Right, she’s obviously an expert flautist and made it sound lovely, but it sounded exhausting to make it sound good. I cannot imagine a 10yo beginner trying to get good tone from that instrument, while learning how to breathe. Reminds me of myself at age 12 trying to get good tone on my middle school’s plywood bass with an insanely heavy plastic bow. to be honest the cheap flute doesn't sound that bad, and I think most people who don't know much about flute wouldn't notice much difference between the cheap one and your muramatsu one, but like I can hear your struggle while you play edit: I've played flute for 6yrs and I know that it takes a lot to make such a cheap instrument sound so good, my english isn't that good so by saying that the cheap flute doesn't sound that bad, I meant that it doesn't sound as bad as I expected when such a good player as her plays it but I don't expect everyone to play so well with the cheap flute
@aprilbennett41615 жыл бұрын
I'm not so sure about that. As a beginner-level flute, yes, it's okay, but the Muramatsu really serves to highlight the pink's failings. She looked like she was physically struggling with the pink flute, and kept running out of air... Never mind a particular note at the 9:52 mark sounding plain horrendous.

@katieflute5 жыл бұрын
hi Julie! Thanks for your comment :) I think that the best way to go is lip stains or tints. I don't normally wear foundation of a daily basis, but I recently switched to Estee Lauder Double Wear and it seems to not transfer much to the lip plate or cause that "flute beard" discoloration on my chin! I linked all my favorite makeup products in my amazon influencer page- www.amazon.com/shop/katieflute?listId=27LAG9HDQ17OW&ref=cm_sw_em_r_inf_list_own_katieflute_dp_bwm4phFqooSh7 and some of my fav lip products are there. The one I'm wearing in the video is the Buxom one. :)
@SolsGarage5 жыл бұрын
Don't wear lipstick while you're playing your instrument, full stop. Even if it doesn't transfer, the oils/chemicals from the product can still tarnish/damage your headjoint.

*Flashbacks in Clarinet* I remember the first time I played flute, it was beginning band in 4th grade, I chose to play flute for the sake of the beauty and blindly did I know I was doomed for I have put myself into the doorsteps of hell... I never even got past the part on how to make a sound much less by the time I was faced with my first pass-off my tears of desperation lifted me away into the sweet release of freedom. Atlast, I returned into the music world and started over as the peak of the woodwind throne: The clarinet. From there, I have managed to create blessings ans beauty at a balance with beautiful sound of a clarinet where I remain grateful to be saved and continuing a new path of Joy. Moral of the story: If it doesn't bring you joy, go back and try the second path.

long comment time!!! this was helpful for me to see if only to remind me that ONE of the reasons I don't sound very good right now as I re-learn flute after a 10 year gap of not playing.. is because of my crappy flute! of course, it helps that you are amazing and a professional musician who clearly has tons of skill, but I can still use this comparison to comfort myself despite us being in totally different "leagues" of playing xD thank you for posting. it helped me!

Can confirm, flute playing involves a lot of hair flipping there’s a flute player with pretty short hair in my band and she still hair flips

You are clearly an excellent player to get that good of a sound out of a student-ish quality flute. But certainly I can tell how much extra work you're having to put in.

That first song brought back memories when I was younger and my sister practicing that song for hours a day. And carnival of Venice brought back memories of me listening to Wynton Marsalis playing it over and over and then attempting and failing on my own trumpet. Good video!

I have a chap $90 flute from amazon and while it helps me with fingering and basics it’s super difficult to get a good sound in the high register and the low register seems to take way too much effort and air as well... my best advice is to save up for a better one than the cheap eBay or amazon ones.
@LaMerleNoir2165 жыл бұрын
I should also add it’s an open hole flute so it’s helping me with correct hand posture. So they do have some uses but still. It’s a pain in the rear to work with tone or even harmonics.

You can play like an angel. Like literally so soft and beautiful. I play flute now for 3 years and I'm so bad😂 That's the first video I've seen from you and I'm just impressed how good you are. (Sorry if my english is bad, I'm not from America or Great Britain or something😂)
@christophertsiliacos89585 жыл бұрын
👏👍 Hi Katie - I was quite impressed with the way you played that cheap $30 no-name pink flute; and that's even after hearing you play your 9k Muramatsu. I can only imagine how well you would sound playing a 40k Brannen. As for me, I'm satisfied with my $139 Hallelu HFL-300 concert flute I purchased on Amazon three years ago. 11:37 Even though it’s not worth repairing, when that cheap $30 flute gives up the ghost, you can always make a nice decorative wall hanger out of it for its “aesthetic quality.” It doesn’t necessarily have to be consigned to the junk heap. BTW: You wouldn’t happen to play the pan flute? I’m amazed of how many accomplished concert flutists don’t play the pan flute. I assume you also play the piccolo. Happy fluting! 🎼 ♫ 😄
@satinbarbi5 жыл бұрын
It sounded better than I thought it would but yeah. It would be $30 better spent renting to buy a much better flute for a student. I wonder how long it could be played daily before it was nothing but leaky or sticky pads?

I can see the straining trying to play the pinkie flute! It reminds me of when my mom and dad went to buy a piano when our new house had room for one. The store owner who was blind but could make an old piano out of tune sound wonderful! Katy is fantastic turning a sow’s ear into a silk purse!

The quality of sound depends on 10% of the instrument, and 90% on the musician.

The other point she made is more important than sound: The cheap flute is harder to actually PLAY than her regular instrument.
@discogoth3 жыл бұрын
Kind of. I’m a bassist and a good quality bow actually makes a huge difference. A public middle school’s communal bass will generally have an extremely heavy bow with a plastic stick and the screw will likely tighten and loosen the hair unevenly. A high quality bow is usually a warm sounding but lightweight wood, or carbon. So they’re super light, and the screw usually tightens very smoothly & evenly, giving you the most control on the string. All of this to say, a high quality instrument is far easier to play because you’re knocking out variables left and right to where your musicianship is the deciding factor in how good you sound. I’m a decent bassist, got into music school, and would have graduated with a bass performance degree if I didn’t get hurt and have to quit. But even playing a $100,000 bass I wouldn’t sound as good as Rinat Ibragimov would on a $5,000 bass. However, he wouldn’t sound very good on a $1,000 plywood school bass with a super heavy plastic bow because they’re incredibly hard to play. My first semester of music school I was blown away at the difference in my playing after upgrading to my college’s fully-carved rental bass with a carbon fiber bow, from my high school’s plywood bass/plastic bow.

Hi, Katie (I am a first time visitor to your channel). I purchased an inexpensive flute from an on-line music retailer to take with me when I spend time in my camper. There is no way I would take my good instruments camping but it is fun to have one with me if I want to hike in the nature preserve and play in the forest (and I have always wanted to own a purple flute, anyway so that is another excuse).

A couple of my students had similar flutes and we found that the balance between the thumb and 1st finger (LH) was really off - making the hand position awkward and really tricky to change between B, C and D. (We also found that when they do need repairs, local repairers wouldn't touch them!)
@em_bushell5 жыл бұрын
This honestly makes me miss playing the flute. I quit learning about 3 years ago cause I found it hard to breathe with the songs I was told to play. I think it’s somewhere in my mum’s cupboard so I need to fish it out somehow🤣🤣🤣🤣

Hiya Katie!! Pay me no mind. I just kind of fell in here by accident. Forgive me for saying this, but I really think you could make this pink flute thing a THING!! Maybe you could partner with some mid- to high-end flute manufacturer and become their pink flute ambassador!! I must say you killed it on that bargain basement flute. I was watching your face for signs of strain, and you made it all appear effortless. The low F (I'm guessing) at the end sounded a lot easier on your normal flute. Anyway, this seems like a pretty fun channel. I may have to check back here every so often. :)
