I used to work for a company that makes heat pumps. Things are going so well that they recently had about 400 redundancies including me. They have nowhere near the demand that they expected.

A few years ago on a new build we were persuaded to fit one of these heat pumps as we were to far from the gas mains, the first winter it failed miserably unable to heat the home, the next summer we installed an oil tank and boiler, as much heat as you want and far cheaper to run.

We also cook on wood and the great things is we have hillsides and hillsides of wood to manage, so it's all rather inexpensive for us. Come join us!!

Meanwhile, in the country of 1.5 billion people with the red flag that we are nopt allowed to mention on youtube. They make everything. Whether it's computers or coal/nuclear power stations or railways or homes. They make everything and they make it fast. Even if CO/CO2 was damaging to the environment (it isn't). Our contribution is insignificant. The sun drives the climate. Always has. Always will. And water vapour is by far the most significant greenhouse gas.

Heat pumps use electricity that during a lot of down days with the wind and sun, the electricity comes from GAS!!!! This is to force us onto electricity, which they want to do that in order to make it easy to enforce rolling blackouts on days Ed Miliband decides we are producing too much carbon. You can't do rolling blackouts with gas, its too dangerous. Now heat pumps are roughly 3 times more efficient than an electric heater, but burning gas to create electricity is about 3 times less efficient than just sending the gas to us in the first place to burn directly for heat in our own homes. So basically a heat pump, on most days, is run from electricity generated by gas, and it uses just as much gas, just its burnt at a power station! This is why gas is generally around 3 times less expensive than electricity per KW hour, and also why you don't save any money on your heating bills switching to heat pumps, as whilst each KW of electricity burnt creates 3 KW of heat, so you get 2KW of heat for free, that one KW of electricity is 3 times more expensive than 1KW of gas. It's also a slow process getting that 2KW worth of free heat from the outside into our homes, and when its cold, that free 2KW of heat is next to impossible to find outside, so they struggle the most, and cost the most to run, when its cold and we want to use them.

I bought a spare gas boiler to cover me when my 3 year old one fails. Should be covered for 15-20 years. I am in the building trade, we have installed heat pumps and solar panels on loads of houses, with disappointing results. Don't heat a house and cost a fortune to run, even with panels.

Talking of heat pumps et al. My rural, elderly French neighbour has a heat pump, not a small thing, so how it’s possible to instal one of these monstrosities in the UK where space is VERY limited, I just don’t know. She also has oil fired central heating, an open fireplace and at least three electric radiators and a paraffin heater all going at the same time in the autum/winter months and beyond …. She can afford it as the French pensions are so much more than the UK. Also watching your video tonight I thought the UK had a massive problem with potholes … the road behind you looks like a war zone! You’re right .. heat pumps will not work in the UK ..

I had a heat pump installed last year in Maine. It heats one 12'X12' room in my cabin to about 62F on days when it's zero F to about 25 F. Warmer outside temps and it can reach about 70 F. Note: Below freezing temps require the heat pump to go into defrost mode several times a day so it doesn't produce heat during those times. Sweaters, toques, and a blanket help a lot during the day. I'm 73 years old. YMMV
@avlisk16 сағат бұрын
I'm currently installing a pellet stove to supplement the heat pump, and provide heat during our many long power outages here in the winter.

I've got a wood burning stove. Heat and the ability to cook on it. Don't need or want another source.... well some electricity is nice for tv, internet etc, but please don't bully me about how or what I should do with my money!
@avlisk16 сағат бұрын
@@astartewise8615 Agree! If I were 30, 20, or even 10 years younger, I would have opted for a wood stove. But a man's got to know his limitations, and I can't handle what it takes to use a wood stove any more at my age an physical condition. I tried propane, but I had leaks that made me really ill the last two winters, so I have up on propane. If you can do wood, do wood!
@astartewise861515 сағат бұрын
@avlisk just to let you know I'm 80 years old but I'm very lucky and as I have people around me who help re chopped wood etc. I do believe we need the community spirit to be alive in all of us again. Sadly in most cities and towns there is no such thing, but here in a rural area of UK there is, and I thank God every day for them 🙏

I have air source heat pump and it's horrible you have to have the immersion on constantly to get any heat in the radiators and using that is running on electric constantly 24/7 and costs a fortune. Ironically the only time it works is in the summer when you don't want it and even uses the immersion heater for the hot water anyway so it costs a fortune not to mention the fan and pump outside constantly running costing even more electric then they have to change every radiator in the property
