The sad thing is that Katic and Fillion couldn't stand to work together at the end such that they increasingly didn't act together. Instead, the directors used stand-ins and shots from angles, dim lighting, obscured faces, over the shoulder shots, partial side profile shots, and then edits to create the illusion that they were. The scene at end of this video, starting at 14:05, is a great example of the two of them shooting the scene separately and techniques then used make you think they were together. You can see the same throughout the 8th season (if one happened; I'm working to convince myself the series ended with the S7 finale), and the use of scripts, too, that frequently kept the characters apart and in separate scenes. Such a pity the series ended the way it did, including the firing of Katic and the unexpected non-renewal that followed. Oh, well, don't be sad it ended and ended the way it did, be happy we got the earlier seasons.
