Ian, the Z500 is a great looking bike! With my 59th birthday approaching quickly, I would buy a small adventure bike. The ergonomics and commuter friendliness of the adventure bike is more practical for my style of riding. (Full disclosure, I've been riding my CRF300L Rally for the past 2+years, just want something with a little more power).

Been wanting the kawa klx 300 sm or something close in this size. The price is nearly the same as the z 500, which is bonkers. You get more for the $ with z 500. I haven't decided but im looking something small & lighter....yet NOT grom small. I have to be able to "pop" onto the interstate for a few exits in my city for example. I'm pretty sure, after watching this in-depth review that I will be happier in the long run with the z 500.

Yeah Kawa has so many options for easy growth: a versys 500 would sell like crazy. Especially if they would also make a lightweight offroad model. Also if they would just update their 650 engine for once because it is getting really far behind in the midsection class of bikes.

I bought an outgoing 2023 z400. I'm 70 years old, pretty much a "noobie" in the parlance of the motorcycle world, and the deciding factor for me is the weight of the bike, the lighter the better.

Just got a NX500 and have to admit that sometimes I'm having slight difficulties and look like a beginner, even though I've ridden all kinds of bikes for 40 years. Maybe it's the 19" front wheel or the 17 L of fuel high up. My '17 NC750S didn't feel that awkward, maybe I'm getting old. Of course, the weight down low and the automatic help. :)

Me to . I've ridden all kinda of bikes since 1972. From Elsinore to Moto Guzzi. Kawasaki only shows off their engineers since this is their smallest division. They will not lay down and take 2nd place. They give far more "freebies for bucks" than ANY other make. Buy the SE and double the freebie factor. Honda gives you a name. Big deal. Wow.

Had a Ninja 300 used it like a baby sports tourer, rode it all over the US. Loved that bike. I can only imagine this one is that much better. The Honda isn’t as fun the way the motor just doesn’t rev out. KTM and CFMoto haven’t risen to the reliability level for serious consideration for me. But excellent point on the Versys 300, had that bike too but would buy a 400 or 500 version in a heartbeat.

I am really interested to buy this z500 or ninja 500. Have had more than 25 motorcycles from motorscooters to a bmw 1200 to a KTM duke 390/690, triumph legend TT VFR800, TDM900 and now I am riding a Royal Enfield Meteor 350 with nearly 20HP. This last one I have to longest in my possession. It's for sale now, not because it is bad. It is a really fun slow bike. And I couldn't agreed more......using the term of Beginnersbikes or bike for women. It's bullshit. For example, I've had much more fun riding the KTM 390 than a BMW R850R for example. Riding on the highway only a true touring bike is good for that and even than......3 bikes I liked to do highway with it. VFR800, Ducati ST2 and a Varadero 1000cc. And all the other big Cilinderbikes were shit on the highway. And in the city and just outside the city you can have as much fun on a low CC bike than on a big bike. Probably more fun on a smaller engine bike than on a bigger. I think the new generation middle class bikes like this 451 engine, triumph speed 400, Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 and more are the best of 2 worlds. Traffic in Europe is getting more and more crowdy. More and more speed limits. So yes I'll will go for a test ride with this Kawasaki. The only thing I don't like about these water-cooled middle class bikes is the sound in higher revs. But hey, it is still much much better than the sound of a motorscooter, even with a aftermarket muffler. Been there done that! Great review by the way 👌🏻😉

I rode a CFMoto 450SS as well, and the ergo's on the 450SS are NOT for casual city riding. That’s pretty much my thoughts, I rode the Z400 and the 500 Hornet back to back. Like you say, the Honda rides like a bigger bike and the dash on the Hornet is really nice and would be difficult to improve on. I think younger riders might go for the Kawasaki, more mature riders for the Honda.

I gave some solid consideration to getting a CB500X, as I was returning to motorcyclng. The 500s are attractive. But the simple truth is that where I live, everything on the freeway is going 80MPH. And I didn't feel comfortable on the 500s running at those speeds, and having the power to be able to just "get out of the way". I had a Hawk GT back in the day, a bike not known for its power. Commuted daily in Southern California, toured it throughout the southwest. But that was 55MPH speed limit days, it was also pre-Covid. Covid unleashed a lot of drivers, and I simply don't want on a machine that's near tapped out in those conditions. So, I got a 700 instead of a 500.

I don't really see what Kawi is going for here. Is there a reason to take the Z500 over the CB500F? The Honda gives you dual disks up front, a longer wheelbase, and 120/160 tires to the Kawi's 110/150. And the Honda has Showa SFFBP upside down forks and the eternal 471 P-twin that will never die.

My old CB500X had the same issue with footpegs / exhaust. Interesting. It's definitely annoying in that it's pretty testable and fixable. To the first question, I have had such a good experience with the Honda 500, that it's hard not to give that the nod. That said, I think this is probably a more exciting engine. Ton of fun can be had on any of them.

I never in my wildest dreams thought I would be cross shopping small bikes, I’ve had a cbr900rr, dyna wide glide, gsxr’s, MT09, then went to an MT07 currently, my gf wanted to learn to ride so we got her a 2016 ninja 300, which she still rides, I used it to commute to work for a month or so, and realized how much I like ripping on a small displacement bike and using all of the throttle and slipping in and out effortlessly, I’m seriously thinking about trading the MT07 for this bike in particular. I rode a friends ninja 500 and fell in love , but I’m a diy guy and have a disdain for removing full fairings lol. I’m almost there still weighing it in my mind.

I'm a Harley rider and I do love them but I have really been craving a lighter sportier bike to just hop on and go. I'm experienced on cruisers but not on sports & nakeds etc I came across the Z500 which was appealing to me because of the pricepoint, light weight, style and approachable reasonable power. Do you think this is the right entry for a experienced cruiser rider to enter the naked segment? Will I outgrow it quickly? Does it feel stable enough for highway commutes between 70-80 mph or will it be in high end of rev range in 6th gear? Any other nakeds you would recommend under $8k new that would suit me better? I'm 6 foot 190lbs. Everyone keeps telling me to go for an MT-07 or Triumph Trident 660. There is alot more Kawasaki dealers near me which is another reason why I'm looking at the Z500 because of more dealer support near me.

6:15 What do those vibrations mean that appear at a certain speed or engine RPM? For example, on a Honda CB500X, those unpleasant vibrations can be felt when reaching a speed of around 100 km/h or at about 5000 RPM. But when you go past that speed, they disappear.

So I personally own a Cfmoto 450ss (my 23rd bike) and work at a cycle gear so I’ve seen and rode the ninja 500. Hands down the Cfmoto is better in my opinion. The engine has so much character and looks really good. Also the features beat the ninja by far. Example: turn by turn navigation on the dash, music operation from the button on the clip on, gps tracking on the app through movement notifications. The braking is also better with the brembo brake. Im not trying to put the ninja 500 down but it’s almost as uninteresting as the cbr500 when it comes to the engine. Now working in my shop the ninja 400 is still king. Almost all new rider are hunting for a ninja 400 for a good deal. I do tell them the Cfmoto is a bike you can “grow with” not “into”. What do I mean, it’s a good bike that you can start on and then as you grow as a rider and maybe take some classes and become a better rider, you’ll see how capable the 450 really is. However it does have a skill cap. Once you get really good and take it to the track and you’ll see the limitations. However for everyday use on the street you’ll have a blast. Thanks for reading my comment and ride safe people🤙🏼

I hate to push used machines, but if you can find unmolested low mileage bikes near you I feel like it really opens up options budget wise. You can go on any trail , and ride to the trails , but it’s not a sports bike and it’s heavyish 210 kg . If you don’t go off road get the Versys 650 , that is a fantastic bike , still has a tallish seat 845mm , but you can wind down the preload on the post 22 versions remotely ….for commuting , then make it stiffer for full speed twistie use . With any of the Big Japanese bike manufacturers it's hard to go wrong..... you will most likely get a long lived power plant that needs a minimum of upkeep. That's huge if you don't own tools & don't work on your own stuff. So ya got the Ninja 400/500 & then these Naked Bikes to compete in the new rider tastes department? IDKnow, I'm trying to make sense of all these bikes out there..... there's so many to choose from & I'm looking for a 1st bike since the early 90's. But I've got my lists of 8-10 Dual Sport bikes which I've researched them including mods & prices for the mods that I would want on each bike. All that said, I had to stop b/c I didn't know exactly what this bike was - I like it but I don't think I could take her down the gravel path very well? Some of you can but I'd crash// peace

I would love a Z650 RS with a CF 450 engine. That would be the perfect combo of looks, power, and sound. The price of registration in my country is double between A2 and full A 😔

I'd get the previous gen Husqvarna Svartpilen 401. Test rode one last year, the KTM single is delightful and the Swedish styling is the cherry on top. Not a huge fan of this year's redesign though. Still prefer it over the Duke, but it's a bit watered down.

Why don't you mention one of the biggest pros of this bike which is its beautiful esthetics, it looks really great - nimble and aggressive at the same time. I used to own an ER6n, now changed it to Z800 but I miss the swiftness of ER.

I have to agree. Kawasaki shoul put that engine in the versys as the the versys 300 has absolutely 0 torque and and no low to mid range power for an adv bike. Thats the very reason i never bought one. Also Kawasaki needs to put the versys 650 engine in the klr650 and sales would skyrocket

My money would go on a 390 Duke or if budget permits, the new Husqvarna Svartpilen 401. So much more bike for the money than the Z500. The Kawasaki design looks really dated to me and light years behind the two bikes I just mentioned. Non USD forks and that ugly headlight, the whole thing looks cheap.

I've been around motorcycle media for a couple decades. I wish I could cancel certain terminology out of the system: Dash/dashboard: these are found on old cars (hunk of metal that kills occupants in a wreck; hunk of plastic that crumples in modern vehicles) not motorcycles. This is called an "instrument display" on motorcycles. Even the airbag-equipped Goldwing doesn't have a dash/dashboard. Beginner bike: while there are low-cost, user friendly motorcycles, there's no beginner bikes. This category doesn't exist in manufacturers sales publications and catalogues, and never has. I appreciate the channel, I know you work hard at making quality content as it is your occupation.

Great review as usual. To answer your question, of the four bikes you mentioned I'd lean toward the z500. I prefer to stick with japanese reliability over the KTM and I dont think I'd ever buy a chinese bike of any kind. Between the Kawi and the Honda, I lean toward the Kawi because of price, brand loyalty and I like that the Kawi revs out a bit higher. Speaking of reving out, I was pleasantly suprised to see the redline at 11k. There was a lot of talk about how the added displacement of the new 451 engine was going to mean lower revs, which I thought was kind of a bummer. But sacrificing only 1k rpm from the redline for 50cc's doesnt seem like a terrible compromise. I think the big question now, is what does this new engine do to Kawasaki's 650 bikes? Do they bump those up to a 750? Also, why doesn't Kawasaki feel the need to offer a middle weight adv bike? Do they really expect people who get started on a VersysX to want to graduate to a KLR?

I traded my 19' yami R1 to my son for his 18' Kawi Z125! Sure you can do 105mph in first gear on the R1 but doing 50MPH on the z125 feels like 105mph..

To me, it's all about timing......... The crank timing on this produces a sound only rivalled by a wet fart. Like Kawasaki can't re time it.... 270 or even 360 done right.

They used to have a KLE 500, which was an adventurised version of the old ER5 commuter. Something like that based on this platform would fantastic, but please give it wire wheels and a huge fuel tank!

From the option you give, probably the Duke. I'll admit I have bias as I'm already an 890 Adv R owner, but something about the Duke platform feels special. Even the 390 feels less pedestrian than the Kawi or MT-03. It's also nicely equipped for tech.

I am looking forward to the new 2024 Husqvarna 401, full adjustable suspension and larger gas tank. And yes I would totally be interested in a Versys 500x. I am also waiting for the new Honda Hornet 750 to come to the US too.

I wish you would have touched on the rider connect that they offered on this bike as well, incase I missed it I apologize. I feel the versey's 500 is coming, they didn't even bother to give that bike another color option this year just the same one from last year....

100% agreed. I've done the big bike thing too, and I guess when you start you're bound to want the big guns. But yep, once you've scratched the itch, the 500cc are pure delight and fun and I'm looking for one now, because it's so orgasmic to open the throttle wide all the time and be at legalish speeds. I would not have a 500cc as an only bike, but as a second or third, it's the dog's bollocks. I have the RT1250 and Scrambler 900, looking for either the SR450 or RS457. Why not the CBR500R or the Ninja 500? Because their engines feel and sound to me less 'noble' and gratifying than the other two mentioned.

Given the options, I'd get the Ninja 500. It's a familiar platform and it's a workhorse. Not quite a bulletproof bike, but it's close enough.

American riders are addicted to horsepower. What they need is to be addicted to being better riders. I'd venture that 90% of us never use what a 100 hp motor delivers - safely.
@Ozsmallbore
@Ozsmallbore 3 ай бұрын
Most can't handle 50hp safely. The average American (and Australian) rider buy bikes that are way above their skill set and are actually slower because of it. I have always ridden 250cc max bikes off road, and always copped a ribbing (girls bike , no power etc) from the 450 brigade. But the 450's are way too much for most of them and they are the ones being left behind.

When comparing this bike with the CB500 Hornet the most important question to me is: Do I want a screamer that revs to 11,500 rpm or do I want a more relaxed, relatively long-stroke engine that cuts off at 8,500 rpm? Do I want to rev the snot out of my bike or do I want torque down low? And: Can the Kawa beat or match 3,5L/100 km/h?

Eh, don’t really need much low end torque when the ride is so enjoyable anyways, it’s only by comparison that the majority of the power is up high

Just wanted to pitch in that I am not sure that your statement about insurance between the Ninja 500 and z500 is correct. For me, it’s completely wrong, at least with Progressive. I can get full coverage on a Ninja 500 for about $250 per year while a z500 is almost $500 per year, which is more expensive than insuring a Ninja 650 for me. The reason? Who knows, but the logic that fairings equal more expensive insurance does not appear to be true, at least not with Progressive insurance.
