You can see that it has, seemingly, made the tree trunk lift up in the air, in the time it takes the FRAGMENT of trunk to move the same distance to one side. Both pieces have been accelerated at the same rate, which means the energy in the impact is colossal, greater than High Explosive is capable of. The thing to do is to aim to make that magic energy thinner, or smaller, or tighter. You wouldn't have to change the intensity, just confine it to a smaller area, like throwing a knitting needle that weighed the same as a tree-trunk.
