Elena was heather, she was perfect, she had friends who loved her, two men constantly protecting her and she was also always really nice. People are jealous. I like Katherine more too, and honestly a big reason I don't like Elena much is because I feel she always has things handed to her (even though it's not her fault😂😂)

Julie Plec ( the director of the show ) said multiple times that Elena, Stefan , and Damon were the main characters of the story , since they were the original love triangle. Katherine's ability to sustain is what we call survival of the fittest. She was doing what our basic human instincts demand, i.e to survive & self preserve. And the fact that she did it for 500 years, including her never ending run from an immortal hybrid without anyone to have her back & support her only solidifies her strength of character. And she did all this without turning her humanity off. She was doing what everyone would do, if the situation demands. If Elena had no one to look after her, she also would have turned just like her had the circumstances been similar.
