Thank you for this information! Tourist here! We were actually at Solheimajökull Glacier about to do a guided hike that day. Our tour guide went over all the safety information, gave us ice picks, harnesses, helmets, and crampons and told us a brief history of Katla. After we walked about .75 miles towards the glacier, our tour guide said the police were evacuating us due to glacier floods and potential volcanic activity. Very scary moment since we had such little information at the time and had a long way to go back to get to our car. My thoughts were racing at this time, but luckily we were able to get out of there and avoid flooded roads. 😅 My family all joked that the guided tour was a tourist trap to get our money quick and not have to actually take us on the glacier, but I know that wasn't the case because they refunded us 😂

@@michaeld5888 The appearance of mysterious changelings aren't a typical aspect of Icelandic eruptions, but otherwise, yeah. I watched the series a couple weeks before going there myself, and the thought of tumbling into a crevasse was definitely in my mind as I went snowmobiling on Mýrdalsjökull.

I really hope enough people in the US come to their senses before November and realise that while humans cannot control volcanoes, we’re the direct cause of the scale of the forest fires that plague North America these days. Also wishing you personally strength to deal with the immediate impact of those specific fires in your region.
@dolphinschild624 ай бұрын
Thank you everyone. They caught the arsonist who did it. He caught a car on fire and pushed it off the road into embankment. Not all fires are human created, lightning has a huge play. With them seeding the skies, those chemicals are on plants, which make fires even more volatile. Iceland is beautiful and built by the volcanoes, and volcanoes are always in creation.

Good morning Gylfi, So Katla finally started to make troubles as predicted by you earlier this year. I’m curious what it will bring. Hopefully without much damage and casualties. I know the problems of mounting a camera to the car. I use a heavy duty metal mount with suction cup. I place that on the inside of the car on the front window, in the middle,just above the dashboard. The sides of the front window and the bonnet aren’t visible if you aim the camera correctly. I noticed that the outside of the window isn’t as smooth as the inside so even after cleaning, the suction cup didn’t always hold on. The inside works fine but make sure to clean both sides of the window. Inside is also easier because you can connect the camera to a battery pack.

We were vacationing in Vik on our way to Hofn next when this happened. We were "on hold" about whether the road would reopen but it seemed terribly dodgy even if it opened to go to Hofn and possibly have another issue with the road. So we gave up our lodging costs in Hofn and instead went to a different part of Iceland. The information you provided here is dramatically different than what we were presented with on the safety websites. I am glad we decided to change our itinerary. I hope the rooms can be rerented so we can get some refund of our lodging but that money is water under the bridge. (a saying that seems appropriate for this) More importantly I hope Iceland can remain safe. The dependence on this section of road seems to be a big liability. Our map app showed our driving time to Hofn jumped to over 12 hours when they closed the road.
