I still do the same and have for each of our four. Sang it to my youngest tonight and she always asks for “the drizzle of the rain”. I said the song was actually called Kathy’s Song and she asked why and I looked it up and we watched this together for a little while. And then she flattered me asking me to sing it instead. No I’m no Garfunkel but she’s used to me.

What an outstanding classic love song we have here. Not just a love song, but one with true literary merit and written in a way that all artists do when the thoughts of love can distract them from the work at hand . Paul Simon says loving is easy, that it's life and the struggle to make a living that are tough . I don't know about that .The jury's out on that one.

There's a lot of turmoil in my life as a child. These people that my parents knew were always with them but we were always with our parents so we experienced it whether we like it or not. I think you must live a very sheltered musical life. Paul Simon is a good guitar player but the people he learned from, many of which are from England and during the time when they wrote this song about busking in England and playing folk clubs. Artists such as Davey Graham, Bert Jansch, John Renbourn, Martin Carthy, Wizz Jones, Ralph McTell and many more, all had a massive influence on Paul, and he learned many of his songs from them. Scarborough Fair being just one example. All of the artists I mentioned are amazing guitarists, and better technically than Paul Simon.

I first heard this song when I was 16 yrs old, in 1969 (choke). This song is superlatively well-crafted to be both baldly honest/simple and deeply resonant/complex. The lyric is one quatrain after another, with no "verse-chorus-verse," or even a refrain, like "The Sound of Silence." This is a wonderful paradox: so baldly simple and yet so deeply complex. I loved it in 1969, and I love it now. And wow, isn't Art Garfunkle an absolutely angelic singer!

I hear the drizzle of the rain Like a memory it falls Soft and warm continuing Tapping on my roof and walls And from the shelter of my mind Through the window of my eyes I gaze beyond the rain-drenched streets To England where my heart lies My mind's distracted and diffused My thoughts are many miles away They lie with you when you're asleep And kiss you when you start your day And a song I was writing is left undone I don't know why I spend my time Writing songs I can't believe With words that tear and strain to rhyme And so you see I have come to doubt All that I once held as true I stand alone without beliefs The only truth I know is you And as I watch the drops of rain Weave their weary paths and die I know that I am like the rain There but for the grace of you go I
