The new 2022 form asks “How many jobs will you and your spouse have this year in which federal income tax is regularly withheld? Include past, present, and future jobs. The first one has been added for you.” I’m filing jointly and my husband works, should I put 2?

Hello! Thank you so much for the helpful video. If I use the slider to change my withholding because I want my paycheck to be bigger, but then I get a raise halfway through the year… would I need to submit a new W-4 and recalculate my withholdings?

I’m confused. If I want to see more in my check and less of a refund at the end of the year, then wouldn’t I need to take less withholding instead of adding more? I’m confused why line 4c would need to be filled. Where did the $151 come from if $320 less than the current withholding?
@erikcastillo88574 жыл бұрын
Hi, im curious about this as well. Last year i did the calculator and both my wife and i entered the amount that it asked me to and i ended up owing money this year. I checked the calculator again and its telling me the same deal that i have to adjust line 4c to the recommended amount but its actually lower than the top amount mentioned. Is this a glitch or am i doing something wrong?
@Darvineb862 жыл бұрын
Did anyone here figure out the problem? My pre filled form gives me a number in step 3 line 3, but it’s my understanding that if I want less withholdings i then have to increase the number in 4b.
@KatieStOresCFPChFCEA2 жыл бұрын
[4:28pm PST] @TaxesbyKatie.com Hello Darvin, Like you said, if you want less withholding, increase the number on 4(b). If you really want to dial in a number, try using the IRS withholding tax estimator (which was just recently updated). You can make adjustments and then see how these adjustments affect your withholding. That way you can dial it in. Use the results from the estimator to determine what information to put on your W-4. Please take a look at this video to help use the IRS tax estimator. kzbin.info/www/bejne/p2qnfpmprdWHf8U OR Here's a direct link to the tax estimator www.irs.gov/individuals/tax-withholding-estimator

Hello, Thanks for doing all of these videos...They are great! My question is about the W-4. I filled out the form using boxes 1 and 5. The Company payroll department did not take out any Fed or State tax. Shouldn't they know how much to take out according to my tax bracket or do I have to tell them myself? I'm a little confused on what to do.........Thanks!

[4:59pm PST] @TaxesbyKatie.com Hello Rick, It's possible that you might not have anything withheld. But just to make sure, try using the IRS tax withholding estimator (just updated a couple of days ago). Hi Kate, I just watched your W4 2021 video and it was very helpful. Thank you!!! I had a question - My husband's new job withholds taxes. I work for 2 other companies as an independent contractor. I saw on the tax estimator that it referred to jobs which have taxes withheld. My jobs don't withhold federal taxes, as I pay them myself at tax time. Does my husband even need to fill out Step 2 on the tax form since I am an independent contractor?

@KatieStOresCFPChFCEA Жыл бұрын
Hi Stop it, If you're an hourly worker and looking to manage your tax withholdings, the government's IRS withholding estimator is a great tool to use. This tool can help you calculate how much federal income tax you should have withheld from your paychecks based on your income, filing status, and other factors. By using the estimator, you can make sure that you're withholding the correct amount of tax and avoiding any potential underpayments or overpayments. Give it a try. So when I do this estimator for my wife and I the pre filled W4s doesn't put the child on either form. We have a job each and one kid. There is a decent difference in pay between us. Why is it leaving that $2000 for the child blank on the pre filled form? Do I add that manually? We had a 3k tax bill this year and trying to avoid that surprise again

I still dont understand if the amounts you enter are pre-tax or post-tax. The form does not explain this.
@KatieStOresCFPChFCEA Жыл бұрын
Hello Evan, You are using pre tax amounts. What the W-4 is doing is figuring out your after tax amounts.... or Withholdings. How much your employer is going to "withhold" from your Gross (pre-tax) wages. Then your employer sends your withholdings to the government.

So the estimator didn't make any changes unless you fill out the form according to your results from the estimator and send it in to the IRS?
@KatieStOresCFPChFCEA3 жыл бұрын
[1:23pm PST] @TaxesbyKatie.com Hey Eezie, Yes, you have to put your data in the tax estimator and use the results from the estimator to determine what information to put on the W-4. But you do not send your W-4 to IRS, you give it back to your employer once it is complete.
Hi! My husband and I both work and we have 2 children.. do we both fill out 4(c) based off of the tax estimator? Also, I am the higher paying job.. do I still need to enter the $4,000 for my 2 dependents as well as the recommendation in 4c?
@KatieStOresCFPChFCEA2 жыл бұрын
[10:05am PST] @TaxesbyKatie.com Hey Ashley, If there is a significant difference in wages between spouses, then it makes sense for the higher wage earner to include the extra withholding (Step 4(c)) on their W-4 and for the other spouse just to complete Steps 1 and 5 and claim the kids BUT it really depends on each situation.
