Kathleen Belew - White Power and Paramilitary America - 09/21/19

Kathleen Belew is Assistant Professor of History at the University of Chicago where her teaching and research focus on militarization, violence, racism, and identity in 20th-century America. Her recent book, Bring the War Home, explores white power activism from its roots in the Vietnam War to its collaboration with neo-Naxi, Ku Klux Klan, skinhead, and militia movements. She has been featured on Fresh Air, Weekend Edition, CBS, and the Frontline program Documenting Hate. A graduate of the University of Washington with a degree in the history of ideas, she earned an MPhil and PhD in American studies from Yale University. She is currently a research fellow at the Center for the Advanced Study of the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University.

Good lecture but lousy questions. Very easy leading questions like "Are you confident our democracy will surive attacks like these?". Of course she will give a hopeful answer any other answer would be disasterous.

Very interesting to listen to this in October of 2020. It really highlights the trajectory of the current rise again of various fringe white power movement's along with the increase in actual and threatened violence perpetrated by them over the past year. Exacerbated and compounded no doubt by poor media coverage/framing as the country entered a particularly contentious election year marked by a marked pushback against these fringe groups and their ideologies by many progressive movements that are confronting police violence, legal inequities, rising poverty rates, etc. And then, on top of it all, the country is experiencing a global disease pandemic infecting 7 million and killing 211,000 in the US alone, to date, and the concurrent economic collapse costing tens of millions of jobs, largely due to the utterly in competent federal response by both by the Trump administration and the GOP controlled Senate, particularly Mitch McConnell. They chose to watch the country burn and fomented violence by these fringe groups rather than deal with the reality of twin emergencies.

The statistics you site I bothered to read are a weak attempt to imply that because blacks are also violent, white power movements don't exist. Very poor logic. Hit the history books you are seriously deficient in knowledge

The data you site can be simply explained ..violence is not based on color, and I would also presume to say that the black violence data you site is not a coordinated syndicate of hate, but actually large impart a disenfranchised portion of our white privilege society.. As a UChicago alum, I am incredibly sad that this far left race baiter Belew is a professor at my university. She constantly pushes this myth that a wide swath of white Americans are white supremacists, all while ignoring decades of crime dta and ignoring the dozens of weekly shootings in her own city of Chicago that don't fit the demographic narrative that she is pushing.
