There's a lot of work gone into that Output Shaft, certainly complicated...........all been worthwhile stripping down, maybe all old engines are worth doing if you have time and some skill...and patience.......Good videos....Matt

I think the three balls are the 'positive neutral finder'. You can only select neutral or first with the bike (and therefore output shaft) stationary.

+zzpza Yeah its called the 'positive neutral finder mechanism' like you said it stops you shifting from 1st to 2nd when stationary. It basically locks 5th gear in position unless the output shaft is rotating, this means that the selector drum cannot rotate any further than neutral. As the bike moves forward the centripital force fling the ball outwards and allows 5th to move.

Cool, I'd always wondered how it worked! :)

Pony Power It's also giving me a bit of drive to get back to the garage and start working on the CX500 engine again. Just need to get the last bits of crap off the head, put the new head gasket in, Bolt it all on and start the other side.

This is the video I was looking for Matt.........my problem with the Yamaha XJ600 could be the bearing in the case, hopefully, let you know...when I find out..
@dirtygarageguy8 жыл бұрын
+ROY Dean if the main roller bearing is knackered then you also need to replace the needle roller bearing on the other end of the shaft. If the main bearing has been wallowing around the load has been transfered to the opposite beaing which will need to be replaced and at around £15 its not worth not replacing it if that makes sense?
@motorcyclerefurbishment81628 жыл бұрын
+Pony Power ......I will take your advice, that thought never crossed my mind, Thanks for suggesting it, I found the suspect bearing for £10 on ebay, but I will wait until I take a look before buying anything....
@dirtygarageguy8 жыл бұрын
Do you have a link and number for the bearing? Also what year is it?
@motorcyclerefurbishment81628 жыл бұрын
+Pony Power .........the reference is EP83993...its a Toyo bearing....the bike is a 1997 XJ600......on the OEM Motor Part site references BALL BEARING B6305N and the other one is BEARING (20NG3315NE) which is the needle bearing......
