Katamari Damacy was one of the most defining games that changed the way I think about videogames as an art form. It's a game about connection, it's a game about forgiving your father, it's a game about embracing positivity even in the face of meaninglessness, and it's a game about rolling things up into a ball and exploding them. When I finished the game completely back in like 2005, I had to go stand in the shower and weep because now I could never again experience a part of such a moving piece of art with fresh eyes. I could never again experience it for the first time.

katarmari is SUCH a fun weekend or single night game, its short, its fun, its silly and it such a novel concept, and its not really hard so you can plow through it with no inhibitions. Katamari on the rocks is kind of the theme song, and on the rocks kind signifies the easy listening nature. Theres an on the swing, an on the funk, on the moog, on the rhodes and on the wings, and most of them are more obvious than on the rocks to be fair
@NipplesTheEnchilada23239 ай бұрын
Katamari basically means ''to clump'', which is a fair description of the gameplay, as that is what you do. This series is full of great music, like ''The Moon and the Prince'', "Everlasting Love'', and ''Lonely Rolling Star''. I'd also recommend to check the series out, as the first two games in the series got Remakes that are out on basically everything, and it is really unique.
@Witchtimez9 ай бұрын
'it's like a fever dream' - yea that could basically be a review of the series 😂 there's not too much story to the game, so it's easy to just tell you the story is based off a surprisingly simple premise: The King of the Cosmos (thumbnail #2) got drunk and knocked the stars out of the sky. So you, the tiny prince, have to roll up a bunch of random things so they can replace the stars good ol' dad knocked down. And yes, that was mostly Japanese lyrics until they went full crazy bus

Katamari has a legendary soundtrack, especially the first entry. As I understand it (other comments will probably clarify), the composer specifically sought out formerly popular Japanese artists that had fallen out of the limelight to contribute to the OST, hence the retro-pop vibe to the whole thing.
@tiltedlampshade6 ай бұрын
Yeah. I heard they spent more of the budget on the music then the rest of the game.

The second one gets so much funnier when you understand the Japanese, because he's just riffing on the word "katamari" and the concept of rolling things up and at some point he just starts singing "Well, I'm tired now, can't think of anything," etc. Hilarious track

Let's gooooooo! I love this game, and all the music that comes with it. I remember the hype that surrounded this game when it first came out in North America - They just showed footage of gameplay and some bizarre cut-scenes with that song playing in the background. It was wild. Have you ever had a moment where you could basically understand what you were seeing, but still kept asking yourself what the hell is going on? That's what it was like seeing that ad. I honestly feel like the soundtrack for this game is seriously underrated. It's so diverse, but nothing seems out of place. I highly recommend "Lonely Rolling Star", "Crimson Rose and Gin Tonic", "Que Sera Sera", "The Moon and The Prince", and "Walking on a Star". I know that's a lot, but I actually left out a few others favorites like "You Are Smart" and "Katamari Mambo"... In fact, just listen to the whole soundtrack. It's worth it. EDIT: I just realized that the second song was along the same lines as Soken singing "La-Hee". It's the shit-post version of the original.

So, not fluent in Japanese, but for the We Love Katamari version, the singer seems to basically go on a ramble about "What is 'katamari'?" and trying to figure out what it really means kinda like how you would think about something in your mind. "What is X?" "Oh X is Y" "But if X is Y then..." kind of thought process.

A re-release of the original KD is available on Steam. I picked up the initial release way back on PS2 when it came out as a discount title for $20. I looked at the packaging and thought, "These people are on acid - but hell, it's twenty bucks, I'll give it a shot." Having played strengthened my initial impression, and I have never regretted it. The rest of the music is amazing, too, and includes songs that are tributes to styles such as Big Band and vocalists such as Sinatra. Look for the "Katamari Fortissimo Damacy" soundtrack disc.

I loved the first game when I played it in college, and the soundtrack just blew me away, so much character and enjoyability. I made my own rendition of another song, Que Sera Sera, off the soundtrack. I pretty much 100% d the whole game except for a glitch that wouldn't allow me to get a specific present in level 6 or something. I never played the second one and heard that terrible a capella rendition, but I saw my sister playing it which was what inspired me to buy the first one to play for myself. I also watched her play some of the 3rd one for the PS3 and it wasn't as good, to me 1 and 2 looked like the gems of the franchise

The first two Katamari games are easily in the running for my favorite game OSTs, right up there with FF7, Castlevania SotN, and Castlevania Curse of Darkness, that's probably my top 4. I reckon the only reason anyone forgets to name them as the one of best OSTs is due to all the vocals, which isn't a very traditional game-like.

Its basically an arcade style score attack game with various levels, where you collect objects into a junk ball in order to make your ball capable of grabbing increasingly larger things. I want to say the original was a surprise hit, but then they tried to force it into an annual franchise for like 5 years. Its currently making something of a resurgence with remasters being released with several years between them.

One of the main reasons people love Katamari is the music. I really hope people have suggested masterpieces like Lonely Rolling Star or Katamaritaino (Roll me in). Katamari is certainly a unique franchise. It is ironic since it's creator, Keita Takahashi, is very vocal against franchise's and prefers to do new projects instead. He left the series after We Love Katamari because of that mindset. The games are oddly addictive with moon logic as you play as the Prince of All Cosmos making new stars and planets after your father, the King of All Cosmos, destroyed it all in a drunken bender of destruction by rolling up anything you can find to make new ones. It's all very weird, tongue and cheek, and very addictive. The whole soundtrack is amazing and really iconic. Basically every track is a banger.

I don't think Smooth McGroove was that inspirational for game music... Maybe for acapella covers... I'm not aware of him being that popular in Japan either... But either way, if the acapella version was in the original release of the game, I think it predates Smooth McGroove's channel by 5 or more years... On top of this, I don't think it's that crazy for creative music types to be interested in acapella music before that and they may even arrive at it by accident... I'm pretty sure I've heard of composers and the like sketching out music using recorded vocal tracks, especially those more familiar with vocals and not so much with instruments... Although in this case I think they were likely doing the acapella for fun. .... But hey, Smooth Mcgroove is great, so I wouldn't blame them if they were inspired by him lol... Also possible that he might have been inspired by this track, although I'm not sure if he was aware of it or not... I forget if he ever did covers of these games... And can't be bothered to check right now ^_^;;
