Hey KaveMan amazing video. Can i ask you a question. I have a 20 gallon cube aquarium that is 1 week old. I have been dosing with stability everyday for 7 days and putting a small amount of fish food in. When i checked my Nitrate it looks like it is coming up 0. Atm im running a Fluval C4 with some Matrix inside the filter so apparently it filters 1000Ltr a hr . I was wondering does the 0 Nitrate mean my tank isnt cycled yet or already cycled and do you think it would be ok if i grab a few fish and just dose with Prime and Stability and if so how long would i know till i can stop using stability and prime. Thanks so much for this video your channel is probably the best on youtube honestly so nice and clear.

Hi Kev I am one of those old dudes you talk about who knew nothing about all the fantastic new stuff available these days, from LED tank lights to Seachem Prime. I followed your directions with my new 155 litre community tank of panda corys, cardinal tetras, flying foxes, an angel and a ram. Every day I have added one capful of Prime, 40 ml quickstart (because the store sent me home with that) and some general aquarium plant food to the water. No water changes. (that was the hardest part to take on board, but you explained it so clearly, it made sense. No water changes while cycling!) About 2 weeks passed, testing every day and I freaked out when I saw the first signs of ammonia and ran to the computer to watch your video again. Okay..no water changes, you definitely said that. Geez but it was hard to resist whipping out half a tank of water but I stayed on track. Watched the ammonia climb from 0.5 to 1.0 and then the nitrites began the other day, with ammonia maintaining at 1.0. Meanwhile another week on and continuing the daily treatments. Low nitrates are showing and the water remains crystal clear thanks to an inside filter and the Tidal 55 filter you recommended and which I set up the way you said to in your video. The fish are looking healthy and happy and I want to thank you so much for making these videos. Nobody else set it out so clearly, including the staff at the aquarium shop who told me not to use Prime as it would interfere with the cycling. They obviously haven't read the info on the bottle. In my day the popular wisdom held that cardinal tetras and neons couldn't be added until the tank had been set up at least six months. I haven't lost a single fish doing it your way, so thank you so much! imgur.com/gallery/0adJTN5 And good luck with your foray into plants!

I gotta say your video saved me. I was getting so frustrated with my tank and I was ready to give up on the hobby. After watching your videos and dosing the tank with the correct amount of prime and stability it only took a week and a half to get to the parameters I needed. AND I DIDNT LOSE ANYMORE FISH. Thank you so much for your videos! Keep up the great work! Aloha from Hawaii!

Thank you for this! Just purchased both products for same day delivery!! We were at the pet store getting dog food and my son fell in love with a blue Betta fish ( his first new pet since our others are twice his age already) so I asked the workers what we need to buy and they sold us $150 of new stuff including a small 3 gallon new tank and told us that we can put the fish in after 15 minutes! After we got home and I set up the tank, I googled how to add the fish and even posted in a moms group on Facebook. A lot of people said 15 minutes was fine , some 24 hours, some right away.. but I don’t think what they realize that I have a brand new fish tank that has not been cycled! Luckily, one commentor told me about the cycling and that I can’t do it with the fish in but it’s tricky. So then I found your KZbin at five in the morning here and ordered the products to be delivered same day. I’m just open. My little guy survives in his cup that he came in until tomorrow afternoon when we can get all the products!

This ABSOLUTELY eased my mind and sort of makes all the pieces fall together in what I've been researching, and what my tests have been showing. The best method I found on how to start a new tank for me was to go to the grocery store and buy some frozen raw shrimp. Take one out and put it in a stocking or netting of some sort and put it in your new aquarium. It takes about a week or two, but keep testing the water. When you see no more ammonia and begin to see nitrate in your aquarium, you can start adding animals. Remove the stocking or netting and you're done. I found this to be the safest and cheapest way to get the tank cycled.

Your guides have been a life saver. I recently set up a 2.2 gallon tank for my daughter in her room. We added a betta and a mystery snail. I added de-chlorinator and kick start to the water on day 1. I saw cloudiness by day 3 (bacterial bloom). The betta seemed unaffected, but I was noticing nitrate and nitrite spikes on the test strip. I think at day 4 or 5 it was showing "danger" on the test strip. It has been a full 7 days since the tank was set up. I just added doses of kick start when things were out of whack. I followed that up by making sure to clean up uneaten fish food, visible poop, and algae wafers. The tank finally cleared up today and my levels are finally balanced. The tank is as clear as it was on day 1. My filter media only has some small brown spots where the water nozzles flow through. The snail and the betta are very active. They don't seem overly stressed from the process. The snail is just a lazy turd (he made me think he was dead a couple times before climbing to the top of the tank and parachuting back to the bottom). Overall, it just took a little patience and monitoring. Had I not watched your tutorials, I would have probably been doing unnecessary water changes and scratching my head! Thank you for your time and knowledge!

My fish in cycling (emergency rehoming situation) only truly began when I stopped the daily water changes. Prime and Stability saved my fish and now we’re fully cycled! Thanks for putting out this information, it’s going to help a ton of new fish keepers 🐟 It would be cool if you could put the dosage somewhere here or in a new video to help others. 1 dose covers 1ppm ammonia/2ppm nitrite and so on then 5 doses covers 5ppm ammonia/10ppm nitrite.

@@lindatinker3215 So 20gallons in litres is 75litres. Prime’s dose is 0.025ml per litre. So 0.025x is 1.875ml. One dose of Prime detoxifies 1ppm of ammonia/2ppm nitrite for 24-48 hours. Two doses (3.75ml) covers 2ppm ammonia/4ppm nitrite and so on You can safely dose up to 5x a single dose which obviously to find, you just x a single dose by 2,3,4,5. I recommend a pipette to help with the dosing as it is highly concentrated.

I've done both. Using the Seachem products works but is a little scary watching the ammonia and nitrite numbers fluctuate. I have now successfully used Dr. Tim's Aquatics ammonium chloride to do a fishless cycle twice and it has taken about 10-12 days both times. It doses ammonium chloride artificially to the tank and starts the cycling process. It works pretty well if you follow their instructions. Folks will just have to decide which they think is best both are viable options.

THANKS KAVEMAN! You found yourself a new subscriber. I want to tell you my story. I was following father fishes guidelines and i like the idea of a planted no water change tank and chemical free. BUT i didnt realize all the little details and for a planted aquarium to work good your talking nano fish with very little waste . I added fish day 2 like fatherfish said ...... in two weeks my ammonia , nitrite and nitrate where off the chart l. I did a 50 percent water change then I found your video here i am 8 Days later and my tank is cycled i used max dose of 5x daily of prime. You should do a video explaining this to other new people as we are looking at all the videos and father fish is not giving enough info. Especially for the fish adding part. A few nano fish might of been okay. I added 6 tigar barbs and it was not okay.

I had been using API stress coat for a while now, just easier to get at a LFS. I got an Axolotl in August, put it in a new 20 long with cycled filters, 2 sponge and a hob. They are sensitive and I wasn't taking chances. Had a fan blowing on the top and the temp has remained 65-68 F, all through the rest of the summer till now even. Within a week or 2 of setting it up, the tank developed a really weird white slime, to the point it was coating the sponges and the media of the hob. It was on the glass, on the hides, everywhere! I scoured the internet looking for a reason. Kept coming up shedding slime coat. It made no sense, this tiny little animal was capable of that much slime?? In a cycled tank? There was no NH3/4 or nitrate?? Then I struck an obscure post about the Aloe Vera in stress coat and Axolotl's causing this issue. I got prime immediately, within days the tank was clearing up. Today he is a big happy water sausage. Was it the Aloe Vera, or was it Prime locking up ammonia or NO2? I don't know, but Prime it is from now on!
@KaveManAquatics3 жыл бұрын
Not sure either. Dont have experience with Axoloti, but prime also has a slime coat producing agent in it, not sure if its aloe vera like in the stress coat. But im glad prime worked out well for you 😊

Back in the day, Id set tanks up, match the water temp I wanted, and after a couple of hours when I saw the heater was holding temperature, Id add fish the same day. My routine was watching for the first signs of ammonia, and Id manage through water changes (and some ammo rock) and Id get everyone safely through. No beneficial bacteria...Id just feed very sparingly....but it does become alot of work. This was my old-school way. Its nice to know there's so many products to assist if I chose to do a similar setup. Then life happened and I didn't have an aquarium for a couple of decades. Re-entering the hobby brought me to the idea of a planted tank. My old-school ideas were still predominate. I have used beneficial bacteria this time around, not sure it was needed. What Ive enjoyed is learning that I dont have to do much at all. My ammonia "readings" ended up resulting in wild, Co2 like growth.... After a little over a month in, I've let go of alot of my old-school approach to the hobby....this isn't easy to do....I am happy I attempted this and Im receptive to learning about things which are new to me. So I've got some hope. Lol. Thanks for your informative videos!

Hi Kaveman, Thank you for your efforts in helping the community. Greatly appreciated. In the case of a nitrate spike, you mentioned dont go into a water change. Just thinking out aloud. Say a 50% water change would reduce the ammonia, nitrates, and nitrites by half. Less ammonia to deal with chemically (smaller doses) and definitely reducing the stress. On the poor creature. Always appreciate your videos.

I decided on a heavily planted dirted tank. The idea was to immediately add a minimal stock of fish and then add more every week as you wish. Everything was going great for 6 weeks until I bought guppies. The guppies were sick. I tried to treat the guppies. The guppies didn't get better. I did a significant water change. Then everything went sideways. No water changes, so true. Now, I'm battling the cycle. I'll try to get some prime as soon as possible and hope that helps ease the pain of these fish due to the currently high nitrite. Thanks for this video.

Ammonia at 1, Nitrare and Nitrite 0, PH between 7.2 and 7.6. I watched a few of your videos and got Prime and Stability a few hours ago. I hope it works out. The tank has dwarf grass, moneywort, Asian ferns, and couple of moss balls. I think some of the leaves fell off and rotted. I got the tanks ( had to get two ) and I even went to the local pond guy and got some nicely cycle water to fill them, but the nitrate levels were really too high. I had Stability, but NOT. Prime. I was using a standard detox that got rid of ammonia and chlorine, but didn’t get rid of the nitrate issue. My fish were really stressed… flashing and surface gulping. I’m going to get some PRIME as soon as the pet store opens. Thanks for the great video- I appreciate you !

Not knowing this, I've been changing the water if there's any trace of ammonia, then adding prime and stability into the new water I put in, then if I tested ammonia again, I'd panic at a 0.25 ppm reading and be changing the water and adding prime and stability again.
