Unfortunately, it's not a hard fast formula. It really depends on the kind of pasture you're working with. We currently run 6 sheep on 1.5 acres.

How much does livestock guardian dog cost you for feeding? Did you get a dog that was trained or did you train him yourself?

We got her already trained. She doesn't cost very much to keep at all. I think we've purchased two 50lb bags of dog feed this year because she prefers butchering scraps. Since we process our own animals, we just keep everything back for her. She snubs her nose at dog food for the most part.

@@thepasturepioneers Thanks for the response. I hadn't figured in that in butchering animals that you would get enough scraps to maintain a dog. Do you cook the scraps, or feed her raw?

Well, we've done three sheep, two pigs, a beef, and then got two deer during the hunting season. It adds up. We feed her raw.
