This album taught me that Capitol Records no longer cares about Katy Perry being an essential Pop artist, because there’s no way people in that building believed this album could compete in the market against the Pop albums that dropped this past year.
@MatthewHudsonOfficial2 ай бұрын
What I don't understand is why Capitol allowed her to release this album when they didn't want to promote it. Woman's World, Lifetimes, IHHM all received around 30-40 million playlist reach on Spotify. It's NOTHING. Basically all popular artists debut with 100M playlist reach, but Capitol didn't believe in this project yet let Katy release all of it. There was a lot of goodwill happening before the album release but they didn't even want ONE song to be pushed to an actual standard.

You can’t blame the label/lack of promotion for this. She has 205 million instagram followers who knew her album was coming, she paid TikTok influencers to promote her singles and album, she did interviews, performed at the VMA’s… she had all the promotion in the world. We heard the album. The world heard the album. It’s just not good. This is literally just a case of the music not being good. All the promotion in the world can’t force people to like the music.

The reason why this misstep is so egregious is because the Pop drought is OVER. The water was finally warm again for Katy to come back with a capital ‘P’ Pop album. A lot of the music business is timing, and the time to strike was *NOW.* This could’ve been her big comeback to redeem herself from ‘Witness’ and ‘Smile’, but it was botched. I actually blame Capitol Records, bc the A&R failures on this album are so glaringly obvious that the lack of vision or creative direction here almost feels like they set her up to flop. The people in this comment section could’ve A&R’d an album better than this for Katy. For example, why all rap features, but no country features….in 2024…Why? 🤨 Why no song with a K-pop artist? Y’all don’t wanna try new sounds? Afrobeats, Amapiano, hyperpop, jersey club…anything creative?…anything at all…? No…? Oh well then ig 😩

I was thinking the same thing. The lyrics, vocals, and songwriting was more mature on her debut album One Of The Boys. She said once Katy and Bonnie parted ways, the music suffered, and ngl it’s kinda facts. Your comment just reminded me of that conversation we had in the office all those years ago. It seems true now more than ever. If she truly wanted to relive her glory years, Katy should've been calling Bonnie to help write 143 instead of Dr Luke.

Katy should’ve been watching Sabrina Carpenter closely, because Sabrina is lowkey succeeding with the frothy Pop songs with cheeky lyrics that made Katy famous - that used to be her thing. But ‘Short-n-Sweet’ sounds effortlessly contemporary compared to ‘143’. All she really had to do is study what working w/ Chappell, Sabrina, Ariana, Dua, Charli and copy bits and pieces to build her album. It would’ve been derivative 😅 but at least it wouldn’t have sounded completely out of touch 🤷🏾♂️

Katy is 39/40 now. Madonna dropped ‘Ray of Light’ at 39 and it is arguably her most critically acclaimed album and won 4 Grammys. ‘143’ needed to be Katy’s ‘Ray of Light’ era. It needed to silence doubters and prove she had substance. She’s had enough hits. She doesn’t need more. Now she should pivot to focusing on digging deeper & garnering acclaim as a legacy act. Madonna already did the hard work, she left the blueprint with ‘Ray of Light’ & ‘Confessions on a Dancefloor’, all Katy had to do was follow in her footsteps 🦶

'Ray of Light' revitalised her image and got her career back on track. That's why I brought it up - there are clear similarities between where Madonna was then and where Katy is now.

All Katy needs is a self titled project where she elevates her lyricism and digs truly deep with real topics. It can still be pop, but it can have indie influences and alternative influences and I think that would be her best bet. She can still push through but she fought a random hate wave unfortunately once again (Smile era).

*There are TWO things that happened to her. Witness put Katy Perry in a hyper speed decline almost overnight. What really nailed the coffin was Smile flopping and selling 50k the first week. For a MAIN pop girl... like... she was just never seen the same EVER again. Secondly, Capitol Records has never supported her like they did pre- Witness, and I really don't know why. It feels like they were trying to push other artist's in Capitol, yet no other artist on that label had a big era recently. 143 comes as an album that was supposed to undo all of this, BUT it felt so FLAT that people are making sure she never comes back, which is just a shame. I will say the collaborations that she did give us... NO ONE asked for. Everything that could've gone wrong with this era, DID. I said this was Witness 2.0 without the sales, and I was correct. 💔*

I think there's 3 main issues for this album rollout, besides the Dr. Luke drama: 1. Capitol records - I feel like they wanted her to not succeed, I've seen ZERO promotion for the album, and I feel for someone who has had MEGA hits, the production feels unfinished/like demo versions for the songs and they should have taken more time/another round of studio time to really solidify the project (more layers, harmonies etc.). No risks were taken on the project (no testing genres of music) and the features felt like it was mainly just artists who work with Dr. Luke (other artists might have been hesitant to hop on a project produced by Dr. Luke) 2. Release time - there have been so many albums from major artists this year, not only interesting production-wise but many lyrical dense songs/projects that 143 just feels lacking in comparison/empty production wise. I honestly think if she waited till later this year or even next year it might have come across better 3. Leaks - so many of the songs got leaked early on in the album rollout, that it killed the hype for the album release. I personally do not agree that the era aesthetic does not work for her, just cuz she's in her late 30s doesn't mean she can't feel powerful/strong in her feminine energy, and personally I have loved the cyber/futuristic aesthetic of the era, and her outfits have been on point. I just hope she doesn't give up after this album release, and definitely needs a new team/new people to work in the studio (Zedd, Alesso etc. were great collabs, more of that)

Nailed it on the head. We have options to stream what WE want now instead of the radio so we don't have to listen what was just on the radio 24/7. I guarantee most of her hits wouldn't stand today.

It’s the fact that I liked more tracks from Witness and Smile than I did for 143 😭 Katy Please either give us a good deluxe or just hang it up and keep your status as a legend.

She made a bathhouse album. Nothing great, just something to muffle out the sounds of heavy breathing and white men grunting.

Your take on her being a product was spot👏🏾on👏🏾. I noticed it during her performance of Roar during the 2013 VMAs. I could see the expiration date on her even then🤦🏾♀️.

The katycat fandom was never just gay men, was a lot of women from all ages but not teens actually, at least not in the present since plenty grew up with her, straight, lesbian, bi women, also straight men, her fanbase was always very diverse

I think she just wanted to go on tour tbh. She really enjoyed her vegas show and now she wants to tour again, show her daughter the world and for that she needed an album or else the label wouldn’t back a tour with nothing new to promote. So she churned out a quick dance pop record, which isn’t that much dancier than prism… it makes feel like half the songs were prism rejects re-worked which is why DR Luke could help facilitate it, to use her words. In any of the interviews she’s done she seemed to want to talk more about Daisy and Orlando than the music, which is fine, but I think as well she’s probably actually genuinely happy in her life and doesn’t need to bust her ass and doesn’t have that hunger to perfect work like she did when she was starting out.

Because her validation doesn’t come from her music anymore, she just loves to perform more than anything. She’s a performer rather than a musician

16:17 yeah it is engineered and orchestrated and manufactured. I worked as an international marketing intern for 3 months at EMI Music in London in Katy’s epic pop hit era. (EMI and Capitol are basically linked and she is signed to both) I’ve sat in those marketing meetings discussing Katy. It’s all orchestrated. They chased that Kanye feature on ET because they wanted as big a global reach for that song to be a hit. She could have went authentic and either fleshed out the song or get a more aligned rapper/artist that could make the song just better and better written. Katy and her team picks features to seem cool and to tap into different genres and fan markets. That Doechii/Katy collab worked on me playing a Katy Perry song on repeat on Spotify. I haven’t played a Katy Perry song in years. Also… Katy needs to stop working with Dr Luke. Where’s her artistry to say “this ain’t working Luke”? 🤦🏽♂️

I listened to the album Sunday and I was SAD. it's not my Katy from early 2010's. No lyricism, no energy it's what I fear will happen when Rihanna records a new album. Like I'm married kids very very rich. I'm just showing up to these sessions so I don't get FINED vibes 😂

Personally I think in real life Katy is home , homesteading, being a conservative tradwife… but her money isn’t in tradwife circles. That’s why this sounds empty, soulless, tryhard, and dated. The costume doesn’t fit and the threads are bare
