@@leoslewis6899 there’s a funny story where Katharine Hepburn and Lauren Bacall were both up for the tony award for best actress the same year. Streep hadn't done many foreign-tongue roles at this point. Isn't French Lieutenant her first "accented" performance on screen? Hepburn deserved to win the Oscar only for Alice Adams in 1935 (she lost to Bette Davis for Dangerous) and for The Lion in Winter in 1968. Her wins in 1967 and in 1981 should have gone to Faye Dunaway for Bonnie and Clyde and Meryl Streep for The French Lieutenant's Woman respectively.
@juancarlosucedaperez38155 жыл бұрын
No way. Faye Dunaway's performance was not as subtle as Hepburn's performance (Christina Drayton)... there were moments that I noticed that she didn't get along with Beatty... although she was natural. Hepburn was able to balance a wide range of emotions and her movements were unique (see the scene of Christina and Hilary). Hepburn was so natural and amazing in On Golden Pond, she wrote her own script in some scenes, along with Fonda, and the scene of My Knight in shining armor with Fonda was the key to show the perfect mix of optimism, encouragement, nostalgia, happiness and love... of course there's no doubt that she really felt all of these emotions since she remembered Tracy's death. Streep was good but her acting was not very complex... only her accent that she added to the character but this doesn't help much to the performance... these aspects only supports the character she portrayed.
@juancarlosucedaperez38155 жыл бұрын
Yes. She deserved her Academy Award for Best Actress in 1936 for Alice Adams. She gave the best performance of that year. The Great Kate won 4 Oscars, but none of them were for her greatest performances. Her win for 1967's "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" is probably the weakest acting award in the Academy Awards' history. @jerm1810 I agree with you. Calling Hepburn an old bat means this guy knows nothing about movies and has no respect for greatness. It is also a known fact that Katherine Hepburn never attended any oscars even though she was nominated 12 times. Her only appearance in an oscar was to present a special award for one of her friends.

Hepburn's film canon is so astonishing and rich that it seems almost inevitable that she would have captured a handful of Oscars almost incidentally. But I think it is especially important to note that she worked largely in a time when there were far more great roles for women and, frankly, far more great actresses than in the last 40 or so years. That's what really gilds her achievement to my mind. There were many years during Hepburn's career where every nominee who lost the best actress award was more deserving than most of the women who have won during the Streep era.

Isabelle Adjani should have won for Possession, shame that she wasn't even nominated.

The one and only year the two most nominated actresses in the history of the Academy Awards were competing to each other. Hepburn at the end of her great career; and Streep very young and already in her third nomination (and one previous Oscar win)

@Robert Anthony Yeadon so did Hepburn... if she didn't retire probably be more Oscars

This is a strange one. Hepburn let her great cheekbones do most of the acting in "On Golden Pond". The role doesn't stretch her at all. Streep, Keaton, and Sarandon all had far more challenging roles. As did Marilia Pera in "Pixote", Kathleen Turner in "Body Heat", Sissy Spacek in "Raggedy Man", or even Faye Dunaway in "Mommie Dearest". This is emphatically NOT among Hepburn's best work.

I agree, Peter's performance is so underrated, she should've won.

Katharine Hepburn is definitely one of the best, with Bette Davis, jane Fonda, Sissy Spacek, Meryl Streep, Julianne Moore, and Susan Sarandon.
