This is the best BFS video so far thanks for saving me $200. I grew up using spinning reels most of my life. I have two baitcasters. I’m getting ready to sell because I can’t stand them. Backlashing is a b-+*^. I waste more time digging out a birdnest than fishing.

Don’t get me wrong. I love both baitcasters and spinning. But the backlash can be brutal

The Zephyr was the first BFS reel I purchased and it got me hooked on UL BFS. In my travels I learned what makes the BFS shine is the accuracy once you get everything dialed in (ie: the proper rod that loads up to cast light lures, the line and don't fill the spool, and most of all the casting technique) To this day I still use the Zephyr paired with and Old18 7' UL spooled with Verivas Super PE x4 (0.6 goh) and 4# copolymer leader with a 1.75-2.2g head and what ever plastic the fish are eating. A backhand small roll cast seems to work the best for me with a longer rod. You just need to let the rod load up and do all the work. Don't muscle it you'll be surprised, give it a try. Looks like you're at "MJ Park"? Good luck out there and with the reel :)

Most people have used regular baitcasters to cast down to around 1/8 for many years . I have a bfs baitcaster , but I usually go for my spinning reel because The spinning reel does a better job for me . I am more accurate casting the spinning rod and get more distance . But , I have just under 50 years using a spinning rod and only about 4 years with using a baitcaster .

The one thing BFS isn't is budget friendly. You know the phrase you get what you pay for. BFS makes you pay. The reel isn't bad but the difference between something like the Shimano Curado BFS and the Zephyr is night and day. Also that rod might be for light trolling for Kokanee. If you have the budget get the Phenix Classic BFS being local to Southern CA. Phenix Classic with the Zephyr should be a pretty nice combo for bassing too at regional parks. If not stick to the spinners they do exactly the same thing unless your sick in the head like me have 50 rods and reels and needs another one then the BFS is exactly what you need.

You would've had a much easier time with straight 4-6lb fluoro (or even mono) rather than braid. The purpose of BFS (versus ultralight spinning/SFS) is because arguably the baitcaster reels are simply a superior experience/method of reel fishing. The rod should definitely have that much wiggle/flex or even more. The Okuma Celilo is typically considered "light" rather than ultralight and moderate fast rather than fast. My experience with basically that same combo (my Okuma Celilo was only 7' rather than 7'6" and I used straight 6lb fluoro on the KastKing Zephyr BFS) was not unlike yours at first, but I was quickly able to figure it out by like the 3rd or 4th cast. That may have actually been that I've had 6+ months of fishing experience using the KastKing Zephyr (non BFS) so i was used to their magnetic braking system. Honestly, when I first fished an ultralight spinning combo I actually birdnested the spinning reel (like unrecoverable birdnest...it was embarrassing) because of how wiggly/flexible the rod was. There's definitely a learning curve. I would change your line to straight mono/fluoro, use maybe an 1/8 or even 1/4 bait (until you get used to the casting), and you'll figure it out.

I think that might be a steelhead casting rod for river fishing or a downrigger casting rod for trolling or even a side planer rod. Sorry for all the technical crap but that rod won't cut it for me for any kind of bass fishing. I'd just take it back and get your money back.

11mos to late, but: Rod is too long. Wrong weight. Wrong action. Lose the braid and use less line. 6' light /fast for bigger BFS. 6' ultralight/ fast for small BFS. 2-6# mono I cast down to 1/24oz on mine. Way more accurate than spinning gear.

1:27 what the hell is the point of putting a leader that has less strength than your line? When the idea of a leader is literally just to be a short, A LOT STONGER piece of the line so bigger fish can't bite trough it? And what the hell are you talking about the rod?? It's a light rod, so obviously it's "whippy"? That's literally the whole point of it, how else would it throw out 1-7 gram lures? And you didn't adjust the reel a single time in this video, you obviously don't know what you're doing so why make a testing video out of it... And you're also saying why get a "SPECIAL?" rod (Which is just a normal rod...) and why get a baitcaster because you can just get a spinning reel. Yeah, you can ask the same exact question the other way, why get a spinning reel when you can just get a baitcaster? Baitcaster have a lot longer castin dinstances, increased accuracy, increased sensitivity. The brake is a lot smoother and better since the spool spins to the same direction the line does. And we also have to talk about the factor where you cannot really throw above 50gram rules with a spinning reel because the line would just cut trough your finger if you''re fishing for biggger fish..
@Internetpilot
@Internetpilot 7 ай бұрын
That's actually the purpose of a leader on BFS. If you get snagged you'll break your reel or rod before you'll break off 10lb braid. So you want your leader to break. It's the same with fly fishing -- your leader (aka tippet) is actually the weakest part of your line.
@AlluzHH
@AlluzHH 7 ай бұрын
@@Internetpilot 10lb is weak af, ain't no reel breaking from that. Or a rod, because you don't put any pressure on your rod when unsnagging it from somewhere 😅 You put the drag as high as possible and pull your rod straight back.. Doesn't break anything except the line, and most of the time is just unsnags and you're good to go.. Any decent size fish will bite straight trough 10pound braid without a good leader...
@Internetpilot
@Internetpilot 7 ай бұрын
@@AlluzHH although you may not be wrong with regular fishing, you are simply wrong with BFS/SFS/Ultralight or even western/tenkara fly fishing. Most ultralight rods say right on them 2-6lb test line and they can (and trust me will) snap from using 10lb mono and not handling a snag properly. It's not just a matter of pulling the snag loose -- it's a matter of mistaking a snag for bite, and setting the hook, which will snap your rod if your line (or leader) is too strong. Also BFS reel spools are ridiculously wimpy -- you can literally deform/bend them by pinching them between two fingers (or even applying too much braking pressure with your thumb). So, yes, if you're using especially greater than the rated braid, and you put your thumb on that spool to pull out the snag, you're likely going to mess up your reel/spool. Again, the reason why he has a lighter leader is because he's fishing BFS/ultralight. He's actually doing it the correct way because the purpose of a leader in ultralight fishing is very different than regular fishing.

@@Internetpilot Thank you, this is what i wanted for an answer :D I think i owe you an apology for the earlier comment, i've fished for a couple of years now but i haven't been able to go bfs fishing yet (My reel is on the way here), this will probably save me a nice sum of money in the long run. My 10-30g rod just came and it's a bit too stuff so i don't thing it'll throw 10g lures well but it's easily the best feeling rod for my hand that i've had yet so i think i'll have to go for a 4-14g rod for my "bfs" setup since i probably wont throw anything under that and i need something to throw my basic 5-10 gram lures also. I hope it'll be what im looking for.

Too long of a rod maybe?? I was laughing cause I kinda went thru the same until got it all figured out, Now this all I use for finness fishing!! avoid a whippy rod, I have my Zephyr spooled with 6lb Mono on a 6 foot light rod and it cast a mile without any Backlash. The Lures I use are 1/16 jigs and 1/32.oz jigs. Also you are casting the darn thing like if it was a regular lure with a med/heavy rod, over your shoulder, keep in mind this is a BFS reel, the casting should be sideways or across from your body, gently, you be surprised how far it will go. Hope this helps.

I replaced the bearings on my zephyr reel and paired it with a shimano sensilite extra fast baitcasting rod and I've thrown lures 1/16 to 1/4 oz. It's not quite as whippy as what you were using and I've caught some pretty decent sized bass and small catfish with it. It's fun because small-ish fish feel like giants! That last bird's nest you got was a good one! lol

I got my zephyr on a kast king perigee with the 2 different power tips. I went with medium and medium light and I love that setup more that my SHIMANO slx bfs. The zephyr is real touchy so I think the super flexible rod is causing u more trouble. I put 10 lb braid on it and love it. I’m not targeting pan fish so. I went to bfs for the simple fact the hand movements and everything is different going from casting to spinning. Once u practice enough I can do anything with my bfs that someone could possibly do with a spinning just takes practice

@@thecsickfisherman to be honest I was a lot like your first impression. But the more I use it the more I like it. Here is a tip that will help a ton. The braid you are using is way to thick. You need something no thicker than .1mm. To get used to the casting I used Viscous 4lb test with a 1/16 oz crappie jig. Another tip is to cast way softer than what you already think is soft. And the casting distance is all in the spool tension knob.
