I genuinely appreciate your Murakami related videos. Your comments on each book exhibits your deep grasp on his world. As a Japanese. I would love to dig into the things that have frequent mentions in Murakami’s books, a well, goats, Soviet Union, as such…

1Q84 and hard-boiled wonderland and the end of the world are S tier for me. For me these are his most complex works and I feel that when he delves into the more speculative side of writing he does his best work and !Q*$ and hard-boiled have the perfect balance of fantastical and speculative

1Q84 and wind-up bird chronicles for the win. Even I would put them into S tier along with HBWTEW. I really wish more people would pick up 1Q84 instead of Norwegian woods...

I'm glad you enjoyed 1q84. I have read all of his works in the past year since quarantine, but this was BY FAR my least favorite. I don't think I've ever had so much repetition in a single novel, with such bland and static characters. Maybe the fact the unyielding plot never gave any significant answers wouldn't have bothered me in a 400-page novel, but being close to 1000, it kind of destroyed my mind. I felt like i was rotting by the end of it. Tengo made things especially difficult. He was even more frustrating than Kafka, even though I still love that book. I was very disappointed that no answers were given about the little people, the cult, air chrysalis, and more. I can't believe that pretty much no action occurred in the third book, except the murder of the Ushikawa character which was completely uncalled for. The best part of the book was the conversation that green peas had with the leader. Definitely weaker than Colorless Tsukuro and Norwegian wood imo. Bringing those up because it seems that you didn't enjoy them as much.

It’s not a classic, but for a change of pace I would recommend “Underground: The Tokyo Gas Attack and the Japanese Psyche” which is a collection of interviews conducted by Murakami with survivors of the Sarin gas attack on the Japanese subway, he also interviews members of the Aum Shinrikyo cult that carried out the attack. That book never gets any love, but it’s worth checking out.

i know that you're prioritizing to reread kafka on the shore over dance dance dance upon this marathon, but honestly i would like to see if your perception has changed on dance dance dance! it's been sooo long since your review on that. i've read a wild sheep chase a couple of months ago. i'm still very undecided whether i'd like to 'continue' the following story of the rat series or not 😬

I appreciate all the fans of HM. I’ve read him from when hard boiled 1sr came out and it’s a S. And don’t care about the whiners -Killing Commendatore is also S it was a return to form from the D Colorless and C 1Q84 and that’s a gift to me it’s also a D don’t understand except maybe people like to say that they’ve read this over blown way way way……..way too long novel. In fact not gonna hold punches 1Q84 is the worst and a lousy book.

1Q84 absolutely floored me when I read it years ago. Killing Commendatore feels very 'fan service' which I'm not complaining at all, it has all the classic Murakami quirks. I might need to give After Dark another try, I was really bored by it during my first read.

Hi Kate. Just finished reading Sputnik Sweetheart and I really think you should reconsider this book. That you don’t like it can mean one of these two things, in my opinion: 1. The English translation sucks, 2. You didn’t get the beauty of it. Okay let’s add a third: I’m insane and don’t know what I’m talking about. Either way, I think you should reconsider.

@@murakamireads not angry I hope? In general I agree with your taste in books so this one surprises me. There might be something wrong with the English translation (I read it in Dutch and thought this book has beautiful written sentences). Or perhaps you should read the book once more and reconsider, as you did on numerous other occasions. Or indeed we just think differently about this book. Anyway, keep up the good work and of course I don’t want you to change your mind just because I said so. Hell no!!
