In the song Kate looks back on her life and laments about different joys and sorrows. The "George the Wipe" reference is a studio technician that apparently erased a complete tape of one of Kate's recordings by accident (although some people in her circle have said that Kate pulled a practical joke on the guy, thus her lyrics "Oh God I can't stop laughing, this sense of humor of mine, it isn't funny at all"). Kate wrote the line "to those we love, to those who will survive" for her mother, Hannah, who was sick at the time of recording (who later passed away). At the end of the song, she mentions several people in her life who had died: "Maureen" was Kate's aunt, "Bubba" was Gary Hurst, one of her dance partners, "S'Murph" was her guitarist, Allan Murphy, "Teddy" was John Barrett, a sound engineer at Abbey Road studios where she recorded Never For Ever (they used to have chair spinning contests in the control room to see who would get sick first - Kate always won because she knew how to pirouette and move her head!!), "Michael" was famous film director Michael Powell (director of the movie The Red Shoes), whom she met on a snowy day in New York City shortly before his death from cancer in 1990, and finally, "Bill" was Bill Duffield, Kate's lighting director on her 1979 tour, who died in a tragic fall through a stage trap door just before the tour started

Great reaction! I think you have to have 5 or 6 decades of life under your belt to really get the snow sequence. How people flit into your life and entangle into your life for a bit, then float out of sight... Maybe not, but it certainly was needed in my case. I certainly didn't fully get it 30 years ago. it makes me cry now.

This is the most perfect Kate Bush reaction I've ever seen, it made me so happy! I love this song, one of the most beautiful songs ever written. It's definitely impossible to not cry to this song. The video is also art! It's from a musical short film she made. All of the people she sings about at the end is people she knew that have passed away. The saddest one for me is Bill, he was her lighting technician on her first tour and died within the first days after an accident, she has a song dedicated to him called Blow Away (For Bill) and it's one of my favorites. She does have more ballads similar to this, but most of her music is very different and hopefully you will like that side of her too! She will blow your mind.

Welcome to the world of Kate Bush. One of the very few truly great geniuses and one of the most often cited performers who have influenced female (and male) singer/songwriters who came after her. It is one of the great injustices in music that she did not make it bigger in the States, even allowing for the fact she did not help herself by not touring (after 1979) or doing much promotion of her work. Writing songs from the age of thirteen, she is an accomplished pianist, trained in dance and mime, sole producer of her own records from her fourth album onwards and director of music videos. She is a one-off with a style all her own, and with one of the most unique voices in music. My recommendations for you to try out next include the iconic music videos for ‘Running Up That Hill’, ‘Cloudbusting’ and ‘Babooshka’, the emotionally charged videos for ‘This Woman’s Work’ and duet with Peter Gabriel ‘Don’t Give Up’, and then maybe her first single released when she was nineteen ‘Wuthering Heights’. Dive in and enjoy the world of Kate Bush. Actually, you can’t go wrong with any of Kate’s music videos.

SteveR, I'm so disappointed that Kate did not receive the Rock and Roll Hall of fame award she was nominated for recently. I'm stunned she didn't get one, and stunned that so many did not vote her in. If anyone deserves it she most definitely did and does!

In terms of music videos I would add "Army Dreamers" and Breathing from the album "Never For Ever", the "Hounds of Love" from the "Hounds of Love" Album. Then if are interested in something quite different from Kate I suggest "Sat In Your Lap", "Suspended In Gaffa" and "The Dreaming" from the album "The Dreaming". If you want to look at her earliest work then from her debut album "The Kick Inside" in addition to her debut single "Wuthering Heights", I also suggest "The Man With The Child In His Eyes". For Kate's second album "Lionheart", released in the same year, I would also consider Wow and "Hammer Horror". Then as a bonus you look at "Experiment IV" a brand new song that unexpectedly appeared on her compilation album "The Whole Story". If you want to gain an appreciation of how Kate has evolved over the years you could listen to her studio albums in release order: 1978 - "The Kick Inside" 1978 - Lionheart 1980 - Never for Ever 1982 - The Dreaming 1985 - Hounds of Love 1989 - The Sensual World 1993 - The Red Shoes 2005 - Aerial 2011 - Director's Cut [consists of songs from earlier albums which have been either remixed and restructured or re-recorded completely] 2011 - 50 Words for Song There's also a live album recorded during her 22-date sell out residency "Before the Dawn" at the Hammersmith Apollo in London, attended by people lucky enough to get a ticket when they went on sale. I include myself in that select group, since every ticket sold out in about 15 minutes! 2016 - Before the Dawn Queueing up waiting to go in, it was very interesting to find out where people had travelled from, for the concert, examples included America, Australia and New Zealand to name a few. Since I live in London my journey was rather shorter. I have been a fan of Kate from the beginning it helped that I resided in the same part of London as Kate did. I do find it to be a crying shame that she isn't as popular in America as she is in the rest of the world. I find it to be a disgrace that she failed for third time to be inducted into the "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame" if anyone deserves to be included it's Kate. Her legacy and the number of artists that say that she influenced them is just crazy.

Alan Murphy, Kate’s guitarist, does get a mention in the song (“Smurph”) and did pass in the circumstances described. But the “waving his walking stick” lyric was a reference to a meeting Kate had with that great British film maker Michael Powell who she greatly admired. Powell, in partnership with Emeric Pressburger, made the film ‘The Red Shoes’. At the time of that meeting Powell was in his 80s and terminally ill from cancer.

You are very worthy of reacting to Kate's music, unlike some other reactors who only could not stop laughing, because they did not get the message Kate is telling with her music. She is such a wonderful storyteller. Your reaction gives me chills of recognition. This piece is Kate being grateful for the mondain moments in life combined with the respect she gives to people she worked with, who have passed away during her career. Very very touching if you know the history. Great storytelling tracks: The Sensual World, Cloudbusting, The Fog, Mother Stands For Comfort, You're The One, Among Angels, This Woman's Work, A Coral Room. Also check out All The Love, Breathing, James And The Cold Gun, Moving, Houdini, The Man With The Child In His Eyes, Wow, Wuthering Heights (her debut). But if you really dare, the second half of the album Hounds Of Love beginning with And Dream Of Sheep (side two, a conceptpiece called 'The Ninth Wave') will portrait Kate at her strongest musicwriting. Running Up that Hill is the albumopener here by the way.

Kate may be the single most influential female voice of the last three decades, now everone sounds like her, Lol.. Florence and the Machine, Beth Gibons, even Lady Gaga borrowed a few things. Kate brought it all out even before the end of the 70s and still in her teens..
@philfoster87892 жыл бұрын
Mark: Yes and no, sadly. (Unless - 'Lol' comment - you're being ironic...?) Unfortunately, most chart music nowadays seems to be autotuned material, bland, or rap: not very inspirational - and very "samey". Although, granted, the Kate Bush influence on Florence and the Machine has been noted, there is just no beating the original! (As musician, Del Palmer - who now won't work with other well-known artists - has stated: 'No one even comes close'.) Great to see "Running Up That Hill" charting again, though. (But it really shows up most of the other songs it is listed with!) Thanks for the comment - and take care.
@markjohnson42172 жыл бұрын
@@philfoster8789 I did mean that comment to be somewhat ironic... but also with some truth...I agree that the over-production , the automation, the 'freeze-dried poodle turd' effect of voices being squashed into nice neat little autotuned pellets, and the general descent into fast cheap and disposable pop songs is infinitely annoying.. But I HAVE noticed that many contemporary female vocalists have somehow 'inherited' those Kate-like tonal areas, the diction and inflections that punctuate her phrasing, etc. Florence and the Machine are wonderful, but by no means is she the only recent protege.
@philfoster87892 жыл бұрын

Having lost people in my life the last bit where everything comes together.. The lyrics.. The visuals the spinning. The humanity in it... Wow.. Could not stop crying.. The line. Give these moments back to those who will survive.... a gift from time xx beautiful n powerful reaction. Subscribed. She also reprised and reworked this song later in The Directors Cut album. Thank you for reacting to this amazingly talented artist. I'm a few years younger than Kate and I remember well the years she was on top of the charts with her songs, she sounded so different from tipical 80s music just as she sound different today, to me her music is timeless with such a magical flavour never sounding dated even after 40 years. Not only she has a soprano voice range with beautiful timbre she is also a pretty skilled singer and amazing songwriter, she used to create her music mainly with the Fairlight and liked to experiment a lot. In the 80s music video were pretty basic but everything you see in hers comes from her creativity. She studied interpretive dance and anything she does while performing has a specific meaning. Her lyrics are also deep and often about unusual topics even at young age (her breakthrough single "Wuthering Heights" when she wasn't yet 20yo was about the 1847 novel by Emily Bronte of the same title is told from such unique angle). My suggestion is that you check her single "This woman's work" .

Very enjoyable reaction, Kate's been the soundtrack to my life, it's always warming to see someone else discover what they've been missing. The confusing start to that video makes a little more sense if seen within the full mini-movie (though not a lot more sense), that's the standout part from the movie. This is one of my all-time favourite Kate Bush songs, and there's a lot to love! Another, which I recommend to you for reaction is the title track from her first album The Kick Inside. It's the last song on the album and possibly one of the most profound endings to an album in pop history. The way it lingers ....
@MrDiddyDee2 жыл бұрын
The guy she mentions at the lift wasn't Alan Murphy the guitarist, it was the elderly Michael Powell, director of the film 'The red shoes' who gets another mention in the ending in the list of departed friends and family. The spoken intro is inspired by the classic 1948 film, which is about a troubled ballerina torn between love and ambition, either driven mentally ill, or even possessed by her ballet shoes, depending on your view. The film was in turn inspired by an extremely macabre 1845 fairy tale by Hans Christian Anderson. This spoken section isn't really part of the song but a segue in a long form video of songs selected from her album 'The red shoes'. Kate has often taken inspiration for her songs from characters in film and literature, starting with her very first break through hit 'Wuthering Heights' when she was just 18.

"The Red Shoes" album was perhaps her most personal album, in that a number of songs (including this one) were inspired by her own experiences and in this case people she knew, but had departed. This was because Kate's personal life she was hit by a number of significant blows, her mother's terminal illness and her break up with her very long term partner. Normally, when Kate sibgs she's playing a character telling a story that isn't related to herself. The music videos for this album were part of a short 50 minute film directed by Kate, called "The Line, The Cross and the curve" which Kate later described as "a load of bollocks" 😂
