When hooving a layout, cover the nozzle with a ladies stocking! It still sucks up the grass/dirt but it keeps all the particles in the stocking which makes it easier to put back for reusing as well as not having to deep clean out the hoover as often. Not sure if it will work with the fine snow powder but its a life saver for grass and dirt!!!
@KathyMillatt
@KathyMillatt 5 жыл бұрын
I have my own little hoover for scenery but use tights over my big hoover nozzle if that’s what I have to hand. I’m not sure about the really fine snow powder either but I guess it would pick up most of it.

Again, thank you for doing all these experiments. Some of the Noch products are definitely interesting. Are you planning to do a final comparison with art supplies like acrylic gel, acrylic and spray paints? I would be really interested to see how these specialized products fare against the art products given all these are some way or the other variations of common art supplies.
@KathyMillatt
@KathyMillatt 5 жыл бұрын
I tried some art supplies but didn’t really get much traction. I do use some ordinary products such as baking soda in later videos.

Good stuff. I think the paste is more for building up deep snow drifts than for putting snow cover on foliage. It’s meant to be put on thick and built up. For the past episodes over the recent months I’ve noticed the audio from your lav mic (I assume) is really muddy sounding like all the high end is clipped. Is the mic or transmitter gone bad?
@KathyMillatt
@KathyMillatt 5 жыл бұрын
It’s not showing as clipped on my audio tracks. Hmm. Not sure. It did knock the auto adjust on for a while which caused some headaches but it’s all sorted now.
@ardnutcouk

@@KathyMillatt The straight to camera bits (assuming using the lav mic) all sound like it's being recorded at a way lower bit rate than the voice overs on the rest of the video (which sound good).
@KathyMillatt
@KathyMillatt 5 жыл бұрын
Interesting, I'm using a Zoom H1 and I don't think I can change the settings when I record although I do choose the speed when I plug it in as an extra mic to the Mac. It's the same mic so I'll ask Professor Google whether he knows the answer.
@ardnutcouk
@ardnutcouk 5 жыл бұрын
@@KathyMillatt As a test you could try playing back the recorded files directly on the Zoom and see if they sound good or not. If they're ok, then I would assume the problem lies somewhere in your video editing software, in how it's importing or converting those audio files.

Your channel is so useful. I've just binged all your snow vids. I'm getting back into miniatures after a long hiatus and I'm wanting to base some in such a way that they match a gaming mat I have on order. The snow on the artwork looks more powdery than anything. Would the Noch powdered snow pair well with some PVA to make it permanent? Subbed btw!
@KathyMillatt
@KathyMillatt 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the sub. The Noch powdery snow would be a great choice and PVA should work well with it. If you need more depth, experiment with hair spray to hold a second layer.

Hi, Kathy. Really nice video and very well presented. I know it's not really proper to this video but do you know, or have you posted a previous video, on how to make your own pigment fixer? The commercial products are so expensive especially when I am building large dioramas (my latest WIP is over 1.5mts in length). Cheers, Pete
@KathyMillatt
@KathyMillatt 5 жыл бұрын
Pete, I usually just use isopropyl alcohol to fix but it depends how much you are going to handle the model. That’s not enough for model railway rolling stock.

Hi, I found this video really interesting as I am trying to choose a snow to base all my models with so thank you. I think the snow powder is by far the best effect for what I'm looking for, would a Pva spray glue be effective in your opinion? Thanks.
@KathyMillatt

I use PVA for most things and it would work well here. Shake off any excess snow and you will know the snow is properly glued.

Hair Spray - please can you advise on what it says on the rear label? I ask as I was undecided looking at three types in Yorkshire Trading Company last week. 1) Firm Hold 2) Extra firm Hold 3) Quick spray. The thing that made me undecided was that, on the rear label, they all said “no sticky residue” - but isn’t that what we want?! I just wondered what “style” your T***o hairspray is, and if it’s a sticky one?!
@KathyMillatt
@KathyMillatt 5 жыл бұрын
I just buy whatever’s available in the highest sounding hold I can get. I’m not sure what the sticky residue is but I guess it means no tackiness afterwards and we do want it to dry properly well.
