Another serious gut punch... Even though we knew it was coming it, yet again, still hurt. Phenomenal episode all the way through, so freaking intense!

When you analyze the Sam turning scene, he had asked Ellie to watch him so if he turned she would be ready and get help so he wouldn't hurt her, they probably both fell asleep but he turned away from her and since he couldn't hear, he would wake up turned but without seeing her, he would not attack unless he directly saw her( again Sam not able to hear saved Ellie from being attacked in her sleep), his last act before he turned was to protect Ellie, he was the hero he dressed up as

Probably an anachronism, as the KC area didn't get an IKEA until 2014. We only had 23 stores in the whole country in 2003, the nearest being all the way in Houston at the time. And as someone who lived nearby in Colorado at the time, I doubt people in Kansas/Misouri had even HEARD of Ikea in 2003.

Even in an episode where the infected (can I please just call them zombies?) killed so many and caused so much destruction, the humans are still the greater evil. Kathleen, due to her obsessive desire for revenge upon Henry, pretty much got what remained of everyone in Kansas City killed. The only negative thought that I can think of for this episode is that Kathleen didn't live long enough to realize what she's done and have deep regrets about it.
@deanthemachine7489
@deanthemachine7489 Жыл бұрын
A big part of why I’m liking this series so far compared to most post-zombie apocalypse fare is that there isn’t a running dramatic secret between Joel and Ellie that gets dragged out over the season for a big reveal to divide them. Their dynamic seemed to have been fairly well sorted by episode 3 or so and new people every few episodes are the source of the drama. Walking Dead stretched interpersonal secrets as plot elements over whole seasons to the point of exhaustion.

Thank you. I haven't played the games so I appreciate your care in not giving things away before it happens in the story. The combination of the 2 show runners one from the game and one from Chernobyl has been outstanding in additional creativity. The actor who played Sam is actually deaf and the behind the scenes about working with him is fascinating. They had an ALS (American Sign Language) coach on set. Sam and Henry's story is very tragic and feels like a Shakespeare plot - from Hamlet perhaps? The actors for Joel and Ellie were amazing. Ellie's cry when Henry kills himself and Joel's face as he carries out his sniper's role of protecting Ellie especially from such a distance are both beautiful. Thanks again and I hope you get to sleep a bit more soon.

I played the game so even though I pretty much knew what would happen I was still saying like every 10 minutes “wow they’re really twisting that knife already”. Just giving us moments like Sam and Ellie talking about the Savage Starlight comics (which I hope to god Dark Horse comics comes out with a limited series of that comic) and then playing soccer was so beautifully heartwarming. And then we get to the scene I had been dreading throughout the episode which was the night Sam was infected. And they made it EVEN MORE heartbreaking by Ellie trying to heal Sam with his blood and failing. But what really broke me was that the very first time Henry ever kills someone, even if they’re infected, that it was his baby brother. Then ending it with Joel and Ellie burying them, and Ellie writing to Sam “I’m Sorry”.😭😭😭😭

And also, something I see very few people point out is that the only shots that Joel "missed" in the series (other than those on the truck in this episode, but let's be honest, those are near impossible to land in real life) was when he was covering for Ellie right after the car crash. As soon as he saw Ellie couldn't see him kill these men, he shot twice, killing both.

Great observation @ 6:27 about love making you do crazy things because Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann said that is the theme of the entire series. Love is powerful and can be very dangerous because people will do ANYTHING in the name of love. Mazin went on to talk about love and hate being two sides of the same coin and how horrific acts of violence, extremism, racism, and xenophobia can almost always be traced back to some kind of idea of love. Kathleen and Henry both exemplify that in their own ways.

24:11 that blood curdling whimpering/scream Ellie lets out and the look of utter horror on her face, her flinching, as the events of the scene unfolded before her, has haunted me to this day; ".....give me the gun Henry, give me the gun.....HENRY NOOO....!!!!" nobody was ready for this horrific ending, nobody. also, inside of 5 episodes, notice how they have changed places at the ending. in the episode when Tess dies, Joel can be seen walking on from it while Ellie stands there shaken, in this episode, when Joel is finished burying Sam & Henry, Ellie walks on from it while Joel stands there, shaken.

One added detail to the tv-show of these events, that make things even more tragic: Henry explains to Joel that he's never actually killed anyone. His first (and only) kill, ended up being his own brother. Even knowing how the events would go (from the game), it still triggered the waterworks when it played out in the episode.

What worries me the most about catastrophic events from like massive and prolonged power outages (weeks) up to country-ravaging natural disasters, is the abuse of power. I heard stories about police officers who abused other people, or even other refugees/sheltered people who abused more fragile refugees. :( If those TV shows should teach us anything, it's that power and communication should be transparent, bidirectional, and shared. 😬 This helps preventing blind spots and authoritarianism.

Ellie and Joel switch sides at the end. That was the Tess moment from episode 2. Ellie runs ahead while Joel is still waiting at the grave. Tess gave Joel a mission he wanted to fulfill as her last wish. The relationship that Joel had with Tess was similar to Ellie and Sam. Ellie promised (unspoken with hope) Sam the cure here and couldn't keep this promise. She now wants to make sure that this never happens again. As Tess said at the time "save who you can save". Ellie really has a mission now. Indirectly get through her feelings of guilt. She wants her blood to work. Before that, she was someone who had no control over anything. Others have determined where she grows up and where she has to go now. "I didn't ask for this" were her words in episode 2. Now that has changed. Now conviction plays a role and she takes control. She wants to save the world so that there are no more Sam's. And while Joel gradually finds his humanity again and lets people into his life again, Ellie loses a little more of herself and she takes the lead here in the end. I think the series showed that more clearly in this way than the game did. In addition, Ellie and Joel have reached a new level of connection with each other. Wordless understanding. Both wanted to save the brothers during the attack. That wasn't Joel's "don't do it Ellie" look. That was the look "I'll give you fire protection Ellie". And Ellie has absolute confidence in Joel. There was also a little joke about the game. The moment when the sniper shot and Henry and Sam senselessly ran out of cover, only to return immediately. This is how Ellie behaved very often in the game. She ran out of cover, right in front of the enemy and then back again. Spoiler Part 2 Game: Oh yes and btw we all hate Kathleen for what she does. She subordinates everything to her revenge. How do we know this? Part 2. A beloved character becomes Kathleen and we loved it.
