This is so beautiful, it's so strange when I hear this song all I can think of is when I truly felt at "home" and that was wherever my grandma was. She was my mother, my everything, and it day doesn't go by that I don't think of her. Miss you and love you so much grandma

Beautiful voice and lovely harp! Your rendition is perfect for this very old song written in October, 1822 by John Howard Payne, on a dreary day ( outside). John Payne was born in New York City on June 9, 1792. He eventually became an actor. He also wrote for NY papers and journals. After he had quit acting, but was still writing he featured "Home Sweet Home" in a play he wrote or adapted. After it was sung by Miss Ann Marie Tree, at Covent Gardens, in an operatic drama in 1823, it became the most popular song of that time. The tune came from what a British man, Sir Henry Bishop, wrote and labelled as a Sicilian National Melody because if was for that 1823 operatic drama called "Clari, the Maid of Milan". Clearly, Payne loved his home, his mother and the peace and security it represented - it has 3 stanzas but only the first and third are usually sung.

My grandmother was born in the late 1880s. I remember her in the 1960s, sitting in her own home, embroidering linens and singing this song. Your version is true to the spirit of that memory. Thank you.

This was posted right before I went home for Fall Break in my first year of college. I was feeling scared of being in a new place, overwhelmed with homework, and more than a little homesick. This gave me hope while waiting for those long days to pass before I could see my parents again. Five years later, this is still one of my favorites ever of your songs or covers.

Thank you so much! This makes me think of my childhood. My parents are moving to another state and it will be the very first time I spend the holidays without them close by. Even though I am married, have kids of my own, a home of my own. This song reminds of my first true home with my parents. There were sometimes tears, sometimes anger, but most of it was filled with laughter. Thank you for reminding me of that.

Dearest Kate, you have once again stolen my heart. Home Sweet Home is sung with exquisite delicacy and beauty. The arrangement is simple, almost sparse, with the alto recorder taking the solo in the middle verse. This gorgeous song takes me to that "thin place" where I am reminded of things divine. Wonderful work Kate!!!!!!

I fell in love with this song when I first heard it in a 1956 Japanese movie titled "The Burmese Harp". The movie is very beautiful and the song is sang in Japanese of course. I used to play the tune on my harmonica when I was young. For many years I was convinced that it was a Japanese song. I would have liked to find the English version but I didn't know the title, until I finally heard it, almost by chance, sang by the great opera soprano, Dame Joan Sutherland, on a video of her farewell performance. It made me very happy to finally find its original title and lyrics and learn about its history. Since then I have heard it sang by a few other opera singers. I like them all, but I also like very much this rendition.

Truly, Miss Kate, yours is a voice that is God-given. The arrangement of the song may be a bit "plain", as you say, but that doesn't matter in the least as long as your amazing instrumental and voice talents are involved. December 31st of 1862 two armies met on the banks of Stones River in Middle Tennessee. They had already fought a hard and costly battle that day and settled in for a cold night. The bands played various tunes for either side then late into evening one of the Union bands began this gentle tune. Other regimental bands joined and soon bands on both sides of the river were playing Home Sweet Home. Men on both sides were singing, humming and weeping. No other songs played that night. Afterwards Commanders on both sides deemed it too forlorn to be played in their camps again. They feared the longing pull for home might cause their armies to dissolve. Oh that it had! This song truly does make the heart ache for home, peace and loved ones.
