I love Greece and its folklore. There are 3 greek restaurants in my hometown with greek kithen staff, waiters from Crete and Pireus, Athens and Saloniki. Greek meals are delicious, phantastic. We spend centuries together under three empires (Roman, Byzantine & Ottoman) that's why we have common songs and dances. BUT... The roots of Kalamatianos can be found in antiquity. Homer, in the Iliad, describes three performances made around the spear of Achilles that depict a dance in an open circle. The ancient Spartans had a dance called ορμος hormos, which was a syrto style dance described in detail by Xenophon where a woman led a male into dance using a handkerchief. Lucian states that the ormos dance was performed in an open circle and was done by young men and women.

I agree with the first idea where your say that we have much in common but the antiquity theory is nonsense. Basically everything somehow comes from antiquity but not particular dances or songs or pieces of music. The Kallamatianos is just a plain Albanian folk dance similar to other Albanian dances. There is nothing more to it. No special meaning, no super ancient tradition, no oracles and fairies, just a folk dance for people to celebrate the good things in life.

This rhythm and dance (7/8) is common in Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania, even in Turkey. We should all be glad that many traditions of the entire area are influences of the countries surrounding each other. Music has no borders my friend...

Using the word "Balkan" is like throwing more "fuel into the fire !" The dance is Ancient Greek in origin, but today goes by the name of "Kalamatianos", as it originates in the City of Kalamata but is danced in ALL OF GREECE. And I have not seen any other Balkan country dancing this dance.
