I think she was looking sad because of what Kate's dad said about wanting to be there for his kids, and she doesn't have that relationship with her parents anymore.

Yes but not everyone knows all the spoilers so they won't always make it obvious in order for it to be a surprise. Another good example is Aidan. The actor is leaving, his last scene will be in a few weeks but unless you knew that or spoilers you wouldn't necessarily know by just watching the show. Also, they film 6-8 weeks in advance, these things take time :)
