Kaushiki jee is lucky that she is born in a musical family and her hard work and focus on classical music certainly pays off. I heard this so many times and still want to listen to it again and again, amazing!

I don't pretend to be able to describe what I think are the methods of Indian classical music, vocally at least, but I love the way Kaushiki can hit the 'fat middle' of a note, then modulate so elegantly around/under/over the central melodic line. Its so pleasing to the ear. I'm sure there is much more going on here in addition, but this is my perspective on the vocal side of this performance. I love the work of the harmonium in this as well.

meluhawasi I was first attracted to this music by a singer who has lived much of her life in Canada, and much in India...her name is Kiran Ahluwalia...she sings ghazals (I'm probably spelling that wrong, sorry if I am) and has broadened that form out to work with musicians from Mali and other idioms such as blues and jazz . I think I understand to a degree much of what you are telling me and will give all you've said consideration to better understand this music in future. Thanks for 'teaching me' here, that's really good of you. I really appreciate this! : ))

Swede McGuire Yup, she is very adept. Ustad Ali Akbar Khan possibly the most brilliant composer of the 20the century who died a few years ago described the training that goes into being an indian classical singer thus: 10 years of hard practice before one's music pleases oneself. another 10 years before it pleases others and you are considered a performer. another 10 years before your music pleases your guru. And many many years more before your music is pleasing to your God.

Seeing her and listening her I feel as if Goddess Saraswati herself has descended on the Earth to makes classical music popular. The old ustaads, Pandits, Begums, Devis, Bais were no doubt genius but were totally unmindful of level of audience. Kaushiki has shown us how Classical music can be made enjoyable to even untrained ears without any dilution of its purity or 'fusion'.
