During this pandemic, I lost about 45kg and it happened mainly because I would plan weekly bike challenges and/or adventures, like bikepacking. Also, my diet changed because of "#2 fuel your rides" -I'm eating before the ride, high-calorie snacks during the ride, and a healthy meal for recovery. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate throughout the day! In addition, watch KZbin channels like yours to help achieve your goals or go on bike packing trips. I've learned how to climb hills from you, Katie before I used to avoid them and now it's a fun challenge: ) Last year I pedaled 5,955 km and I am ahead of where I was last year at this time. Honestly I don't understand this "fuel your rides". Few days ago I rode 95km, 1700m altitude gain in 5h51min (with maybe 7min break) on a trekking bike, mostly on tarmac without eating anything at all the whole day before the ride. And during the ride I drank ~400kcal. 3/4 of the mixture of 0,3l orange juice with 0,5l alc-free beer. And it wasn't anything that extraordinary. I was getting cold towards the end. That was my only problem. It was ~0°C the whole day and rather high humidity. And I've done a couple of similar rides in the past, already. It's just that I don't feel that hungry when riding. However if I start to feel hunger I know that I need to do something about it.

Takeaway- “don’t take weightloss as a reason to ride, take cycling as a reason to ride” I can confirm this and I stand by it as someone who started cycling in March 2020 at 116kg and was 84kg by November of 2020. Started gymwork and went up to 90kg and I have been struggling to get back down to 85kg because my goal the whole time was 80kg because of how obsessed road cycling is with weight. Thinking about losing weight on the scale really does stress you out. Been unsuccessful with intermittent fasting and calorie counting mostly because of how stressed out I get because the weight isn’t coming off like it did and I fall off my diet. Right now, I’m just trying to enjoy the adventure like I did before- whatever happens alongside , I’ll take it and enjoy it still. Thanks Katie.

Buy the bike that you’re excited to go ride. If that’s a hybrid that’s built like a tank and yeah it’ll probably last you longer but if a snappy carbon bike gets you back on the bike the next day and the next day then go for it.

Whilst weight loss/management is probably the most visible measurement, another gain is the long term phyiscal health benefits. As someone who has always ridden since being a toddler (I'm 44 now), I was told during an occupational health appointment a couple of years ago at my place of work, I had the lungs of a 22 year old! You're preaching to the choir on the benefits of cycling, but as you say doing it because you enjoy it is the most important thing. Also can't write without mentioning the mental health benefits.

I’m still over weight. 11 stone but I manage Audax rides that I once assumed were there for the super human men in this world. I’m usually at the back - I don’t care I’m a full value rider. As you rightly say, the adventure is everything. Oddly enough I’ve been calorie counting since September and remained at 70 kgs. I’m now fed up with calorie counting it did nothing. Past three weeks without calorie obsessiveness and I’m nearly 65kgs! How come!! But now I’m trying your mind set. The bike, the adventure and much nearer the bottom - my weight.

This is probably the best advice I was ever given. I started in 2020 with road cycling and focussed way too much on calories and weight loss. Because of that I lost my joy and motivation pretty quickly and didn't ride my bike anymore after a few months. After that I gained some weight and lost some only through restricting (kept counting my calories all day) and gained about 10kg last year through being on a new migraine medication (side effect: weight gain) and not caring at all about my nutrition (I mostly ate unhealthy&processed food). My doctor was pretty concerned about my rapid weight gain and me being so uncomfortable with my body. Also colleagues at work started to tell me to go on a diet. So in the end of December I started to watch some road bike content on KZbin again and slowly decided to give the whole thing another try: So I started my Zwift account again, participated in a lots of group rides, the Tour de Zwift and started to check out all these new worlds on Zwift and told myself to ignore all the figures on the screen and to just to it all for fun. My first real challenge was not getting dropped on a Cat-D-group ride, the second was to complete all stages of the Tour de Zwift. I was so fucking proud of myself for doing so. If I hop on the scale, nothing has chanced since December 2022. I still weigh about 70 kgs. But if I look into the mirror so much has chanced: My body composition has changed quite a lot, I lost quite a bit of belly fat, my legs and butt have toned up so much and mentally I feel so much better. I would finally wear a bikini in public again without feeling uncomfortable! Right now I cycle about 20km almost every single day. Just because it brings me joy. And I try to focus on my goals in cycling and a overall balanced, healthy diet without counting calories.

Thanks so much Katie...you are an amazing person. What you share and the way that you care about people's physical and especially their mental health tells me so much about your heart. There was so much great advice in this video but what I liked most was #4 Set goals around the bike...not weight. I have been cycling for years and to this day I can tell you details about the best rides that I accomplished and why they were important to me. My mental health improves so much when I ride and that becomes justification to get out and ride. The physical health aspect of it gets accomplished along the way. I also liked 'wear what you want'. The cycling community is generally filled with good, encouraging people. However, there is the occasional snob who thinks that you have to dress a certain way or ride a certain bike. Forget that...just get out and ride knowing that wonderful people like Katie are cheering you on.

Great advice, Katie. Spot on. Focus on the activity not on the weight loss, and it will come naturally and in its own good time and hence is more likely to stay off. Obv eat healthy food and if you're like me and you have a sweet tooth, don't fill your cupboards with snacks and hey presto there's no temptations to avoid! I totally agree about the scales - chuck em away. I have only the roughest idea what I weigh but like everyone else I know when I'm lean and strong. The only thing I'd add is it's a good idea to include a bit of weight training (especially if you're middle aged) as this builds a strong core, helps stem loss of bone density and muscle mass, and can assist with losing weight and keeping it off.

Great advice. Have seen people getting obsessed with their weight and it's usually downhill from there. It's often an indicator that people have emotional or psychological issues (who doesn't have some of those in the world we live in...) and then the downward spiral with the weight obsession starts. Part of it is that most of us live way too sedentary/static/fixed in place lifestyles and cycling is a wonderful way to not only get the much needed exercise but it also helps us get places (literally and mentally) which I feel is so very critical for our overall well-being.

I only ride with the power off or on eco most of the time, but I know should I struggle or the wind gets up I have help. Some of the best experiences I've had on the bike are when I've been pushing it in the Yorkshire hills on adventures with my son, or when we rode the Leeds Liverpool canal path and I fell in! I started off worrying about my weight but quickly decided that I needed to change to focus on goals, so my first goal is to complete the TdZ Short Routes and my goal for the year is to be able to cycle over both the Rhigos and Bwlch Mountains in South Wales.

@@KatieKookaburra yes that’s me :) ahh AdZ would take me way longer than an hour….. do you have all day? 🤣 I definitely will join you at some point though as I would love to do the AdZ. Also massive thanks as your Bike Fit video with Phil helped me adjust my saddle height, I had it ludicrously low 🤦🏼♀️ just need to get used to it being higher now 🤣

I'm new to your channel and have just watched quite a few of your videos. This one is truly awesome! I've just returned to cycling as a way to get fit and lose quite a lot of weight. Your observations and insight into the right way to do it is truly fantastic! You have such a wise head on young shoulders. Thank you for giving an older man the tools to approach my goals in a constructive and thought provoking way. You are a gem. 👍😊

This is REALLY great, helpful, HEALTHY advice! Thank you so much! I don't think I have a weight problem, but I have tried to limit my diet and get lots of exercise, and it's stupidly ineffective and unenjoyable!

I am 6'2" and at my peak weight last year I was 260lbs. I thought I was in ok shape and healthy as I cycled 60+ miles a day. I was diagnosed with Angina and at the same time put in touch with a diatition. She worked out a diet for me which allowed me to keep eating most of the things I already ate but just much less. She also told me I should only check my weight once a month. I am now down to 190lbs and haven't felt better :-)

You are a true inspiration - I am 6 months into my cycling journey and I absolutely love it -I am watching what I eat (eating more healthier), not worrying about weight and just more like you said, an adventure... as I did the Lions Gate Bridge from the North Shore to the South Shore (it is a hard and i did it)... felt good...and i don't look at the scales, but I know I am getting better as some hills that I had a difficult time of at first are getting easier and my clothes are fitting much better and I have had to get new clothes...:) Keep being you - so so PROUD of you.

Hi Katie. Very nice talk about health. That is such an important reminder that health changes do not happen overnight. Sure! There are some people with quick overnight transitions but the majority of those people just end up right back where they started. The best advice is to take your time and eat clean. BTW. You are the prettiest and sweetest cyclist out there. Even when you were heavier. Keep up the great work of inspiring others. The world needs more people like you.

50kg loser here. Great advice all around Katie. Best comment I got was from a Rapha guide on a group ride. I commented that I loved my Jersey but I wasn’t quite a medium (it really was a touch right) and she just said it was meant to be tight and looked great. Innocuous perhaps but also helped me feeling a bit self-conscious.

I'm really happy that you found the sport that makes you smile, I remember when I first started cycling it was really hard to do 5km because of how unfit I was. Nowadays I actually struggle to maintain my weight because of all the epic rides I do, I don't do it for the exercise anymore, I do it to find new epic places and views!

Well Katie, This is a huge subject, yup I am over weight , I don't drink I don't smoke and I cycle 100 miles a week, easily and enjoy 90 percent of it... Food is such a modern day problem , look at your grandparents or great grandparents and they were on the whole skinny there just wasn't the food around..If your feeling down/ sad you can buy 4 bars of chocolate for a £1 so its a cheap sugar filled pick up just there waiting for you { yes thats something I do / have done not so much now but in years gone by ] You can not out run a bad diet , so don't buy the Biscuits, cake, crisps, full fat drinks , energy drinks ,etc ...Dont buy it you wont eat it . If you do buy and eat it learn from it don't beat yourself up, I can eat a pack of Jaffas before I get to the car if I am in the mood; Cycling is good for you in a few ways physically mentally, and financially [ eventually ] I watched a herd of 30 deer this evening as I cycled home, everyone in cars didn't notice them. You didn't get chubby in a week and it wont go in a week ,people can be unkind thats there problem when they do that there showing you how shallow they are beat them with kindness. Cycling isn't a fashion show wear what your comfortable / happy in [ some padding for your behind always helps ] . Even when your skinny wearing braces a high vis top daft expensive cold shoes and a hard hat wont be your best look. Enjoy. Your story Katie makes me want to cry, no one should go through that self hurting , your body is the thing your personality uses to get about and thats the important bit 65 kg or 165 kg the inner you is the real you

You are a true ambassador for the sport of cycling. You're inspirational videos along with your bubbly personality is extremely motivational. I agree that the scales is not the true reflection of your health. It is what you feel, how you perform and your overall wellness. Bad weight will come off and be replaced with the good weight (fat vs muscle). Keep up the great work you do. 😀❤

Well done on all that you are achieving KK & then some for your openness in sharing with us all. All fantastic & realistic suggestions . Getting rid of the scales was the best thing I ever did. Got myself a standard commuter style flat-bar in 2019 to assist in my health & well-being (hesitated in committing to a road bike & had to suffer the long wait when the events of 2020 played out with supply delays & the same happening with my gravel bike, maybe I should order my MTB now 😂). Cycling has allowed me to switch off from the ‘noise’ of the world.

You are in inspiration Katie! I myself have been on a weight loss journey over the past few years. Have always been a big guy, tall, broad shoulders, long torso so I could really hide a lot of weight in my body. Got up to 162kgs at my heaviest. Am down to 108kgs now and even though I am still heavy then the physique is totally different. When I started cycling I was focused on the number on the scale but now, even though I weigh myself regularly, then that number has taken a backseat to what I want to do as a cyclist. I started riding on a touring bike, because I never wanted to subject a road bike to my weight at the time. Now I ride my touring bike for bike touring trips, I ride my endurance road bike for long distance day rides and then there is a gravel bike on its way into my stable. Thanks for the inspiration Katie, hopefully you will get a chance to ride here in Iceland one day. Would love to show you around...

P.S. I've also been on-and-off plant-based vegan for the past 8 years ...the concept of food as fuel for my ride or other activities has been an immense help to propel my abilities. It's a very lonely conviction, so always nice to hear when others share it. ♡

Thank you so much for this video. I'm a vegan and an avid cyclist and I've put on 10kg over this time last year. It's been difficult to accept, and I can't figure out why I've put on the weight. I've been fasting and standing on the scale every day and I'm not getting any lighter or happier. Winter here in Canada is ending soon and I plan to put away the scale and plan some long adventures on the bike, fuelled properly. Liked and subscribed.

Yes yes yes, put the scales away and personally I’ve never fasted - I think regular healthy meals keeps sustaining weight loss easier. But also go easy on yourself it’s been lockdown and so it’s been pretty tough. Weight can be temporary so it’s not there forever :)

Love this! Love your message and healthy outlook on life. Great job on the weight loss (wow)! You look fantastic and more importantly, you look healthy. I particularly loved the bit about decent people not judging - I agree. I love cycling but definitely feel like I have imposter syndrome even after 6 years! (Like, not having the right gear, or not knowing how to fix my bike, etc.) it’s a nice reminder that you don’t need fancy clothes or bikes, just a love for cycling.

Your video and experience you’ve shared are an inspiration. I agree with your advice. I wore gym shorts and a dri-fit T when I started riding. That was when I weighed 350 pounds, I’m still a big guy at 100 kilos but I am way healthier and happier. I do wear lycra now😊and the chamois makes a Century ride waaay more comfortable. Thanks for story!

Completely agree, it is long term goals. As you gain the fitness, you gain the enjoyment, and you can start your journey and that really does help with the weight loss as it's almost an added benefit. My comfortable weight for my size is 100kg, fitness was there....endurance was def there but didn't fit the mould of a "road cyclist" - what ex-swimmer/rugby player would. But, for those out there, 128kg - need I say more....... enjoy, claim back the fitness is manageable steps, everything falls in after if you focus on that fun. For the larger cyclist - FLAB is a great brand, the build in space :)

Excellent! I started riding because i needed a way to get to work after a flood destroyed the ferry terminal near home. When I i moved 10x further from work I continued cycling because I could not pay for parking every day at $15-$35 a day depending on what was available when you arrived. I stuck to this for a year and lost 25kgs quite by accident. Cycling as transport makes setting the goals easy. I never once wore cycling clothes apart from padded pants under my shorts, so don't feel pressured to squeeze into those clothes. It's a slippery slope though, I now have multiple bikes and have had to get my head around a lot of the maintenance because the bike I ride the most is an E-cargo and normal bike shops moan about them being too heavy to service.

I got into triathlon last year and I also thought that it will be a great way to lose more weight. However, I have quickly learnt that eating properly is more important than weight loss. I thought I was eating enough carbs post long bike ride and then next day I would feel like a zombie - turns out my carb/sugar intake was too low. Eating good food and a good amount of macronutrients is so important because you can literally hurt yourself. Having enough fat in the diet is important as it keeps your hormones on a good level, otherwise, it can lead to having no period. Take care of yourself people !

I used to have/still fight with an eating disorder similar to yours. I ban a weighing scales from my house because I am far better off not knowing it. Cycling is really helping my health. I ride a recumbent e-assisted trike due to health reasons. I like that you say go riding for adventure, happiness rather than health/weight based aims.

Can add two more. 1. Ride slowly. Certainly when you start cycling. Most people tend to ride too fast. You develop your basic engine and burn fat at slow pace. 2. Include cycling in your daily life. Your daily commuting, all your small trips, do them by bike.

I didn’t know people were so harsh towards heavier cyclists. I really started to fall in love with the sport once I got out there and found some good trails. Have noticed how easy it is to keep weight off if you do it consistently. It’s my cheat code towards eating all the junk I want.
