@@leoslewis6899 there’s a funny story where Katharine Hepburn and Lauren Bacall were both up for the tony award for best actress the same year. Lauren said that Kate called her and said something to the effect of “hello Lauren, I can’t make it to the awards, so when I win will you accept for me?” Lauren was baffled, but said yes, okay. Lauren won the award, and Kate sent her a framed portrait of herself with a really beautiful letter telling her how much she deserved it and how wonderful she was. I think Katharine just liked to goad her coworkers/colleagues a bit for fun 😂 Source: Lauren Bacall interview Edit: the framed photo was of Katharine, and the letter was Kate saying how wonderful Lauren was in her role

yes, most film historians consider some of the biggest Oscar blunders to be: Katherine Hepburn's performance in Guesswho's coming to dinner win over either AnneBancroft in The Graduate or Audrey Hepburn in Wait until Dark and then in the supporting category in 1970 Helen Hayes winning for Airport over Karen Black in Five Easy Pieces and more recently Marrion Cottilard's dubbed &hammy performance win over the sublime critically acclaimed Julie Christe performance in AwayfromHer in 2007.

Streep hadn't done many foreign-tongue roles at this point. Isn't French Lieutenant her first "accented" performance on screen? Other than the TV miniseries Holocaust, I don't think she had any notable accented roles yet. I think her loss was more that people weren't entirely enthused with the performance. Hepburn was an icon by 1982. Plus, she deserved it.

Hepburn deserved to win the Oscar only for Alice Adams in 1935 (she lost to Bette Davis for Dangerous) and for The Lion in Winter in 1968. Her wins in 1967 and in 1981 should have gone to Faye Dunaway for Bonnie and Clyde and Meryl Streep for The French Lieutenant's Woman respectively.
@juancarlosucedaperez3815
@juancarlosucedaperez3815 5 жыл бұрын
No way. Faye Dunaway's performance was not as subtle as Hepburn's performance (Christina Drayton)... there were moments that I noticed that she didn't get along with Beatty... although she was natural. Hepburn was able to balance a wide range of emotions and her movements were unique (see the scene of Christina and Hilary). Hepburn was so natural and amazing in On Golden Pond, she wrote her own script in some scenes, along with Fonda, and the scene of My Knight in shining armor with Fonda was the key to show the perfect mix of optimism, encouragement, nostalgia, happiness and love... of course there's no doubt that she really felt all of these emotions since she remembered Tracy's death. Streep was good but her acting was not very complex... only her accent that she added to the character but this doesn't help much to the performance... these aspects only supports the character she portrayed.

Yes. She deserved her Academy Award for Best Actress in 1936 for Alice Adams. She gave the best performance of that year. The Great Kate won 4 Oscars, but none of them were for her greatest performances. Her win for 1967's "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" is probably the weakest acting award in the Academy Awards' history. Her non Oscar winning performance in 1962's "Long Day's Journey Into Night" is one of the greatest ever filmed. That's the way the Oscar crumbles.

since Kate had 3 Oscars going into the night- I hardly see the need for the Academy to think she needed this as an honorary gesture as mentioned below...they felt she deserved it- those who voted for her...Streep had just won 2 years before, Susan was still bldg and largely unknown- people thought Rocky Horror when they thought of her back then....

@@reasonrestored9116 and she lost 1 because they were making it up to Bette Davis (they used to release vote totals and she was 2nd to Davis in 1935...Davis was snubbed the year before and was given it the following year- even Davis said Hepburn deserved it that year)...67 was a weak year- yes- Dunaway probably deserved it, but she was too new, Bancroft was in more of a supporting role.

It's Jon Voight. He was in some big movies in the 60's & 70's. Probably his most famous are MIDNIGHT COWBOY, DELIVERANCE, & COMING HOME (for which he won a Best Actor Oscar for). Plus a ton of other movies & TV shows not as well known.

this was such a shock result at the time that even the director had no idea what shot to cut to !! Classic example of older academy voters being unable to chose between two clear front runners - Streep and Keaton - so opting for a compromise choice.

The reason that Katharine Hepburn never showed up to pick up her 4 Oscars..according to HER...in a couple of interviews...including Dick Cavette...She was nervous and thought she would lose each time. But remember kiddies...Ms. Hepburn...like her own life and being the greatest Actress ever...she just did her things her way.

@jerm1810 I agree with you. Calling Hepburn an old bat means this guy knows nothing about movies and has no respect for greatness. It is also a known fact that Katherine Hepburn never attended any oscars even though she was nominated 12 times. Her only appearance in an oscar was to present a special award for one of her friends.

Hepburn's film canon is so astonishing and rich that it seems almost inevitable that she would have captured a handful of Oscars almost incidentally. But I think it is especially important to note that she worked largely in a time when there were far more great roles for women and, frankly, far more great actresses than in the last 40 or so years. That's what really gilds her achievement to my mind. There were many years during Hepburn's career where every nominee who lost the best actress award was more deserving than most of the women who have won during the Streep era.

This is a strange one. Hepburn let her great cheekbones do most of the acting in "On Golden Pond". The role doesn't stretch her at all. Streep, Keaton, and Sarandon all had far more challenging roles. As did Marilia Pera in "Pixote", Kathleen Turner in "Body Heat", Sissy Spacek in "Raggedy Man", or even Faye Dunaway in "Mommie Dearest". This is emphatically NOT among Hepburn's best work.
