I don't think she needed a name change, but I totally get her points. She's being her authentic self after years of ppl telling and grooming her into who she should present herself as. People that are "stuck" being who society wants them to be, being who they were conditioned to be by associated peer groups, parents etc will not understand because they live in fear and are still seeking approval just to show parts of themselves. Looking for validation to tell them that what they are doing, saying, being is okay or not. What Kat is doing is breaking the mold that she thought that she had to fit in , just as Miley Cyrus did, Britney Spears and as many people do. That are under the pressures of being in the spotlight and outside of it. She is looking for her authentic self and trying to find pieces that she never knew had the right access, all while being an "Idle" always expected to be pretty, beautiful Kat Graham. Which she still is, even more so now because there is nothing more beautiful then finding the courage to live your truth. Years from now people that laughed at her will have a different perspective on everything she said. Im not sure who said she was Dark, I am very spiritual and am someone who taps into energies every day. Her energy was not dark, she was just very serious and sure of what direction she is going. And Naturally on the defense because people tend to be ignorant and notice they were laughing at her at first and slowly began to listen more towards the end. If you dont belive in what youre doing how can you expect anyone else to

Hollywood has a habit of forcing celebrities to take on/uphold a particular persona, provoking an extreme reaction in opposition to it. It’s made worse, when you must consider your fan base - many of whom are influenced/guided by you. The pressure to not disappoint them is comparative to not wanting to disappoint yourself (specifically your younger self). It is that, by failing them you are failing you before. (So, what?) While it can cause you to push harder, you do risk becoming disingenuous. Always keep in mind, your journey of self-discovery involves only you. When you begin involving others it becomes less about you and more about who they need you to be. With that said, Kat Graham is not the alter ego… who and what she was made to represent is.

I like Kat Graham and I wish the best for her, and I'm very happy that she's finally embracing her natural hair. But her stories are so inconsistent and keep changing every time because what does Taro Gato got to do with a Zulu bridal headdress she wore in the other interview? How does that become West African Liberian... when it's cultural elements from all the way in Southern Africa. And then in some insta pictures, she wears stuff from a whole nother different culture as well. And even the name, Toro Gato, that's Spanish i-- Anyways chile, as someone said in another video, it feels like this is just a bunch of cultures she's ignorantly mishmoshing. Lol nothing screams American more than bundling all separate unique African cultures and identities into one "African" identity. All in all I'm calling bull on all this (pun unintended). It doesn't feel sincere. I think it's a publicity stunt for her album or she's having an existential crisis. Plus idk why Kat/Toro think Africans just be walking around with painted faces and no eyebrows, or with strange robes like the other video. If i were to randomly see her on the street many folks out here would probably think she's crazy pants or into some deep witchcraft chile.

And it hasn't even been a month since these Toro Gato interviews aired, but on her insta stories from the past few days, it looks like she's quickly reverting back to her old self--smiling big with the same ol eurocentric wigs and glam Hollywood dresses that she was alluding to utterly despising and abhoring in these wacky interviews lol. @D.d Onews Onews I get that historically, most criticism of anything related to black artistry has often come from a place of racism and/or classism, sexism, etc., but that's not what I was saying at all. That's also nowhere near to what was in my heart when I wrote my original comment. So, believe what you'd like to believe, but your generalization is incorrect. My criticism is not about how she looks; it was about how she explains or feels the need to explain how she looks. And it's not totally directed at her either; it's kind of a lamentable thing about society in general. Basically, I would love nothing more than to see a world of more people being comfortable with radical self-expression like hers. What she's doing is shocking and provocative to some people, but I just think it's beautiful and artistic, and art shouldn't have to explain itself. It's sad that she feels like she needs to explain herself. Grace Jones is probably a great example of a radically self-expressed black woman, and she just owned that shit and didn't really bother with dumb questions like "why?" or "what does it mean?" In no way would I want to change how Toro Gato looks or identifies now, I would've just changed the interview to be more focused on her new music with like, "Oh yeah, I'm Toro Gato now, so deal with it." To me, that would've been far more powerful and punk in a way, so it just seems like a missed opportunity is all. But again, you can totally disagree with me and say that the explanation she gave was actually necessary, and we can agree to disagree.

Not sure why the BIG explanation. She's trying something different. No big deal. Gaga. Madonna many others ahead of her have done this. Truthfully. I had to Google her name to know who she is. No biggie

She's not being what Hollywood demanded she be.

I wouldn't say she's having a mid life crisis because she's only in her 30s and it's still a little early for that. I think it might be more of a delusional mental breakdown and a desperate attempt to seek attention due to her career being on the downturn right now.

After how she was treated in Hollywood I understand the need she feels to reinvent herself.

And all this talk about the rebrand ties back to her man. He got into her head. Why this though? Idk… it’s giving very much “lost it”

I’m confused as to why some are judging her and her name change (which is amazing by the way) but completely accept people that switch genders. EVERYONE should be allowed grace to be their authentic self in how they see fit!!

I can't help but think the face paint is supposed to make her face appear more symmetrical.
