It is really about someone who is in love with someone who is obsessed with something that is pretty futile. They can't get the person to accept the fact that it is a futile obsession. To put it into a sort of story form: he became a matador, and got gored so badly that he couldn't carry on. But at night he climbs out of the window and runs off to a bullring, when there is no-one there, and he fights a bull that doesn't exist." - (Kate Bush Club newsletter, 1983)
'Tamlain' who is referred to in the song is a girl in a traditional fairy story, who is locked up in an ivory tower.
This song was originally released on the B-side of Kate's single Breathing.

This fan video is just fantastic, masterful. The best one I've ever seen. Congratulations for being so talented and sensitive. It's also one of my favourite songs by Kate Bush allthough it was just used as a B-Side. But the lyrics are powerful and tragic and her vocals fantastic. Kate Bush and her piano, what else? I really love this song so I might do a cover on my channel! Only thing is I can't play any instruments so it would have to be acappella so to speak..or sing as the case may be. Also I only have two subscribers atm! My parents bless them! Well Merry Christmas to all the world.
