As a kid this music video disturbed me, even though everyone seemed happy something felt very wrong. I remember avoiding it & not liking it. Now rewatching it I think I get it now. Katy Perry really has great songs.

Me too! It is kind of weird for me to see everybody so happy, yet the words depicting something so...different. It was like people were almost hypnotized. However, the same as you, I started listening to it again.

Well, it's a lot of things. It's technically not super deep, but it's one of my favorite songs of hers simply 'cause it's just like points at how we stick to the status quo of society even if it hurts us little, simply because it feels safe. Change is necessary to improve. But change is also scary, so we stick to what we know. That's why the song is about people chained to the rhythm, even though they can leave at any point. No one wants to leave because they feel safe where they are, even though we all know that something ain't right about that place.
