In Tennessee they have some parasite or bacteria in the grass. If equines in late pregnancy eat it, it can cause problems for the foals. So they take them off the grass.

There’s a particular hormone(?) in the grass in that area, that tends to make equines (horses, donkeys, mini horses) either abort their pregnancies before the foals are viable; or makes the pregnancy more likely to fail, I’m not sure which exactly. I believe it’s more of a mid/late-term abortion, which is why the mares get pulled off towards the end of the pregnancy. I don’t think it has any negative effects on milk production or the foals wellbeing in general, which is why they aren’t kept of the grass after the foal drops and before weaning.
