Question... do you have to take apart the top in order to take apart the bottom end? Or can I just flip it and take apart the starter clutch end?

Well done. Where did you get your gaskets and gasket sealer sealer. I’d like a good one to use. Also where did you get the new oil seals from?

It was a long time ago now but there was a lot of hunting for the correct kit.

How do you prevent the cylinder block from falling down before you install the big end caps? what is de block holding down? Great video, thanks.
@FixRideExplore
@FixRideExplore 3 жыл бұрын
I used an elasticated strap to hold the block up. Basically a bungy cord.

@@FixRideExplore it's the place to be right now I think we only have 3 active covid cases in my state due the the swift action of our government closing the borders earlier than the rest of the world did. that about the only praise you will ever hear out of me for politicians lol but they have to get something right once in a blue moon even if its by accident LOL

Total stab in the dark here but I’m desperate for a solid answer. I am rebuilding a 1985 zl900. Do I put any sealant at all on the oil pan? Shop manual is cryptic, saying put some sealant on roughly half of the area and leave the other half dry. Thanks in advance!

I put a very thin smearing of sealant on the gasket In areas that exit to the outside world but it's best for you to understand what the gasket is doing and make your own call. The most important thing to remember when applying sealant is that it can ooze out of the join when it's compressed. This can then clog and foul oilways and cause issues. This is why only a smearing is required and too much makes the oozing worst. For example an area of the engine oilway post oil filter would be a bad place to have excess sealant. Take a look at the oil pan and map out where it's important to have sealant and where's it's not. Also check the mating surfaces are good. Gasket sealant is for tiny imperfections not damage and big gaps.

Excellent vids. Planning to do the same to my '89 model at some point. Did you fit new pistons & rings?
@FixRideExplore

Hello Bkershrub. They're lovely bikes to work on. I didn't need to change the rings. I did a compression test before I stripped it down and once apart I grabbed my feeler guages, bore gauge and micrometer and gave it all a check. I was happy with what I saw so gently cleaned it up ready to reassemble. Rob

As always, well done! Out of curiousity, where do you find where the torque amount are at? What does it look like/format of it. Hope it makes sense :)
@FixRideExplore

I used the Haynes manual for the torque rates and orders.

Just out of curiosity where have you been able to find parts for the motor?
@FixRideExplore

Fortunately the engine needed no other parts but a full gasket so we didn't need to go hunting for spares. What new parts I have seen are very pricey.
