The temptation to watch a live Kate Bush performance is strong because there are just so few of them. While this performance is excellent in its own way - although it can seem a little rushed to some who are more familiar with the album track - the official recording with official music video is musically, vocally and visually much more impactful.

She is making comparisons between the innocent child in the womb being subjected to everything her mother ingested and the innocent population being subjected to the after effects of a nuclear bomb. Neither have any say in the matter. If you want to hear more if Kate live I recommend 'The Wedding List' it's on KZbin.

Like other comments here, I do strongly recommend that you also listen/watch the official music video as there's so much more to the song than this simple live version. Kate did have Pink Floyd when she composed it, so a listen to the album version is worth a listen to see if you can detect the influences. Also, some of Kate's vocals on the album also foreshadowed what she did on her following album "The Dreaming." That period in the 1980s was a time when in the UK and Europe, there was a real fear that the " cold war" was going to turn hot. Around the same time, I attended a special screening of "The War Game," a BBC drame documentary from the 1960s that had never been broadcast (although strangely, it did win an Oscar for best documentary), I also bought books with such uplifting titles as "London after the bomb" and "Doomsday: Britain after nuclear attack" . A few years after this song, the BBC broadcast a new drama documentary called Threads again dealing with the effects of a nuclear strike on the UK, although focusing mainly on a single medium-sized city, Sheffield. It's an extremely powerful piece of work, I found it very difficult to sleep after watching it. When the BBC broadcasted again, they also showed the now no longer banned "The War Game" as a double feature. This was also the period during which nuclear cruise missiles were deployed to the UK, resulting in significant public protests. On the European mainland, in addition to curise missiles, Pershing missiles were also deployed. There was a very popular poster titled "Gone With The Wind" with Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher together, and in the background, there was a mushroom cloud. One of the strap lines read: "She promised follow him to the end of the earth. He promised to organise it.". It's now a classic political poster. So that gives you a favour of what was happening over that period of the 1980s. Once again, I strongly recommend that you watch the official music video. There's so much added depth to the album track. Thank you for continuing to react to the genius that's Kate Bush, I'm so pleased that the effect of Stranger Things is that a whole new generation has been made aware of her music. I'm particularly pleased that her profile has increased massively in North America, where before she was certainly popular on student radio but hadn't really broken through into the mainstream. As for me, I've been a fan since the beginning, hearing Capital Radio playing this strange song, "Wuthering Heights," when they shouldn't, well in advance of the actual single release.,watching the "White Dress" version of the music video on "Top Of The Pops" sealed the deal. 😀

Very cool stripped down version, just Kate. The album version is very Pink Floyd-ish. She captures the breathing sensation wonderfully with the music and it's about twice as long. She is singing from the prosective of a fetus. I also find her reference to reincarnation "I've been out before" interesting. She was like 21 when she wrote it.

Hi and thanks for another really enjoyable Kate Bush reaction. And this really is a gorgeous version of this song. But as others have said, you really, really, REALLY, need to take a listen to the original album version of 'Breathing' - whether just via the audio version from off the album, or by way of the official video (I prefer the audio only approach because I think the video can appear a little bit dated nowadays), because the vocal performance Kate delivers is nothing short of sensational and is one of her greatest vocals. it really does need to be heard to be believed. 'Army Dreamers' and 'breathing' were the two concluding songs from her wonderful, and record breaking 1980 album "Never For Ever.' Together they are a glorious conclusion to one of her outstanding albums. Thanks again!

Ironically, we did all stop worrying and learned how to live with the bomb, but in 1980 we were still learning how... and we were still worried... very worried. I don't know if current artists are making anything as artistic and meaningful as this, but if they are I'm not aware. Beautiful stuff, and honest too she was always a smoker, Benson & Hedges iirc.
