NOTE: Writing from the perspective as a 20+ year Basketball Coach who is a Shooting Specialist Coach. There is something about Kate Martin that draws you in for sure. Obviously how she got to the League at Draft Night, her overall story as "The Glue" on the feel-good Iowa Hawkeye team, her all-around game as a 2-way player and her versatility to guard 1-4, her incredibly high IQ, her 100%+ hustle, desire, & grit, and her incredible shooting fundamentals to her shot form, flow, & touch....even now seeing her courageouly shoot her "Luka" fadeaway last night versus the Sparks. But it also seems to be more than that. There is something about her PRESENCE. And I think the Aces Stars and Vets and Coach Hammon find "It" comforting and have embraced "It" quickly. Kate also embodies a lot of Coach Hammond's personal story in how she got into the League utilizing these types of qualities of hard work, intelligence, skill, leadership, and grit to become a household name and now the greatest Women's Coach in the Game. Almost as if Kate would be the perfect "Mom to Daughter Clone" if Coach Hammond would have picked the qualities of her daughter in the Game. Feels very nurturing and symbiotic on both sides. Once again....draws me back to Presence. There's no doubt that Becky's belief in Kate has now solidified her in the Game for the rest of her career and for her eventual post-coaching career. It's amazing how one woman's original belief in her as a WNBA player....when others doubted....was all it took for Kate's Presence to Rise & Shine. I give a lot of props to Coach Hammond. Sometimes in life to get your big break....it takes just one person in an influential position to believe in you to make it happen....which then opens the door for many more believers to come. Let Kate's inspiring story be a reminder to us all when in pursuit of our dreams why it's important to keep going.... Additionally, strategically, she really fits well with A'ja Wilson. Best post entry passer (especially the wrap around bounce pass) in terms of angles to Wilson that I have seen. This is being validated by the Aces Superstar in how active she is trying to get Kate involved in the game....being a willing passer to her and screen and role when needed. So big props to A'ja as the leader of the team developing this relationship on and off the court. 🌟 And obviously she has gained the confidence in Coach Hammond a long time ago....but to see her assigned taking the ball out of bounds typically is a huge sign of reliance for a Coach of someone that understands the full flow of out of bounds sets. They are even giving her the opportunity and confidence to take the ball up the court which is now increasing her confidence to distribute, play make, and drive to the hole to score. All huge positives for Kate's rising future on the best team in Women's Basketball. ↗️ As a fan....I've never held on to a player's every shot like I do Kate's....hoping everyone of them go in. Maybe it's because she has great form, flow, and touch....or maybe....as I've said before....it's her beautiful feel-good story and Presence....or as Michael Jordan refers in the Gatorade commercial as the "It". Go Kate "Money Martin". Coach even gave her a cool nickname.... Written by Coach Ryan Hunter - A World Leader in Shooting % Accuracy and Swish % Accuracy on the SIQ Smart Basketball App ("Coach Hunter 23" on the SIQ App) P.S. Any young aspiring shooter needs to purchase the SIQ Smart Basketball with Sensor in it to track all your shooting analytics. It is incredible. A total game changer and you can now compete globally with other shooters through the SIQ App. (www.siqbasketball.com) I'm not even affiliated with the company....just felt compelled to speak up for the betterment of the Game. Maybe this might reach someone out there. We are all in this Game of Life together! ✨️

When I first tuned into the Hawkeyes to watch Caitlin Clark, I happened to find myself smitten with Kate Martin l and her game. Everyone was saying that Caitlin Clark had no wnba level teammates, and I kept finding myself saying "can someone explain to me why a player like Kate Martin wouldn't be a valuable asset in the pros?" I have been unapologetic in extolling her virtues and will confidently admit I have the biggest basketball crush on her. The defensive versatility and energy, the IQ, the spot up shooting, her ability to make reads when needed and cut at the right times, her ability to go get a bucket for herself when absolutely necessary. When you're looking to build a basketball team for winning, ideally you'd have two or three Kate Martin's on the roster. She's the perfect 3 and D modern wing that will fit in on any team. I have been SO HAPPY to see my initial gut impressions of her so vindicated by her performance as a rookie. I just KNEW I wasn't being sentimental when I would say "why doesn't Kate Martin go to the wnba? Everyone thinks she's just gonna go into coaching, but her size and skill set has gotta be valuable in the pros." And her teammates all ADORE her, too. Kate Martin's archetype has basically ALWAYS been successful at every level of the game. So I'm very excited to see how her career plays out

Sounds like we are both on the same page with our intuitive perception of Kate. 😊 Enjoyed reading your insights. Very well written and thought invoking. Couldn't have agreed more on many points....especially the part of being a successful archetype in almost any example in sport and life. Enjoyed the read. Thank you!

@@ryhunter23 likewise. I'm always going to be excited for some healthy and thoughtful discourse. I was even trying to come up with a player comparison, but the fact is, there's been so many successful players in both leagues with this skill set and relative build that it was hard for me to even pin one down! Which is not to say she's run of the mill. Most every team focused on winning wants to have multiple players on the roster with her exact skill set. Which is why I found it so confusing when she didn't pick up much draft buzz. I was like, "come on, this is an experienced, high level 3 and D wing with high IQ and tons of intangibles! If this were a 28 year old free agent with this composition she'd be a hot commodity!"

@@greyklopstock7155 Found it interesting that Kate was 12th overall in the initial voting for the All-Star Game. I'm sure that is a huge contingency from Iowa Hawkeye loyalists (as Caitlin is #2 right now behind A'ja Wilson)....but I'm sure she gained additional admirers along the way that enjoy her game and what she represents that is right about sport. My only concern now is with the additional pickups of Tiffany Hayes and the return of Chelsea Gray....that she is not going to get as many reps. I trust Coach Hammond more than any other coach that she knows what she is doing....but now she has a lot of players to navigate. I felt Kate really fits well when A'ja Wislon is in the game because their is no confusion of blurred lines with roles. Kate was good at setting up those post entry bounce passes at angles Wilson could be successful with. For example, I know it was the Sparks...but the one and only game she started she did well....especially in the first half not missing a shot and knocking down 3 3-pointers. So it's difficult seeing her play less minutes now....especially since the pickup of Hayes. Don't feel she is getting into the 'Flow' of the game as much now....which puts more internal pressure on her to not miss a shot, dribble drive, and/or her defensive assignments. She showed a lot of potential when there were less players in the rotation. I've always felt she was a calming influence with the Stars because the Stars immediately know with Kate she is only there to compliment their games....not compete for reps. So I hope things work out in the long-run. It's an invaluable experience for her either way to experience and pick the minds of the best team and coach in the Game. Just hope she gets enough regular minutes to keep improving through being apart of the 'Flow' of the Game. There's an old wisdom that may run true in this situation...."Less is More". Hopefully at a minimum Coach Hammond will give her more minutes to learn in the lower tier teams of the league. That would be nice. But no matter what....it is still a great situation for Kate to be in and learn from Alysha Clark....I think she is an awesome mentor for Kate, a true team player, and highly intelligent. So she is in good hands. 👍

I'd rather watch Kate Martin score 13 points, than someone like Arike score 40. Likability plays a huge factor. People like wholesome people.
