Im lost. I need someone smarter than me to explain the housing market up there. Since the riots have started in the greater portland area. Home prices are jumping from 3.6 to 6 % per month for the last few months. On a house this cost, that is 210 to half a million increase in 3 months. Knowing no one in their right mind would buy into a city thats an active warzone. Im trying to figure who is artificially inflating the market. The brokers?

Hi Mike, These are great questions. The protesting and riots are only happening in downtown Portland within a small area. The market statistics include a much wider area expanding to many suburban and even rural areas. Portland Metro includes other towns/cities such as Lake Oswego, West Linn, Beaverton, etc. Just the 'city of Portland' statistics is still a broader area than just the downtown city area. There are many micro-markets throughout Portland that perform drastically different from another. As a whole, the real estate market is very strong. The combinations of work-from-home, historically low interest rates, and low housing inventory with high buyer demands are keeping the housing markets strong. It's cheaper to buy than rent in many areas. We are seeing more buyers from California than ever since people can work from home full-time, they are cutting living expenses and can get much more for their home here than most major cities on the West Coast. Also the constant fires and droughts continue pushing people to move north.
