types. They just don't fit my fishing style I guess. My kids use them, and do pretty good with them but it's not my cup of tea. I've used Spider Wire, Power Pro, Sufix 832, Fire Line and countless others. Last year I found Kast King braid. Ordered a spool of 15lb smoke. Spooled up my favorite rod & reel and used it for a few weeks. At first, I really liked it. Very soft, strong and easy to cast. So I ordered up enough to reline a bunch of my reels. I should have never wasted my time. The line is pretty strong, but I have never gotten wind knots on so many casts in my life. I have since re-spooled most of my reels with 8-17lb Triline XL. And I use 15-40lb Power Pro on everything else. And I finally think I'm happy with everything I have. Just my experience and my taste maybe. But I wish I had 1/2 of that money back that I spent to get that knowledge. And when I go to the river of any of the secret little farm ponds with the 4-5lb Bass, I still use my old Zebco's with 8lb XL. If I were to rank the braid lines from what I've used it would be Power Pro, Spider wire, Sufix, fire line then Kast King. I'm sure Kast King works for many people, and it is by far the cheapest. I Also have a few of the Kast King spinning reels. And I would have to say, so far so good. Nice and smooth. The only thing that you have to watch is if the line lays even on the spool. I had to either add or remove washers under the spool an all of them to get them to spool evenly. But, Ive had to do that with a few of my Penn's as well. Just thought I'd put in my 2 cents since I had some time to kill.

+ ppolean. I could have written this lette myself, I have also sea fished for 15 years, Freshwater fished since the 1960's. My totally agree with your assesment of power pro. On a spinning reel it's not as crucial to casting if your braid isn't perfectly round because of the way it peels off the spool. On a baitcasting spool where the line comes off in a straight line as it spins the spool. So it's very important the braid packs tightly on the spool to avoid the problem of the braid digging into itself which will cause a backlash. So far Power Pro is the best casting braid i have used. And it does pack down lovely and tight on the spool. There are times when it might be better to use monofilament but one area braid has an advantage and thats for when lure fishing especially with large lures with heavier wire hooks like you would use for pike/musky. In the old days you lost more fish. Thats because if your lure is picked up at a distance and you strike there is so much stretch in your nylon line , by the time the lure starts to move and pull those thick wire hooks into the hard bony jaws of pike and musky you often end up just nicking the skin and no hook up. Because braid has almost no stretch the hook up is instant and a lot of fish end up hooking themselves as they turn against the lure. Braid has made lure fishing a lot more responsive as braid transmits a lot more information. You can bounce a lure off the sea bed as you fish on the drift and you can actually tell if the sea bed is sandy, rocky, kelp beds etc. Sea fishing and lure fishing are the two types of fishing where braid has really taken off. I'm about to trial some of the Chinese 10.lb braid it's marketed under the name "spectra braid" and as far as chinese braids it's regarded as one of the better ones. It's approx the equivalent to 3 to 4 pound nylon. Which is perfect for using with the tiny sizes of the balsa finnese lures made by Ugly Duckling. They make them less than 1/16th of an ounce in weight. The equivalent 10.lb nylon line is way too heavy for a tiny 100 size spinning reel and for working tiny finnese lures. I can't use 4 pound nylon because i fish in snaggy conditions so i need the higher breaking strain of braid that is very thin to work these tiny lures. Braid won't work on spincast reels so i tried the Berkley Nanofil. It's the same Polyethylene material but it's made in a different way as it is fused under heat. It works perfectly with spincast reels and it has the same high strength to low diameter like braid. feels strange like a wiry feel. But when cast it comes of the spool like any other line. Cost means i use it just for spincast reels which are rarely used anyway. All the many different Chinese braids are only made by 3 different companies if i remember right. Wholesalers buy huge spols and have labels designed for smaller retail sized spools up to 2,000 meteres. Kast King don't make braid of course it's just a generic braid identical to other named braids bought from the same manufacturer. They all work out at very similar prices.

I just purchased Kastking pink in .09, .10 and .18 mm The Diameter is completely off, the .18mm is more like a .23 power pro. I have tested .09 and .10mm and they both break at 1 or 2 kilo under their breaking strength (not from the knot, they are breaking mid line), They seem to have 25% to 35% less strength than listed. For the money its not that bad, I use it to catch bait, light trolling etc. But not for serious fishing as I am very sure it will give at some point. I use Daiwa and YGK PE lines, they are extremely soft, smooth and have a very small diameter. It does cost more but it will last you for years.

David Micallef After seeing all this videos about kastking, i have decided to buy a 500 m spool. I ordered it from China. The size was 0.09 mm and the specified breaking point on the spool was 4.55 kg. In all my tests the line broke at 4.5-4.6 kg, and once even at 5.2 kg. Everytime it broke at the knot which means the like strength is above my results. For the price i think it`s the best line you can find. I used in the past power pro and now i`m using SpiderWire ultra cast and after that i`ll use Kastking. KK has a much tighter weave than PP or SW and it doesn`t bleach that fast. Spiderwire was yellow when i bought it and after 2 hours of fishing (!!! 2 hours) the first 4-5 meters were completely white. How did you manage to break the 0.09 mm kastking line at only 2-3 kilograms?
@davidmicallef8667
@davidmicallef8667 9 жыл бұрын
smoofssmoofs I knotted the line at 2 ends, one end was attached to a clip that I have bolted to the wall and the other was attached to a scale, I slowly crank open a vice that pulls on the scale "that keeps the last measurement before breaking" and I read that. The KK did not break from the knot, it went mid line. As for checking the diameter I compared it to other braids that I purchased which are expensive and normally give you a better indication on the mm. It is very hard to measure the thickness of braid using an electronic caliper which I purchased to measure mono thicknesses which by the way are normally not accurate either, and I am talking about 30 to 40 USD per 30 meter florocarbon leaders. KK is very good for the money, don't get me wrong or anything, I dont think you can find anything better. To be fair my friend just purchased 8lb braid from china, 500 meter which we tested and it broke at 7 to 9 lb, it also has good texture however was little thicker than stated on the spool. Enjoy the braid, if you have any problems please let me know and I will do the same. Regards from Malta.

Whilst KastKing is a good, cheap braid for the occasional angler - as with most braid manufacturers, they apparently grossly understate its diameter. Looking to maximize the capacity on a spin reel, (whose stated capacity is 340m X .35mm line), I spooled it up under tension, with .25mm KastKing, yet found well over 80meters left on a 300m spool! Clearly, something's off! Given that the reel is a Shimano product, I'd be inclined to believe their claims over KastKing's. Unfortunately, my calipers don't measure such small diameters, so I can't verify it's claims.

KEY word long term durability. In salt KASt KING breaks down sooner and allows sand to impact into the line. Then You have this nice sandpaper line sawing away at your guides. If you can afford alconite guides to solve the problem you can afford power pro end of story!!!!

Your statement is true. However in my case, for the fish between 1/2 LB and 50 LB, I have different reels (different size, different drag). Having additional 20' or 150' of line doesn't benefits me at all because I already have enough lines on different reels for different species. Please let us know the species you fish for and the reel size for it. This will make us understand the benefit by having additional lines on the reels. Thanks

@troyjralph

What about diameter? The KastKing looks almost twice as thick. Nearly every brand of braid claim their diameter as X mm (e.g 0.34 mm) although in fact will be more like X + 0.05 - 0.15 mm (e.g 0.42 mm). Some brands, particularly the generic Chinese will do this to a greater extend. The resulted lines are usually far higher in their stated breaking strain and/ or line diameter (to achieve the stated breaking strain). To verify your experiments you needed to test their actual breaking strains (not stated) vs. their actual diameters (not stated). Spec variation will occur between batches, this is completely normal, it is the better/ best brands out there that are more consistent and accurate between these batches and to their specifications. I personally do not rate Power Pro, I generally like the Japanese lines like Sunline, Varivas, and Xzoga as I find they make consistent batches close to their stated diameters and braking strains.

ignition. Just a general statement for the discussion. I'm just now thinking about trying some braid, but from everything I've learned recently about mono, over-testing is normal for US line. In other countries they pretty much test to the actual strength stated, simply as a normal manufacturing practice. From what I gather the Japanese put out some serious products, I suppose because they are such a huge commercial fishing powerhouse in the world, and also probably from a cultural standpoint of quality standards for everything being as high as possible. Just general information I've gathered from researching lines.

ignition. Thanks for the reply! Your suggestions are actually why I've stayed away from braid from the very start. (I'm also very "old-school) The fact that there's so much involved with it from weave, to coatings, to thickness, blah blah blah. Mono is SO much simpler. But alas, I have a "need" that braid may be the only proper solution for, so I guess I'll jump on in and give it a shot and your input is greatly appreciated. Thanks again.

Thanks for the test but it is not a fair test - I have both powerpro and kastking and I can tell you that kastking braid is clearly thicker than powerpro for the same resistance point.
@comeonfish01
@comeonfish01 7 жыл бұрын
You are right. I mentioned the thickness differences on multiple places (fishing web sites). When people tested mono lines, mono line thickness weren't mentioned. I had found from many mono line tests that between mono lines, the thicker mono line wins when they were rated at the same strength. The testers hadn’t mentioned the thickness differences between brands of mono lines.
@comeonfish01
@comeonfish01 7 жыл бұрын
I thought it the testers (before me) also knew the mono line thickness differences, But like me, they couldn’t find the same diameter lines. So they have to go with the same strength rates. Educated anglers know you can cast far with the thinner line. Choosing thinner diameter is up to the anglers I think.
@comeonfish01
@comeonfish01 7 жыл бұрын
The thickness differences on 15-20# test (kastking and Powerpro braided) are minimal. But the thickness of 50# test Kasting is equivalent to 55# test PowerPro if there is 55#test PowerPro. So knot strength test isn't fair on my tests. However abrasion test is still fairly valid in my opinion.

I have been using KastKing for years. I use 10, 15, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60# tests for LM, shad, crappie, redfish, speckle sea trout, bull striper, bull red drum. Black drum, Cobia, Tautog, Sheepshead. I have no doubt that KastKing braided performs better or equal to Powerpro.

To me, so far there was two defective spots on KastKing, and 3 defective spots on PowerPro. KastKing 50# superior than 50# PowerPro in wreck fishing (tautog/sheepshead). I recommend KastKing as an angler who fishes a lot and try to save money on tackles

I have a kastking 40lb and powerpro 40lb but why does the power pro win everytime when i do the breaking test? i would only use kastking braided line in casual fishing but not in serious fishing such as on the boat for big game fish .Kastking line are 20% weaker and thicker than advertise online. You could use it for serious fishing if you have a big spool and buy 80lb rated but in actuality would be more like 65 lb test. If you willing the sacrifice the the amount of line your reel can handle then go right ahead and buy this line.Remember buy 20lb more than what you actually need. Powerpro 9/10 kastking 7/10 really cheap chinese braided line 5/10 This is my rating. still much better than mono. Dont let the misconception of braided line being to expensive to use than mono confuse you. braided line from china is way cheaper than mono line in usa. 1000m 100lb Super Dyneema Strong Braided Fishing Line is only $20.82 & FREE Shipping Yes, this might be thicker than power pro 100lb but at a fraction of the cost.I use this for rock fishing. Actual line strength is 65lb and still way thinner than the top quality 65lb mono.

Hello friends, I have tested Kastking Mega8. this line is thicker than for same braking strain any real PE line. in fact 2 times ticker. Kastking is cheap because its not use spectra or dynemaa (they both use PE ) as a raw material. There is no sign for it. I guess they use their own thing. Be careful when buying this line for your spool capacity.
@comeonfish01

We are all aware of the thickness of KastKing. We accommodate/adjust based on fishing techniques and lure presentations. For example, If I need a thinner line, then I will buy a thinner line regardless of the brand and price. From small fish (crappie, spot) to bigger fish (50 LB + such as bull striper/red or cobia) I use Kastking lines. I haven't had any fishing day or species I need to buy a thinner line. Few times, I added a split sinker to the Kastking main line to change the sinking rate of a lure. All my reels comes with big enough spool that hold enough lines (thick or not) for specific species. For example My Penn 6000 reel holds 300 yard+ 50 LB Kastking or 330 yard 50 LB Powerpro. All I need for cobia is 200 yard of 30# test braided. The other day I had to cut off almost entirel braided line on one reel. For Powerpro, that was $20 + expense, but for Kasting it was under $10. I cut off at lease 20" of main line after every fishing.

@comeonfish01
@comeonfish01 6 жыл бұрын
I have tested knot strength of every line I purchased a long time ago. All lines passed the knot strength tests. Actual Knot strengths were greater than the manufactures' claims. I used tuna knot (improve clinch knot) and pulled line very slowly. Under 50# test lines, I used a spring scale. greater than 50# test I used dumbell and weight plates. When I snap the lines like fighting fish do, none passed the strength that were claimed. Each knot (under 50# test lines) had different strengths even though I used the same lines. that was because I couldn't make the exact same knots. I had to do multiple test and average the results. That was why I used double surgeon's knot. This way I have the same knot for two different brands.
@comeonfish01
@comeonfish01 6 жыл бұрын
Regarding abrasion test. Again if I do individual line at a time. The surface of the hammer and my arm strength applied could be different. At 3:27, you will see I twisted the multiple lines many times (more than the video showed). I wanted to make sure that all lines had equal chances. This was a home test. I fish structures (barnacle/rocks/concrete debris). I, even manufactures, couldn't design/perform actual real life abrasion tests. This was best I could think of that time
@comeonfish01
@comeonfish01 6 жыл бұрын
I need the cheap alternative. I spent a lot of money for braided because I fish structures. Though I don't want to loose fish because of the poor quality lines. If you see my videos for past several years, I caught small to big fish (sheepshead, tautog, bull redfish, cobia, tarpon) on KastKing braided.
