From a comment, years ago:
This song is about two lovers. The singer is singing about how it's in her lover's nature to roll and wander around, and eventually apart from her. She accepts this and waits for her lover, because she knows that her lover will always
eventually
come
rolling
back
to her.

I don't know anything about Katamari Damacy, but it certainly is a REALLY good song. Not quite one of my favorites, but that's not a bad thing. I've heard so much video game music, so that's still really good. My absolute favorites are ThemeX and various Minecraft tracks. And some other songs from other games.

[Translated Lyrics] Lying in the sun Brilliantly bright My heart will Swell and grow sunny Those two eyes Right down to the pupils Are like sunflowers And their seeds A lover's chat (the stories told) Pile up (and roll over each other) A clumped-up bundle An entanglement Being Together Is absolutely Necessary! Except you are drawing out your important dream Until you're finished, throughout it all, I'll be here waiting for you You're lonely rolling star Come on, never stop standing still! You're lonely rolling star So, face forward and keeping going! A sky of stars Sparkling and glittering Like confetti Waiting to congratulate you It invites Sweet Painful Thoughts The thoughts that I've embraced roil and dance in the night sky All of a sudden I want to lend a hand, to deliver myself by your side You're lonely rolling star Don't ever give up! You're lonely rolling star Don't forget to call sometimes! You're lonely rolling star I want to come to you, right now! You're lonely rolling star Ahh, with that last sigh, I'm spilled over the limit Lonely, lonely, lonely, roller...… Next month, shall we meet at that place? You're lonely rolling star Come on, never stop standing still! You're lonely rolling star Remember me, okay? You're lonely rolling star I can't keep on waiting! You're lonely rolling star So face forward and keep going!

Patches of sunlight scattered everywhere Heart seems like it'll be sunny today Two people's gazes Like sunflower seeds Making conversation Overlapping Piling up Getting tangled Being together absolutely inevitable But you have an important dream to paint So until it's over-yes, I'll be waiting right here You're lonely rolling star Don't stop, now! You're lonely rolling star Now face forward and go! Starry sky sparkling Looks like konpeitou Sweet but bittersweet feelings well up Thoughts of that embrace dance in the sky They'll reach you where you dove down to, so- You're lonely rolling star You'd better not give up! You're lonely rolling star Call once in a while You're lonely rolling star I want to see you right away You're lonely rolling star Ah, a single sigh escapes (bridge) How about we meet at that spot again next month? Despite most having a language barrier, we all felt the same feeling together just by listening to the song and how the singer expressed this bittersweet tone that I think it’s hard to even expressed just in speaking. First listened to this song durning middle school when my friend brought over Katamari one time. So touching, still makes me cry sometimes when I hear it. This song inspired me to learn Japanese. Now I’m almost 30, live in Japan, and I see all the things I used to roll up and turn into stars. Funny how life goes sometimes. I also majored Astrophysics which, come to think of it, is quite fitting.

She was a lot older than me (about a decade more), so she ended up moving away to California not too long after and I never get to see her anymore. Now, listening to this song reminds me of her. I hope she’s doing well and I can see her again some day... something about it kind of makes me want to cry. Showing sadness and remorse are very frowned upon in Japanese culture. You're expected to be calm and composed at all times. The boss of my friend even told her that her grandmother, who just passed away that day, would have been be proud if she still went to work instead of take a day of to cope. The only real exception is when adults make a big dramatic show of how loudly they cry at their parents funeral to demonstrate they truly loved their parents and sometimes even who the closer sibling was.
@adammilner6195
@adammilner6195 3 жыл бұрын
@@zodayn4767 are you saying there are no actually sad Japanese songs at all? I'm thinking it's not such a simple explanation. There's quite a few american songs that have an upbeat tempo with sad lyrics. It actually can be a very effective way of communicating emotion through music. It usually implies a level of catharsis or at least acceptance. Think Little Talks by Of Monsters and Men. If this song was trying to conceal strong emotion like you say, it wouldn't have such clearly sad lyrics. Sometimes people, and especially artists, are more complicated than a single cultural stereotype, no matter how true it may be. Art has always been an area where people are free to express emotions that they may not share normally, and I seriously doubt Japan is an exception to that.
@tntmage7-250

@@adammilner6195 there are absolutely sad Japanese songs. I can’t name them off the top of my head, but they’re often rather different from American sad songs in the sense that they make greater use of the instruments backing the vocals. Also there is a lot more of the upbeat instrumental parts with sad vocals, which I think does a great job conveying a sense of melancholy that is often missed in other music.

Someone commented this here at some point but it appears to have been lost so I'll repeat the story because by god does it make this song so much more impactful. The artist Kabata Saki was an up and coming Jpop star who had got her start through a television talent show. However as her career was picking up her close friend Shimizu Kazuhiko, who was a huge inspiration for her music, died tragically in a car accident. She went on to take 6 month hiatus from making music, or really having any kind of public presence at all. But there was one exception. Lonely Rolling Star for Katamari Damacy released in March of 2004. I'm sure plenty of people have already paraphrased the meaning of the song, but in a brief summary the singer is singing about her lover (or perhaps acquaintance) who is often/always away for one reason or another. Perhaps it's due to unforeseen circumstances, or maybe it's just a part of who they are. The song is about the singer resigning to wait for them because she knows that eventually they'll wander back to her. Will her lover ever return we may never know. But she'll still be waiting, and perhaps one day they'll find her or vice versa. At it's core the song is about accepting loss and moving on while coming to accept and learn from your past experiences. I'm sure many of you have gone through periods of loss in your life that have overwhelmed you with emotion, too powerful to put into words. Kabata's heart and soul has been poured into every word. A outcry of pure emotion. Of sadness, of grief, but also of hope and optimism. This is Lonely Rolling Star and it's an absolute masterpiece. And out there somewhere, Kabata's friend is almost certainly rolling through the sky... searching.

I bought the game yesterday for my Switch, a small gift for my 30th birthday, since I never had the chance to play it before. Awesome game of course, and I fell in love since the first time I heard this song. It's a good time to hear it, makes me think of all the people who rolled away from my life and I would like to meet again, and makes me think of myself as a lonely star, leaving my country to get a PhD. I miss home, and I try to keep going forward, but it's not always easy.

Hello from a fellow lonely star. I think that no matter how insignificant we feel against the challenges we face, just like the Prince facing up against the world, we can always get through and keep rolling forward. Life is always going forward, and even if we don't realize, we go forward with it day after day. So, no matter if you take ten steps a day or just a single one, keep rolling, lonely star! Just like summer after winter, the good times will always roll back around!

This makes me sad.. I can't explain it.. It's a bittersweet song. This song, no matter how much time passes, will forever be my most cherished video game song. I can't listen to it for long without fighting the inevitable urge to cry. Something about it.. The melody.. The lyrics.. No one can deny it. There is a beauty to things that don't last forever. A sadness for the impermanence of things.. But a happiness to feel that we all were able to witness and experience it. To cherish those fleeting dreams.. And to appreciate them for what they were. Such is life. So.. To those out there reading this: Keep on rolling. Reach for your dreams that lay beyond the stars. No matter what happens.. It'll be okay. It will be okay..

For some reason I imagine a music video where a guy keeps frantically trying to roll a bigger Katamari which is representative of him trying to get his life together, with a girl subtly helping him along the way, but with him never taking notice. Then at the climax of the song she gets caught in his chaotic Katamari, and when they finally come to a stop it is destroyed. But then she helps him in starting a new, smaller Katamari at a controlled pace, as if to say "baby steps"

This song made me so happy. Then i read the lyrics and it made me even happier. They are a bit heavy, but they're just real and a perfect example of what i love about a lot of Japanese art. Its a very Buddhist theme of balance. Its like we want be with people we love some times. That's sad. But the best thing will always be to let go and wish them the best. Yes its lonely, but it doesn't mean we can't be happy. Just like a song can be deep but also just a fun song on a video game.

Did anyone else get a very happy and inspiring feel from this song? Like, the Japanese lyrics are a bit sad, but I mean just in general to the song and the game. The Prince is so small but expected of something much bigger than him, and bossed around by a force even larger than that. But he could still recreate an entire galaxy and complete that task presented to him. Maybe I'm looking too far deep into Katamari, but that's just how I interpret it.

I always loved this song from the original Katamari game I grew up playing with my father and sister. Recently I moved overseas to properly start my solo life far from home... And now re-listening to it and re-discovering the lyrics, I just can't help but calling them and catching up with them. The lyrics "Now, face forward and go" (Saa, Mae wo muite ikou), "Don't give up, alright?" (Akiramenaideyo, ne?) and "Gimme a call sometimes"(Tama ni wa denwa shite) especially pull on the heart strings.

This song evokes such vivid memories and feelings. In elementary school, I heard it so many times while playing Katamari Damacy with my oldest sister on our PS2, where I was blissfully ignorant to the lyrics and instead jammed hardcore to the rhythm and melodies. Then, for 4 years throughout university, I was in a long-distance relationship with my best friend. One of the recurring themes in our conversations about the health and sustainability of our relationship involved our willingness to wait for each other. It was so difficult at times, but we knew that seeing each other during breaks made the loneliness worthwhile, and we tried our best to support the other's individual journey/aspirations despite the emotional sacrifices that often coincided. This past summer after I finished school and came home to quarantine while applying for jobs, we reunited and spent the whole summer together, relishing the warmth together that we had so sorely missed over the previous 4 years. Unfortunately, by the end of the summer, I had discovered their unfaithfulness and decided to end the relationship. It was very difficult. I am a fairly social person, so the isolation of quarantine during this pandemic has taken quite a toll on my mental health at times, particularly after the events of the summer. Connecting with friends and family over virtual calls has been truly a life-saving activity. For a while there, I couldn't help but apply this song to my previous relationship, which made it quite sad. I know that eventually in the series of this song's appearances, the duo reunites, but I do not want that nor do I foresee it. I realized recently that during my relationship, I really sacrificed many meaningful friendships along the way. The energy that could have been dedicated to maintaining those bonds instead was consistently spent trying to hold together a good-but-labor-intensive long-distance relationship. I have been enjoying reconnecting with the other people I care about in my life in recent months, hearing about their own goals and journies, and lending support however I may. Lonely Rolling Star is still my favorite song, because now I think of the friends and family that are all off rolling their own katamaris. We may not be in the same place, but I will support them as their friend/sibling however I can, we patience and love. I look forward to future times when we may be in the same place again and enjoy whatever activities we do together. Thank you anyone who is reading. I hope you are feeling healthy, staying safe, and prioritizing personal care. Roll on!

When that chorus started to I got so balls deep into this game. It felt like I was pushing this giant ball rolling up cows and cars and benches. Easily one of the best video game experiences of my life. Flash forward today and I start reading what the song is about and it hits just as hard. Now that is a great video game

On top of that, maybe you don't know this, but this was the first song that the singer recorded after taking a break because a close friend of hers had passed away due to a car crash accident. You can feel the melancholy in her voice, yet at the same time her willingness to keep going.

This song is somehow happy and sad at the same time. I have no clue how or why, but I love it.

The song speaks to me because I have ADHD and it’s clearly a song about a dude who has ADHD and thus gos and does stuff and doesn’t focus on his relationship, so this song described ADHD with perfect accuracy before it was a term

I remember playing this game when I was only 7 years old... and at the time I never beat Katamari, this song was the final one I heard and has always been stuck in my head since, I could never find it. I'm now 22, and finally found this song again with the release of Reroll. Words can't express the feelings in my heart when I heard this familiar tune... and this time I'll make sure I never forget it. ^_^

This song is such a sweet mix of uplifting beats and vocals from a singer with a youthful and unique voice. Somehow it manages to be bouncy and bright while also having an edge of sadness. It's a song that stays with you for a long, long time.

games like katamari are what remind me that things get better, and that no matter what problems the world has or how meaningless it seems sometimes theres always happiness to be found. this cheery little song only lasts a little under 6 minutes, I can't even understand the words directly, and yet it gives me more hope than anything else. no matter what happens, this song will take a hell of a long time to fade into obscurity because of how damn happy and powerful it is in such a beautiful and simple way.

God, I love the part from 3:35 to 3:46. Something about the absurdly catchy melancholy combo of the wubby bass and the little arpeggio just never fails to give me chills. The whole song is amazing, but I really wish the groove in that part lasted for longer, it's just too good.

There's two kinds of people here. One kind is reminiscing about childhood memories and the sadness of the song, and about what the song means to them in relation to both. The other kind is reminiscing about a sweedish man and CBT.
