It makes me really very happy that the Swedish word for bat is flutter mouse

Just like in German (and the opera) Die Fledermaus! Bats are my favorite animal, but it's no wonder people think they are rodents 😭

And I finally realized why in German we say „Fledermaus“, „fledern“ probably being an older form for saying „flattern“ - „to bat one‘s wings“.

Kat, I spent the last year learning Swedish using Duolingo and finished the tree a month ago. As you know, because you’ve mentioned learning German on Duolingo, it is difficult to hear the pronunciation on Duo and it is especially important in Swedish and Norwegian because they are both pitch languages. I had no idea about the pitch or the prosody of Swedish words and sentences from Duolingo. I’m not being negative about Duo, I learned so much from that App. On your Slow Swedish vlogs, I can understand 99% of what you say, but I’m learning the correct pronunciation too. So a huge thank you for these videos. They are the best! I am working through all your vlogs because I discovered you by accident only three days ago and I’m completely captivated by them. They are all interesting, useful, and different. I especially appreciated the time you spent regarding the difficult SJ (TJ etc. combinations) sound and wonder if I’ll ever be able to say sjö like a Swedish person. I can make the k sound ok, but can’t combine it with the following vowel sound properly. My biggest wish, however, is to be able to say the letter “i” the way Swedes do. Please could you help us? I know I am not alone. I have tried moving my tongue to various positions, but if I can make the i sound similar to yours, I find it impossible to combine it with a consonant. The words “bil” or “bli” (as examples) sound totally different when I say them (British here) from when a Swedish person says them. Hjälp! Tack så mycket för alla dina underbara vloggar.

I have learned a bit with Duolingo, but I've spent 2 years trying to get through it. But the week or so I've been watching Katrin's videos have been so much more helpful. My niece is Swedish and I was so excited to tell her about these videos. We were chatting in Messenger and suddenly we were typing away in Swedish. She was very proud of her Auntie! My niece speaks fluent English, of course, but it's something I've wanted to do since she was little. (She is 32 haha). I watched a 3-part series on the "sj" sound and finally got it (I've never been able to say sju): kzbin.info/www/bejne/hafPqIuHZsd3rMU Other than Katrin's videos, that series was super helpful! I'm ready for my next trip to Stockholm!!!

Thank you Katrin for speaking Swedish slowly and clearly!😀 I'm trying to learn it on my own and I finally start to understand some simple words and phrases and I can read some short texts. It's such a great feeling when you can understand a foreign language (Swedish seems so hard after English, Italian and Spanish, but that won't stop me!).

I’m a native English speaker, but being from Canada, I can speak french pretty well so I noticed right away the similarities between the pronunciation of squirrel in Swedish and in french. In french, a squirrel is un écureuil (surprisingly close pronunciation to Swedish). Thank you for his video!! I love learning Swedish!!

I learned that skoldpaddor are turtles. Is the name for a tortoise the same as for turtles? Also, anyone else have difficulty with the sk-, kj- k- sounds in Swedish? Sometimes a k sound sounds like an english k sound. Sometimes it sounds like a sh-sound and sometimes a sound that sounds like a breath. Very difficult to keep in mind.

I'll tell you point-blank, the truth. I am someone important, in a divine sense, and you are meant to be an associate, and your future daughter is meant to be set up [by you and me] to marry my second-born son. This is the honest-to-goodness truth, believe it or not. your blue eye make-up is cool also
@SlowSwedishwithKatrin5 жыл бұрын
Ew haha. There will be no future daughter. Unless your son wants to marry a dog, which would be very inappropriate.
