My question is why is the holes in a shape of a square when the popcorn cup is round??

Because all the holes are squares. Almost all of these machines are interchangeable, so they can keep changing the prizes without having to replace the whole machine....and if one part breaks down or something, they can quickly just replace one part instead of having to order new ones.
